I have dined out often in DC and Boss Shepard's rank as one of the best. The service was old school and impeccable. The food outstanding. Excellent all the way around.
Maggie was terrific as always. Restaurant week compelled me to try more than their fried chicken. They have one of the best Cesar salads I've ever had. The fried chicken is the best in DC. Side of corn on the cob is unbelievable. Beautiful cheesecake, excellent Cabernet made for a perfect evening.
Our first visit to Boss Shepherds, and I'm sure we'll be back. We ordered from the Restaurant Week dinner menu. Both had the fried chicken for our main course, which was excellent, as were the Caesar and grilled flank steak salads. Desserts also were delicious - a white chocolate coconut cream pie was especially great. The portions of all three courses were AMAZINGLY generous, especially given it was a prix-fixe menu!! Service was very attentive and friendly, too. Glad we finally made it there!
Continues to be the best fried chicken in town. Corn on the cob was unlike any I've ever heard. Can't wait to go back.
Class place without the pretentiousness. Excel net food and cocktails.
We really enjoyed our food and service at Boss Shepherds. They made an excellent vegan dish for my daughter and my fried chicken was excellent!
I had the cheeseburger for lunch. The hamburger had gristle that I had to spit out. The cheese was hardly melted and had congealed. The bun seemed stale. The fries were cold...1 was even ice cold in the middle.
Perfection as usual. Gr eat service, great fried chicken. What else can you ask for?
Disappointing. We were referred here by the Grand Hyatt Concierge. Especially for the fried chicken dinner which we ordered. Waiter was stretched too thin and had difficulty understanding us. I wanted a bacardi and diet coke. Full bar but they had no rum. My husband wanted a vodka martini.....bar had no vodka. We ended up ordering wine which was fine but not what we wanted. The fried chicken was enjoyable. We were on a vacation in Washington DC. Only had 4 nights for dinner. We feel as if we wasted one night.....
Order the fried chicken!!! You won't regret it. We loved the dipping sauces.
Excellent fried oysters and their in-house ground sliders. Pork chop was huge (a bit too pink in the center). Very loud bar which is next to dining room and open.
The Washington metropolitan area has a lot of dining establishments-but this is on my top list!!
The fried chicken really is as good as claimed. And the service was prompt and friendly.
This was my second dining experience in well over a year and the bar service is absolutely horrible. Neither the bar or restaurant was full and we had received and almost finished our apps before our cocktails arrived - which we ordered first.
We ordered from the limited theater dining menu, but beware of the fried chicken. My dinner guest has health issues and 2 of the pieces of chicken received were not cooked through. Management did apologize, comp a second round of cocktails and comp the entire bar bill, but serving undercooked poultry could cause a serious health risk and concern for many patrons in DC.
The food that was cooked properly was amazing and the portions were very generous. And management was very responsive to our concern. Although the person who cleared our dinner plates before dessert heard the manager say he had taken care of the bar bill after he had placed the second round and asked "so what did the kitchen do wrong with your food?" It appeared our food issue was more of a normal occurrence than we suspected.
This has become my go-to pre-theatre spot. Always good.
A solid place with very good food. Perfect for pre-theatre dining or for something in close proximity to the White House. Their little neck clam chowder is superb--different, not too thick and delicious. The staff is very attentive and the atmosphere is very cozy.
We had an excellent experience. We went to celebrate my husbands birthday. We were on our way to see Rent so we ordered from the Theatre menu. The food was excellent and a fantastic value. The portions were quite generous. Our waiter, Sean, couldn't have been any more pleasant.
I've been going here for a while, since it opened. I like the atmosphere, the proximity to my work, the Chardonnay and usually the cheeseburger, but 2 days ago when I bit into my burger, there were large nodules of hardened grizzle, meat. I think when the chef was preparing the hamburger meat, the mixer must have malfunctioned. I told the manager and he is comping my next glass of wine. When I told the waiter, I got no reaction. No biggie.
Boss Shepherd is the Boss of Good Food.
I love taking people to Boss Shepherd's because not only do they make me look good each time, but its my justification for visiting them again.
We both had sandwiches off of the Sandwich Board and they were delicious. My lunch companion had the pulled pork and I enjoyed the delicious chicken sandwich.
I also enjoy the Wheat Ale with a hint of Vanilla (Willy Vanilly) that they serve. It is the only place in DC that I know serves it.
It does get a little noisy for dinner, but at lunch its the perfect place for business or just catching up.
Dinner at 6 for a show at 7:30. Initial service was great but then resturant got busy and we were at the mercy of food runners and bus boys.
We had a delicious meal before a show at the National Theater.
Great place to grab a bite to eat especially if you are seeing a show at the Warner Theater. The food was exceptional but the service was slow. When they asked if we were seeing a show they brought our appetizers and entrees out at the same time. We were given the check before we even got a chance to ask for the dessert menu. Overall it was good
Both Curtis and Shawn made sure that our first visit to Boss Shepherd's would not be our last.
