The Duncan Hines Excellence in Hospitality Award was presented to Boone Tavern in 2003. The prestigious award is named for restaurant critic Duncan Hines. Lunch offerings let you choose from a variety of salads, unique sandwiches and hot entrées. Evening meals offer an array of delightful appetizers, salads, entrées and desserts. Historical favorites like “Chicken Flakes in a Bird’s Nest” and “spoonbread” are fixtures in the restaurant. Sunday Brunch is another tradition. Dining room attire is tastefully casual and reservations are required for groups and evening meals.

We were staying at the Inn for New Year’s Eve and reserved dinner at the Tavern. They had a special New Year’s Eve meal -so we chose that. The pre-meal clam chowder and the Champagne Strawberry cake were the highlights, but we enjoyed our entire meal. Service was very attentive and the meal was served quickly. Added to a special New Year’s Eve.
We made reservations for Christmas Eve lunch but were surprised upon arriving when we were told there was no menu for the day, only a buffet. This was not noted anywhere on the website. There was a decent variety but much of the food was cold. The service and ambiance were very good. The overall experience was positive and we will visit again but not for a buffet.
Had steak for dinner and it was tough and undercooked. With desert ordered decaf coffee but almosr positivevit was regular coffee because could not go to sleep forca long time that evening.- you need to clearly mark the decaf pot with an organge stripe!
Had breakfast and the coffee was too weak.
We hadn't been to Boone Tavern in years and one of the biggest changes is that wine, beer and cocktails are on the menu. The hotel lobby and dining room have been elegantly refurbished and are warm and welcoming. What hasn't changed is the great food. Our friends are vegetarians and there were plenty of options for them. I had fried green tomato wedges and roast chicken. The chicken was moist and beautifully presented. And the terrific spoon bread is still served. I read mixed reviews on service but our server was efficient, prompt and got everything right. We were too full for dessert but the choices looked wonderful. We'll be back!
The hotel and restaurant have been given an upgrade. They now have a liquor license. Most impressive is the food. Many staples on the menu but new additions. All in our group thought their choices were excellent. The pricing is also very modest for the quality of food.
Had dinner there as well as breakfast during an overnight stay. Quality of the food for both breakfast and dinner was very good. Service was very good although don't expect "fast". That is not a problem as you come here for the atmosphere and to spend time in the dinning room. I would come back without any hesitation. Our dinner meal could have been a bit warmer in temperature is our only complaint. Could have been partly due to the fact we were an early dinner group just after they opened up. Felt comfortable while we were here as well. In my opinion 4 out of 5 stars. Breakfast on its own would have been 5 out of 5.
We had lunch and Sunday brunch at Boone Tavern, and enjoyed both - nice setting, good food, excellent & friendly service. Charming hotel with a good solid restaurant, right across from Berea College and walking distance to cute shops, galleries, and a coffee shop. Beautifully decorated for the holidays - would definitely recommend.
Eating at this restaurant was an unexpected wonderful experience. We started with fried green tomatoes and the fried deviled eggs. I cannot even say how unique and fabulous they were. The salmon I had was seared to perfection with a delicious crust. The price was extremely reasonable and we will definitely got back. I have already told 20 people they need to go.
As a student, unfortunately, I could never afford to eat at the Tavern - which was a shame since it was our almost-free labor that made part of its excellence sustainable. So I have never patronized it's excellence to any great extent. But its excellence makes it an ideal experience for a special occasion. So I was glad that I was financially able to make this experience available to part of my family that had never eaten there. It was worth it - to me.
This dinner was in celebration of my husband's 80th birthday. I appreciated being seated at a round table so we could visit easily with our family from out of state. Our waiter was upbeat and efficient. We were able to get a birthday cake put back in the kitchen to be brought out at the appropriate time. It was a great experience all around.
