Boveda in Washington, DC is a low-key spot for authentic Spanish fare. Its name actually means "vault" and the owners have designed the entire space to have a "Latin speakeasy" atmosphere. Tucked into the Westin in the Georgetown area, it is fun and funky and even offers a private dining room if desired.
Menu options at Boveda are both familiar and unique at the same time. Starters include cheese platters and charcuterie options. Appetizers feature house made guacamole, nachos and ceviche as well as pupusas and yucca in green sauce. Trio platters are a great way to savor many different tastes, and there is a large array of beef and meat platters. Of course, no visit to Boveda is complete without one of the irresistible desserts as well as a classic cocktail.

Boveda Ratings and Reviews
When we arrived at Boveda they told us we had no reservations even though I showed them the opentable confirmation. The restaurant was empty and the waiter told us to just have a seat. We sat down he offered no apology and the restaurant didn't seemed like a good fit so we left. My husband and I have never walked out of a restaurant but Boveda just didn't feel like a good dining experience.
My girlfriend and I decided to visit DC once again and because of Boveda, our trip got a lot more fun. We loved how nice and friendly the manager and the waiter assigned to us were. Our reservation was at 9pm and our table was ready to go. We even stayed till closing hours because of how nice it felt to just sit there and have one of the best margarita drinks we have had. We enjoyed it so much that we returned the next evening. The manager allowed us to sit in the same booth and even offered us to taste a new sangria that he had made and it was just another delicious drink! We are definitely visiting Boveda on our next trip and planning on bringing more people with us!
Very uneven experience. Menu had variety. Food was brought out unevenly so the first in our party of 8 had their food a full 5 minutes before the last group in our party did. Waiter gave us the check without checking if anyone wanted coffee or dessert, which we did. Also said he couldn't validate parking even though website said they did. We weren't rushed (other than the check thing) and food was good.
the decor is quite neat. Although is a tapas restaurant, most of the food is not Spanish. It is a mix between Mexican food in tapas or entrees + Manchego cheese (probably the only Spanish item). The food was good. Service was slow as written by others. If you are in no rush, just want to socialize and drink with occasional movement of food, then is ok. I would recommend to order your drinks and first round of tapas so you are not left waiting. BTW, the place was empty when we were there...
The guacamole was delicious and the Ceviche was different in that it was served in large chunks on flat puffy tortilla shell. They were very good but overall I found the menu disappointing. I was expecting more then traditional Mexican fair with a description of "modern takes on pan-Latin small plates, entrees & drinks in rustic-chic digs." The queso fundito was disappointing in that it seemed like Velveta melted and the salsa was a jarred salsa. Some fresh pico would have been nice instead and add some flare to the menu. The interior was attractive enough but overall vibe was almost sad as it was so empty on a Saturday night at 8:00.
Our dinner at Boveda was fine until it was time to pay. We were a party of 10, and expected the normal 18% gratuity to be added to the bill. However, the manager brought over the bill and asked us whether we'd like the gratuity to be either 20% or 21%. We found this completely off-putting. Then, when we received the bill it was very confusing--it looked like the gratuity was added twice so we had to ask the manager for an explanation for that.
Finally, we were a party of 10 and spent over $400 and noticed that they had the nerve to charge us for 3 extra orders of chips to go with our guacamole and queso. We had only asked once for more chips, which they didn't bring, so we asked again. We did not get 3 orders, only 1 order.
Food was good but these things really put us off. We will not return.
It was dead on a Monday albeit. There didn't seem to be any waiters/waitresses so we sat at the bar. While the bar was also dead, didn't really get the attention from the bartender that we desired. He was dealing with a weird customer, but still. Waited around a bit for a couple of drinks.
I really enjoy the food and the selections available. The bar is always a great place to sit for some good conversation with the other patrons or bartender. Tj recommended a few meals and drinks that were excellent. He should eat a little more of the food there since he looks so skinny and tall but his customer services was superb. I will definitely eat and drink there again.
Made a reservation for 915p per the menu/description on Open Table. After being seated we were told that we could only order appetizers and small plates-no dinners were available at 915p on a Friday. Despite its description the place came across as a cocktail lounge that happened to serve food. The place also seemed to be understaffed.
The restaurant has a nice ambiance. The low lights make it nice for a couple. The only thing that left me disappointed was that our appetizer was not brought out earlier and our waiter did not check in with us for an extended period of time when we put in our order.
Big disappointment. drinks were okay but nothing special. margarita was bland. waiter was slow and not very attentive. guacamole was not very good. food took forever and was Luke warm when we got it. 100 dollar dinner for two and we could have been better with district taco.
