Border Grill - Downtown LA Ratings and Reviews
Had the Border brunch for unlimited small plates. Some of the dishes took way too long to come out from the kitchen leaving you with long breaks between small plates. Some dishes were spectacular while others were not (chicken and waffle — waffle was burnt).
We were seated right away on the outside patio under a heat lamp. It was great. It wasn't that crowded so the overall noise wasn't that bad. The people at the table right next to us were VERY loud. The food was good - it took longer than I expected to come. The waitress said about 2 different times that the food was coming right out, but it took a while to get to us. When it did - it was good. Convenient location for what we needed.
I had a rehearsal dinner here back in July for 50 people. We chose from the menu and the food was fabulous. I wanted to bring a recently widowed friend for his 73 birthday and came from Huntington Beach for what I thought was going to be a great experience. Firstly, the music on the patio was way too loud and all we could be offered was a move to a less obnoxiously loud spot. As people came into the patio I could see them jockeying around to get away from the music. No one would turn it down. As for the food, you’ve now gone to some “all you can eat” brunch menu for $30 and a limited single offering menu. The food we had come to eat was no longer an option, and your “all you can eat “ menu was filled with sugary, syrupy laden foods, soggy French toast, mushy tamales, and other disappointing, less than stellar items that were not made to order but rather cut from sheet pans in the kitchen.
In July, I thought I’d found a go-to LA restaurant; In December I found a place I’d never want to go back to. My friend was very disappointed and I was embarrassed.
I had a wonderful birthday lunch with my friend at the Border Grill. I ordered the Mexican Chopped Salad with Shrimp. We had Mojito's to start the festivities. After the meal, our waiter brought a torch candle to our table and a nice dessert plate which was unexpected and greatly appreciated.
Great place for a girl’s night. Ambiance was great - music was a little questionable, meaning it went from elevator music to top 10. It was just a little odd. Service was great, and food was good (particularly the churro bites) but it was quite pricey for street tacos. I suppose that’s LA for ya. Again, lovely service, good food, and a great place to catch up with friends.
Sunday Brunch is an amazing value with all you can eat small plates for just $30 per person. The option of adding bottomless mimosas or mimosas and mixed drinks is great. Every dish we tried was spectacular and the service was amazing! We especially LOVED the deviled eggs and the benedict on brioche with perfectly cooked (sous-vide) eggs. We will be back.
Terrible food experience. My husband and his brother had dinner at the Border Grill and they had one of the worst meals of their life. The guacamole was tasteless, uninspired, and less then mediocre. The fish tacos were distinctly dry and tasteless. The salsas did nothing to improve the food. Only the service made it almost palpable. The restaurant was empty and how sad that this restaurant has gone down over time. Is there anyone there who cares about the founders of this restaurant.
They decided to leave.
Wonderful 20th Wedding Anniversary Dinner at our longtime favorite! Chelsea, our server, couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming! We loved the bonus guacamole and amazing special bonus desserts complete with sparklers for our special occasion. The food was delicious and prepared with love and respect for the fresh ingredients! Thank you all so much for such a special night!
Border Grill is quickly becoming my go to place when I come to downtown LA. Having season tickets to a couple of downtown theaters, I find myself looking for a place close by. The menu is great with such variety. The cocktails are also amazing. This past visit we enjoyed the special taco trio and the raspberry chipotle margarita. Wouldn't have been dinner without the churro tots. The staff are friendly and accommodating. I'll be back!
Dining under the stars was great and the weather could not have been more agreeable. Great and charismatic and attentive server. Meal was served immediately after being cooked because it reached our table in good temperature. I do not appreciate cold food or servers forgetting to pick up and take to table because they are too busy.
Would definitely eat here again very soon.
Although there are tons of new spots in downtown, let's not forget the oldies but goodies that have been there and have weathered the test of time.
Great place and food was delicious.
Long ago, Border Grill was a pioneer, and one of the very first restaurants in LA that served a new style of Mexican cuisine: authentic, fresh, tasty, with new variations on originals. With the proliferation of other "similar" restaurants over these many years, Border Grill has lost some of its luster. The food is still good, but not as interesting or unique as it once was. However, I would still go back if in the neighborhood.
This is our Go-To spot for friends get-together before going to the Ahmanson Theater for a play. Food flavors are always unique and fabuous! Best tapas! Wait staff is always friendly and helpful. We sat outside this time as there was an after-work party inside. The weather was perfect for outdoor seating. Even though there were two parties going on our waitress, Chelsea, was always there for us.
I always enjoy my dining experience at Border Grill - DTLA. We were actually a party of four (4) and everyone from the Host at the front who greeted us, to our server; who, by the way, is one of my favorites (Pablo A), and everyone who served us was wonderful. We got a special treat when Susan Feniger, stopped by our table and asked how things were going. Three of us ordered the chicken enchiladas which were amazing. Very flavorful with a little kick. NICE!! A big thumbs up from everyone. Thanks again for making our dining experience an enjoyable one!
Border Grill is a fun place to eat. The walls are painted with large, characters that look like a first grade class assignment. Great location. The music was way too loud so conversation was a little difficult. I am also a vegan and although the choices were few, my waitress made some great suggestions. Very accommodating. I would go again.