Enjoyed the info in the lobby and the ease of getting a reservation on line . We all enjoyed our food. Although the server was friendly he did a terrible job of bringing what was asked for without a reminder and was not very attentive at all for that nice of a restaurant.
There were eight of us attending dinner at 6:30 on November 4th. We were seated promptly. The waiter was very attentive. The food was good, but not excellent. We have had better food
at Boone Tavern. Four of us ordered the strip steak which was a special that night.
It was tough and overcooked. It almost tasted as if it had been cooked and warmed up.
So, we were a little bit disappointed. However, this will not deter us from trying Boone Tavern
I took my granddaughter there for her 10th Birthday. She had to go to the restroom half way through the meal. I told the waiter, but when we got back our table was being remade and our food was gone. Said they could give us more food but would require a significant wait. The waiter said he had not been able to tell the clean up crew. We had dessert as she was still hungry. Everyone said they were sorry but no gesture to reduce bill. Was disappointed as was my granddaughter.
The restaurant is lovely inside with crystal chandeliers and hardwood floors. The table settings are dignified and the wait staff prompt and efficient.
The food was good with decent variety and met our expectations.
The Boone Tavern hotel and dining experience make this a great get-away destination.
Food was better and more complex than we expected. Our only complaint was that the tables are little wide and it seemed we felt far apart. The music was a little loud initially but was turned down. Overall, a nice relaxed dinner. We will go back despite the 45 minute drive.
It seems that there has been some change in the food quality, which is a little sad, but I suppose the way of the world these days. Specifically, the desert selections were particularly unsatisfying - the cake was still partly frozen in the center, the cookies were out of a grocery store package, and the brownies were clearly Sysco. It was so much more of a treat when they employed a pâtissier (pastry chef)... Still, all of the entree items that I had were quite good and the selection was appropriate for brunch (fish, vegetables, fruit, bacon, omelettes, etc.) I particularly enjoyed the citrus salad dressing and the fried chicken, which thankfully still appear to be made in-house.
Something very rare these days that we really were thankful for was the service - which was absolutely tops. The waiter for our table was superb! He was very courteous and friendly, as was the girl bringing the spoonbread around, and they made up for the desert issues.
The ambiance, as always, was very nice - a traditional, semi-formal setting with well dressed wait staff, pleasant music, and tasteful decor. If you like historical settings the Boone Tavern Inn is a must-visit.
We dine at the Boone Tavern whenever we are in the area. It never disappoints. This is the first time we experienced the Sunday Brunch. It was excellent. Great dishes prepared well. Well worth the drive, and certainly worth the slight detour off of the interstate!
I took my husband to Boone Tavern to celebrate his birthday. Food was delicious, but we asked for more spoon bread and they said they didn't have anymore. I thought this was weird as spoon bread is what they are known for so you would think they would have some until their last guest left. Also, they never acknowledged my husband's birthday. In celebrating future
birthdays, we will not choose Boone Tavern.
We were there for an annual conference and had read reviews on TripAdvisor and naturally wanted to try ourselves. The food and service was very good. It was VERY cold in the restaurant to the point that it was uncomfortable. The three of us got a chicken dish that was accompanied by potatoes along with a tasty salad and of course, the Inn's famous spoon cornbread. Everything was very delicious. The restaurant was tastefully decorated. We returned for breakfast and found it much more comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, plain old country cooking with fried eggs, crispy bacon, homemade biscuits with fresh jam. Coffee and tea was great waking up to in the morning. We definitely plan to return and try different items on the menu. The management team and servers and all others at the hotel are excellent and friendly. You simply could not ask for better southern hospitality. Loved everything about this hotel!
12:00 confirmed reservation, seated at 12:45. Explanation " no tables were available", was a little odd, with confirmed reservation. Elaboration " some people have finished and just want to stay and talk, I cannot ask them to leave", also a little strange. The reservation algorithm needs some attention. Food not really outstanding, adequate, but ambiance is excellent. Service seems to disappear at times.