Strange menu, but the food was very good. The chips and guacamole cost $15, which irked me. The large guacamole was about enough for 8 chips. And the server told us they didn't have salsa, which is so strange, especially considering he brought some out after a round of pleading.
Love the food here, but the service could be a bit quicker, since it's bottomless and endless. The restaurant was empty, but I still was having to look around for our server for additional items and drinks.
The dishes are worth the wait tho! Love the food, and will be back!
I went to brunch with 4 people when there were only 3 other tables in the restaurant. The service was not very attentive. Also, when we were contemplating the all you can eat option along with the all you drink the server failed to mention that the entrees al la carte were all tapas. Definitely worth doing the all you can eat since the tapas may leave you unsatisfied. However, they run an all or nothing deal. Everyone has to order all you can eat. Everyone has to order all you can drink. Food was tasty though.
The food was disappointing. Steak tacos came cold with hardly any toppings on them. My husband and a friend ordered medium steaks - both came rare. Overall the quality of food was not very good, especially considering the prices.
The ceviche tuna appetizers was quite good. Recommend pisco sour.
We choose Boveda because it was close to our hotel and while it was not very crowded, our meal was excellent. I had the pork carnitas and they were delicious and I would order them again. Also had the tomatoe salad which was awesome. The restaurant is beautiful with stone and wood decor. Looking forward to another visit.
My wife and I went here on a Saturday night the day after valentines day. We arrived around 7:45 to find out they were out of there white sangria, so I ordered the red after my first glass my wife and I ordered a half pitcher. The waiter then told us that was the last if the red sangria as well (not sure why a restaurant rumba out if one of there staple drink on a Saturday at 8:00pm).
We then ordered 2 entres off the menu thinking we were going to share them but when they were brought out they were smaller than expected and WAY OVERPRICED, although the food was delicious you would have to spend a fortune to get a complete meal.
My girlfriend and I went to Boveda for Valentine's Day. There wasn't too much of a crowd and got our table right away. Our server was very nice, but given the occasion, I'm not sure he is usually waiting tables. There was some confusion and my girlfriend and I both got the same entree, despite ordering different items. We didn't mention anything since we were starving and not too picky. The food was excellent, especially the tuna ceviche and the arroz con leche. The sangria was very good and the best drink I've had in a while was a complimentary creamy, white concoction. Overall, I'd recommend Boveda for a weekly dinner night out or for drinks and some lite food. I was hoping for something a little more for a special occasion.
Location was great however the food was laughable (even the waitress giggled in embarrassment when she set out order on the table). Our bill came to over $80 and I we had to go to another restaurant for an actual meal. Portions were extremely small and not even good. Mixed drinks were also very weak. Overall, a huge waste of money and I'm surprised it's attached to the Westin.
Food was pretty good, but absolutely unremarkable. Presentations were nice, but the implementation didn't quite match the ambition. Sauce on one of the dishes was oversalted, fingerling potatoes on another - on the cusp of being underdone, tomatoes in tomato salad were hard and without flavor. One dessert was a very strange arroz con leche. Tables too small - bar size. Service pretty good, but a little intrusively over-eager. Very noisy: they seem to be trying to be a latin night club with good food aiming at the younger World Bank and embassy crowd. Had a pleasant enough meal but somewhat disappointed. For restaurant week, we expect to eat really, really well. If this is Boveda's best shot, it needs to try harder.
Went for brunch, we were relatively early and there were only 2 other diners there but they had already run out of some entrees. The bartender wasn't able to make some of the drinks on the menu either. Overall disappointing but not horrible. We tried nearly everything available on the menu and there were only 2 or 3 dishes that were quite good, otherwise the food was fair.
I've spent the last year in Miami and back and forth from various Latin American countries. I was so happy with this place. First the knew how to make a Pisco Sour which I could not even find in Miami. Second they had a new twist on Chicharon that I had never had that my wife and I loved and man I love all this pork and bacon like. It really is a great blend of foods from various countries in Latin America. As an added perk the salsa is old school, my wife and I dislike more modern salsa. They also have a great mix of other latin music. We will come back to this place fairly often.
The restaurant space is comfortable and trendy. The bar predominates but the chef is first rate. The smoked salmon ceviche is outstanding but could have benefitted by offering bread or pitas with it. The two specialty "tacos"we tried were also perfect tastes and unique..we especially liked the pork belly one. Disappointed that there was no red sangria that night. Very odd. They brought us the white variety instead but not really a good substitute for us. There was a large wedding party nearby so there were some over taxed wait staff who still manged to handle our meal service well.
