What Insiders Are Saying
All-around solid Mexican food with a slight corporate vibe.
The food was amazing. There were a lot of delicious vegan options.
Our server, Corina, was just wonderful and, Trevor, the manager came by our table as well and he was lovely too! And the food and drinks were AMAZING!
It was good food for the price. The initial wait time to be seated was a bit long considering we had a reservation. Once we were seated, all was great. The waitress was very nice and the food was of good quality.
Border Grill has spectacular food and really wonderful staff. The tacos and the chicken enchiladas were truly exceptional. Our group tried many different menu items, and we liked the food a lot. The margarita were also well made. The guacamole was amazing. I would highly recommend a visit if you’re in Downtown.
Food was amazing! The churro tots and guacamole were the best I have ever had. Highly recommend the brunch all you can eat small plate menu!
Great food with good service but VERY NOISY. Don’t even try to have a conversation in a normal tone of voice.
I love the food at this place..but it's so loud!! Go on a weeknight!
The food is aleays excellent!
We had the most amazing server and her name is Regina . She should train every server in every restaurant in the United States . Our food was delish and the sangria is a must try. The minute we walked in, the host who sat is was congenial and accommodating . If it’s been awhile since you have been in or have never been, the food and service was stellar.
Fabulous guacamole... creative dishes... try the ceviche with plantains...yum!
Great food a little too noisy. Wonderful service.
Best. Hips, salsa, and guacamole ever. Creative dishes. Not your normal Mexican restaurant. A little pricy but worth the extra. I ate there everyday during a recent conference at the Westin.
Probably the best chips, salsa, and guacamole I have ever had. This isn’t your normal Mexican restaurant or dishes. The Yucatán pork entree was delicious. However, too much food for one person so I would recommend splitting if you have a partner. I will definitely return.
The food was good but the service was bad. It seems as if they were short staffed, not sure. We waited a long time in between, did not even get a chance to get another drink! Overall ok experience.
My friends and I went to check out their brunch for the first time this past Sunday February 18th and I don't think we'll be back for that. The service was very very slow and they weren't that busy. It took at least 35mins to get our drinks. One of our drinks were sitting at the well area of the bar and our server never brought it to us so I had to go and get it. I love their food and I will come in during dinner hours but not for brunch.
A bit old fashioned, border grill is like a blast from the 1990’s.... that’s not good or bad, it’s just kinda a fact. Complete with Basquiat-ish art on the walls — I half expect to see Andy Warhol sitting at the next table. But... he’s not. The food was good but bland. My chicken poblano enchilada was quite bland and dry. On the up side, the queso was good, and my friend loved the tamales, so there ya go. I have lots of love and respect for birder grill but I just want these two to shape up and act like they give a hoot before the DT location goes the way of the Santa Monica one. Do the owners go out to eat? Checkout the current wave of modern Mexican - border grill is an original but they need to keep pushing or it’s gonna get old.... or has that ship sailed?
You gotta go for brunch. Unlimited tapas plates for $30. 95% of the dishes are excellent. Plus, bottomless mimosas for $15 or bottomless bloody marys for $20. I would do it every weekend if I could.
I took my Valentine to Border Grill on Valentine's Day. They had a pre fixe menu Day or you could order from the regular menu. We shared the Ceviche Duo, the Mexican Chopped Salad, the Chicken Poblano Enchiladas and the Yucatan Pork. All were very good and more than enough for two people (we took some home). They brought my Valentine a complimentary bouquet of flowers (they did this for all the ladies in the restaurant). I highly recommend this restaurant.
Easy reservation, friendly and professional service, and great food.
Always a favorite place before or after the theater. Great food and adult beverages, don't pass the specials because they truly are special. Pleasant and courteous staff, great ambiance and reasonably priced.
Consistently great food - We ordered many of the appetizers and starters. Desserts are also excellent.
Service could be improved somewhat.
The grill is a go to spot for the four of us, however, as much as we love it, of late they are taking more and more special events which takes away from the regular dinners and in some cases has cancelled all reservations for large groups. The serving portions have also been reduced, as the chopped salad is half the original size and costs more. It also was missing some of the original ingredients.
The food is delicious! I had the ceviche two days in a row… Need I say more!
Food was very good and they had a great gluten free selection. My only issue was the server put the checks together and said he “couldn’t” separate them after. It was basically so he could make sure to get the 20% gratuity. He would’ve made more if he would’ve allowed separate pay and gratuity.
Great evening at Border Grill. Brought two work associates in town from NY. From great margaritas to amazing ceviche followed by taco combos, we all enjoyed our meals in a comfortable and fun setting, conducive to being able to hear each other!
