It was an awesome experience. I had friends from Argentina and Russia. They enjoyed the food very much.
Love the water spinach and garlic dish. Am vegan and there are plenty of vegan options in the menu.
Very nice place, not too crowded. Rendang was a little oily but very tender and delicious. Also recommend the salted fish fried rice.
The food, Indonesian, was not what we have much access to as we live in the Midwest. It was delicious! And the portions were generous! The ambiance was not fancy, but it was comfortable and very welcoming. The staff was very kind.
We have eaten at Borobudur on numerous occasions. It is perfect for a pre-Theater meal, and it’s always good. Service is usually pretty quick, although it can bog down slightly if the restaurant is busy. The decor is also interesting, with a lot of eye-catching wood carvings and other Indonesian art work.
Been here a lot when we visit SF. his time seemed understaffed. Also no real choice of wines
The food is terrific and we will be back
Both my parents were born and raised in Indonesia. Consequently, Indonesian cuisine was the food of my youth. Its flavors and aromas are highly evocative of countless fond memories of family gatherings and celebrations throughout my life. Borobudur hits that nail on the head every single time. Delicious food, friendly service. Love this place.
Fab food and great dinner for 2 value
The rijstafel was the best way to taste 10 different items/dishes. Suprising was the price difference between internet sites, and even the outside menu. But the requested, and highest price, was on the table menu.
we stopped for lunch, kind of last minute pick. It was great ! food was awesome, very authentic. the service was a bit slow, but we didn't mind, for the food made up it.
Food came in slowly
Was ok average
Borobudur is a great spot in the Tendernob. I'm a vegetarian and there are lots of vegetarian options to choose from. We loved the roti prata, a noodle dish with peanut sauce, and a tofu and spinach dish. Lots of great different tastes!
It's menu on OpenTable was very outdated. We did Rijsttafel. OpenTable menu had the price as $27.50 for one; $26.50 per person when there're 2+ people. The restaurant menu hasnit as $32 formone and $31 for 2+. A big difference.
The food was delicious, and amble the service was good. Rijsttafle gives you a chance to sample all dishes.
Besides the price the other item worth noticing was Rijsttafle comes with the choice of dessert or tea or coffee, not and tea or coffee. It's kind of rare, my own opinion that you get either dessert or tea or coffee instead of dessert and tea or coffee. We were charged for an extra hot tea.
Surprisingly good Indonesian food, with great service. We thoroughly enjoyed lumpia, chicken satay skewers with great peanut sauce, and bakhmi goreng
The food was tasty but luke warm. And that was after we waited a long time for it to come out. This restaurant would really benefit from some extra help in the service. It was full and happening. Only two people on the floor and my guess was the same in the kitchen.
Excellent food but one hour wait, having reserved
We really enjoyed the meal. We got the Rijsttafel. Our favorite dish was the Ayam Panggang Bumbu Rujak. Fun experience. We went for lunch and it was very quiet and chill.
This is one of the only restaurants we know of in this neighborhood with a nice atmosphere, good food and reasonable prices. It is perfect for an early dinner before a show at the nearby SF Playhouse. Try the beef Penang - you won't be sorry! The staff is very knowledgeable and happy to advise, if you are new to Indonesian cuisine.
They couldn't find my reservation through OpenTable but fortunately they still seated us.
Food was NOT good. Chicken was NOT fresh at all...very tough and tasted freezer-burned. Sauces tasted like they were straight out of a bottle.
We went for dinner before a theatre performance as it had good reviews. The food was nice and the staff very friendly BUT the dishes arrived in no particular order and each person at the table got their food one at a time with up to 15 mins in between. At the end, we had to leave for the theatre without having even had the last 2 dishes so shared 2 people's dinner for 4. Not recommended.
Found this little gem in San Francisco. The place is rather small but very busy. The food was amazingly delicious. We will definitely come back next time we are in San Francisco.
Had an excellent dinner here with friends. The menu is expansive and delicious, especially considering the price, which was really reasonable. The staff were awesome and made some good recommendations. Limited wine and beer menu.
One of our favorite places to eat. Consistent and tasty.
Great staff -- friendly and helpful. No rushing. We enjoyed our time and the food was a lovely adventure.
We wereere vacationing in San Francisco and wanted to try something new. We went in really late. Waiter was extremely helpful and friendly and the food was fantastic!
Always good food!
Borobudur is one of the few restaurants that offers an Indonesian style rice table. The average customer appears to be Indonesian or there about which speaks highly for the quality and ethnicity of the food. We had one rice table (tafel) and several other dishes between the five of us. I n particular, the beef stew was outstanding. We fed 5 for around $90 - not bad.
This was my third time at the restaurant and, unfortunately the third best. The starters were excellent but the Sate, The beef and the shrimp were only so-so. I am open to trying again and hope for better.
The same as dining in Bali.
Having just returned from Indonesia I found the food similar to my memory of dining in Samir. The flavors and spices are authentic and the presentation is awesome.
Enjoyed the ambiance and food! The wait staff was very attentive and made suggestion based on specific preferences. I nice variety of food. Will definitely stop here again.
Food was just average and service was rather poor. Not as expected.
Had seen this place pop-up in various Google searches stop there had to be something about it. The food was excellent and we were full to the brim, although we only shared a starter (amazing layered bread with curry dipping, yum!). Would recommend, although the décor and ambiance are a bit funky, perhaps hasn't changed much since 1991 :) So if you're not looking for the hippest new place in town and don't mind a crooked wooden horse-shrine-monumentary-thingy on the wall, then this is a place for consideration.
Good fast lunch
A very pleasant surprise. Started with the Satay, perfectly cooked, tender and very tasty! Then had the shrimp in coconut milk - delicious. The place has around 14 tables, but only about 4 of them were occupied for a Thursday lunch.
I think this is a total find. Has a diner-like ambiance - it's really all about the food.
Does not disappoint! I lived in Indonesia for a year and have been craving its food ever since I got back two months ago, and this place is both authentic and delicious!
Lovely Indonesian cuisine in a pleasant restaurant. I haven't been to this place in over 10 years. They redecorated nicely. Delicious food & good service. I look forward to going again.
We ordered rijstaffel, which each of us got 2 appetizers: yummy spring rolls and a cup of soto ayam (chicken, rice noodle) + 6 kinds of small entree items + rice + a choice of coffee, tea, ice cream, coconut with black sticky rice). The 6 items were beef rendang, chicken satay, curried tempeh & tofu, gado2, chicken with bumbu rujak, curried shrimps and veggies. All were served on small oval caserrole dishes.
A few commments:
- this menu is good introduction to sample Indonesian dishes
- the food taste and flavor is authentic. It is rich and a bit on the salty side because I've had low salt diet in the last few years. You can try asking them to make the food less salty
- you have to come hungry, or perhaps share it with another person, or doggy bag the left over for your next yummy meals
- I forgot to order krupuk, which will enhance the tasting experience
- make sure you leave some room for the ice cream or the lack sticky rice with coconut
- if you don't like spicy food, ask them for substitute items for chicken bumbu rujak and curried shrimps.
- servers were friendly and efficient
Definitely I would come back. This restaurant was one of the highlight of my visit to San Francisco.
Great place for when you just want something different!