The food was delicious. The server was also very knowledgeable and observant of our needs.
Went here because I saw a vegetarian option on the menu online but was disappointed that it wasn't on the menu at the restaurant. The salad was surprisingly good though and ordered some maple Brussels sprouts that were ok. My boyfriend loved his shirt ribs but thought the mac and cheese was just ok. They do a good job of making you feel like you're not in a basement, though you are. We went dressed very causal after walking around DC and I felt somewhat under dressed but, We didn't get any flak for it from the suit-wearing host. The bar looked like it was busy on the back end of happy hour but, without a show going on that evening, the rest of the restaurant was pretty dead, especially for a Friday night.
We love Boss Shepherd; the location is near our hotel, the food is always good, and the service excellent. It is a little noisy which makes conversation somewhat difficult, but we keep coming back for the food. Very nice place and we will return.
Boss Shepherd's has become one if my reliable, "go to" spots to host visiting professionals, celebrate personal successes, or just seek a respite after a long day. The staff is welcoming and attentive, and the menu offers a variety of options for light and heavy eaters.
We found this restaurant on OpenTable as we were looking for a place to have lunch while we were walking around DC. Our food was delicious and the staff were very friendly.
While our servers were phenomenal, the manager was quite rude. When I called to book a happy hour table, they asked me to use Open Table, so I did. When we arrived, the manager ranted at us for using up a dinner table "just" for happy hour. If there were bar tables available, or if the dining area was packed, I would have understood. But there were no tables in the bar, the dining area literally had one table occupied, and were there at 5:15pm (way before a dinner rush). Plus, with a large group, we were going to order a lot of food and drinks anyway.
Otherwise, the atmosphere is awesome, and they have a great drink menu. The food is mostly fried stuff, but it's well done and reasonable for the nice atmosphere.
Hello Boss Shepard's Management & Staff Team,
I wanted to personally thank all of you for making my daughter and family feel so warm, welcomed and appreciated during her college graduation celebration dinner last Saturday night!
Your manager Curtis and the entire wait staff was truly wonderful and attentive and made a point to individually congratulate her for efforts and thank her for her service (enlisted NAVY for ten years). We have been there together before and I remembered thinking it truly felt like a unique experience then, but last night superseded our expectations.
She was deeply touched and so am I -we cannot thank you enough for this being such a memorable experience and look forward too many more!
We sincerely wish you and your families the best of everything,
The Diaz Family
The food was good and the service admirable, but the restaurant didn't strike me as particularly memorable. I wouldn't tell my friends not to go there, but I also wouldn't tell them to go there, if that makes any sense.
The staff was very friendly and the service was excellent. We really enjoyed the atmosphere of this restaurant and the food was amazing!
We had a wonderful dinner at Boss Shepherds before we went to a show at the Warner Theater. It was good that we had a 6 o'clock reservation for our 8 o'clock show because when it got busy the service got a little slower. All in all, it was a wonderful meal (be sure to skip the starter salad for the fried green tomatoes!), the service was great from the host to the person clearing the table. We will be there again in the future!
I brought my sister to Boss Shepards based on the reviews I had read online, she was in town to see a show with me at the Warner Theatre and was excited to treat her to some good food downtown. We were seated right away and the staff were all pleasant and attentive. I appreciated that they asked if we were attending the show and were mindful of our curtain time. I'm really glad that I very much enjoyed the whiskey flight I ordered first because unfortunately that is the only positive thing I can share about my food/drink experience. I will say the wine selection is excellent and I enjoyed a $16 glass of tasty Pinot Noir. I ordered the fried green tomatoes with high expectations but was disappointed by the flavorless appetizer. The salmon was overcooked and dry and the accompanying brussel sprouts & gnocchi were completely devoid of flavor as well. I also tried the butternut squash soup which had been prepared vegan style and was pretty bland. Overall very disappointed and will definitely not be going to this restaurant again for anything other than the whiskey.
Very nice atmosphere and a really nice waiter. I think he may have been a bit overwhelmed though as some requests had to be repeated before they were delivered. Otherwise, the food (hamburgers) was tasty.
Great place to meet friends before heading to the theater. Be mindful of your curtain call and let your servers know that's what you are trying to accomplish. Good food and great atmosphere. First time for a couple in our party of 6 and they said they would be back to this find.
Just not great. Had to remind the waiter about the wine we ordered. Very low sodium in any dish making food bland.
really enjoyed our dinner, good service, good food
Not cheap, but generous portions make it better. Grilled calamari very well-cooked, not chewy at all, very tender. Oysters on the small side but cleaned well and nice and briney. Ribs were tasty even without the sauces, and huge head of broccoli that came with them was interesting. Steak was the only disappointing dish as it was very tough and chewy at medium rare. Would go back if we're in the area.
Food was very lack luster. However, the bar, service and decor were great! I would definitely go again for drinks.