Food was good but nothing outstanding or memorable. I would go out of my way to eat there again. The waiter was really nice but service was so slow. Should take 90 mins for lunch.
My party of three hadn’t seen each other in many years, so I appreciated your host responding to my request to turn down the music. We were actually able to have a conversation, an increasing rarity in LA restaurants.
Great customer service. But unfortunately this is a restaurant, where the most important thing is the food and drinks. Thumbs down to the chef and bar tender. Food was served cold, we noticed people in other tables complaining about their food also. Drinks were served flat. (The flattest mojito ever!) Chef and bartender need to care a little more about their position. Thumbs up to the night manager and waiter for taking care of the situation.
We've been coming here for decades. Started back when it was called Ciudad. Still the same extreme quality and flavor with a clever menu and great bar. Still the best Tres Leches Cake anywhere.
Tacos were very small, but tasty. Service was good. Chips were very good.
Four of us opted for the "all you can eat" small plates menu for $30 a head. We had French Toast, Carnitas Benedict, trout on toast, chicken and waffles, quesadilla, and tamales. It was LOTS of food and we could have ordered as much more as we wanted, so the value is good. For dessert we had mini-brownies, mini churros, and banana bread pudding. None of the food was spectacular - everything was tasty. I used to go to the Border Grill in Santa Monica and some of the menu items were the best Mexican food ever. Maybe if you order individual items off the regular menu, there are still some spectacular choices.
Service was slow, 20-minutes to get a drink order in, 30-minutes to get the chips at the table. Lunch service is fast and professional, but not this dinner crew. Food was great!
The menu changes are terrific! Giving diners a choice of sides with their entrees, rather than the standard rice and beans, is a welcome change.
The servers are very nice and are willing to accommodate special requests, if possible.
The manager seems to be quite visible, making sure to check on the customers, and keeps things running smoothly, overall.
We dined there for my husband’s birthday at the Dine KA event. Portions were small given the price (particularly the dessert). Only one basket of chips was included. A bit nitpicking but these things can add up to make an experience not so great.
A friend recommended this restaurant and it did not disappoint! We loved how friendly and helpful ALL the staff were, the restaurant had a great energy, and the food was amazing. Best guacamole I’ve ever had! I love when a server makes confident recommendations from the menu, rather than saying “everything’s good;” all the recommended items were authentic and delicious. I will definitely go again when I’m in town!
We used to be huge fans of border grill. First time back in over one year and even with a booking, I had to ask/remind them to seat us. It took over one hour to be served and receive corn chips (used to be complimentary & immediate?) food then came all at once - appetizer and main - great food though.
Long wait for food and drinks, and yes, I know it was a Friday night. The food was pretty good but I think overpriced for a basic Mexican menu. Would not accommodate our group to split the bill up. We were not asking for separate checks but said they would do up to 4 cards but when the bill came they back pedaled on that and only allowed 2 cards to be used. Plus they automatically put on a 20% gratuity when the service was less than awesome so I do not tip that much for that level of service
We were looking for something not too expensive but interesting within walking distance of Disney Hall. We were late due to a bad Uber ride and informed our waitress we had exactly 55 minutes and asked if our food and check could be served in that time and assured yes. We were there for an hour and fifteen and had to ask a host for our check, but otherwise our server was very nice. In between my partner had some decent bar food for the price particularly his taco. I ordered 3 course from dine LA menu. Grilled calamari was fresh and good. Chicken mole was way sub par. Chicken was dry. Not much mole and it was flavorless anyway. Nice tres Leche to finish. It was very loud and looked run down. I will look for better options next time.
I was in town on business and had co-workers place me in charge of dining during our trip since I'd lived in LA for many years. I hadn't been to Border Grill since 2008 and was so very pleased that the food was still delicious, the atmosphere perfectly "LA" and my co-workers were impressed! They remarked that the food was SO flavorful and spicy without being too hot and spicy to enjoy. We did have 2 minor issues - one person didn't receive their soup and the same person ordered a quinoa bowl that arrived without the quinoa in it. The restaurant was extremely busy during the time we were there so overall, the experience was fabulous. Definitely recommend!
Work lunch with 11 people. Some of us did DineLA. The restaurant did a very nice job accommodating our large group. Our server was friendly and helpful. Options on the DineLA menu were great. I had the cauliflower appetizer, poblano chile entrée and churro tots dessert. It was a fun lunch!
Some of the best guacamole I have ever had served with fresh warm tortilla chips. The tacos were really delicious. And the Brunch deal here is worth every penny. Service is also attentive and very friendly.
