Bookers BBQ + Crab Shack Ratings and Reviews
Excellent barbecue. Large portions. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Food arrived in good time and was delicious. We enjoyed the crab cakes which were crispy on the outside, and creamy inside. The brisket was stellar and the smoked chicken was moist and delicious. Would definitely recommend.
We made a reservation a month in advance (Jan 3) for 6 people on February 10. The only table left when we arrived at 7 pm was table for 4 at the front door that they had put a chair on each end. We did make inquiries to move to a larger table but were told that was not possible, you should not have to sit at the front door in overflow tables with a reservation made a month in advance. So we accepted that and moved on with our dinner. Our table was so small that you could not share the appetizer platter among the 6 of us easily. We ordered the appetizer platter and then told our waitress that once we were done, we would then order our main meals. The service went downhill and we waited at least 45 minutes for the meals to arrive. Either the restaurant does not employ enough staff or our waitress does not know how to wait on tables efficiently. Our overall experience was that there are other bbq joints in the city that we can go to next time.
Was not too thrilled when asked if we could move to a booth and told they were booked for parties of 3+, which is understandable. However during the time my friend and I were there that wasn't the case.
A table for 2, doing the all you can eat crab is cramped and not a lot of room or space on table.
Restaurant was very clean, servers and hostess were very friendly. Good selection on the menu for BBQ and Southern Comfort foods. The quality of the food was good, have had better BBQ for cheaper. The crab legs were quite small.
Alcohol prices were quite over priced for the quality of the drink. For example it was $9 for a glass of Sangria which was orange & pineapple juice mixed with white wine.
Would go back- maybe, not sure I would recommend to anyone as there are equally as good BBQ joints for much cheaper.
Everything was awesome. If I had to be a critic all I could say is a spicier sauce would be nice, however I like exceptionally hot food. Brisket and wings were amazing, the service was superb. The restaurant was spice and span, the beer cold, the people were warm and friendly. I'll be back. Food is top notch.
Bookers was amazing and able to accommodate my seating request. Their food and cocktails were excellent and the service was speedy. I would definitely go back! It would be nice if they used a higher quality crab fork. We found that the one they currently have is not as effective. Overall great spot!
There were four of us out first time being at Bookers. This is not a restaurant to go to if you want to talk to each other, music way too loud. Our waitress came to our table right away offered no help with the menu, asked about the all you can eat crab she said yeah we have it for $56.00 I mentioned to her that on the internet it sait it was $46.00 a plate all she saisd is yeah that should be changed. Then it was do you know what you want we felt we had to rush and eat and get out as soon as possible. Our bill was $200.00 and we will never go to your extablishment again. We don't like to be rushed and felt that we had to eat and get out.
We splurged and got the meat platter with Crab and it didn't disappoint. Could have few 4 or 5 people but there was only 2 of us. Excellent service! Excellent BBQ. Super juicy and tender. I loved the beans and coleslaw too. Was served on a garbage can lid, super cool!
I am a native Calgarian and have been going to Bookers for some 20 years now, the food used to be great. My wife and I were so disappointed with the quality and the very small amounts of food for what we are paying but more importantly what happened to the quality of the food. It reminded me of fast food dining, ribs weren't cooked, I think I had about for table spoons of pulled pork in my dish. The food was so bad the we ended up going to our favorite pasta restaurant after we left.
Bookers has a lo of work to do before I ever go back or recommend it to anyone.
Since moving to Calgary a year ago, this is my 3rd time here and up until this recent visit it's been good. This last visit was very disappointing in every aspect. The service was terrible, seemed like none of the staff wanted to be there. I had the smokehouse salad and the greens were not fresh and overall not very appetizing. I didn't bother complaining because I didn't think anyone would care.
Didn't really have very high expectations since I've only ever eaten here during Stampede, when everything is the same everywhere. Pleasantly surprised. The food variety was good. The jambalaya was excellent. Service was friendly and efficient. Prices were very reasonable. I will be back.
We went for our anniversary and was seated next to each other facing the bar. When booking the table I was specific about having a regular table for 2 because it was our anniversary, so we were extremely disappointed. We ended up leaving to eat elsewhere because of this.
The food was good, the service was fair. The live band had a great selection of music, however the music was so loud I could not talk to the person across my table and we left as it was no longer enjoyable. I would not go there again while a band is playing if a good meal and conversation with a friend is what you want.
We were very disappointed in our experience. Both my husband & I had wanted to try Bookers for a while now, as it's been a long standing Calgary restaurant. Unfortunately we will not ever go back.
Although the service was great it was the food that was completely lacking. For appetizers we had the Brisket Beef Ends, which had been recommended by our server, & they were very tender and tasty. After that it all went down hill. We also had the crab cakes, but they had the texture of paste & had no discernible taste. My husband had the BBQ plate with chicken & pulled pork along with gumbo & chili for sides. They only thing he truly enjoyed was the chili because it had some flavour to it. The rest of the items were completely lacking of any flavour.
I had the St. Louis Ribs & they were neither tasty nor tender. I've had way better ribs at the chain restaurant, Tony Roma's. I had to fight to get the knife to cut them. The side of corn bread had zero taste, while the coleslaw was good, but basic.
We get rare date nights & we're both frustrated & disappointed that this restaurant did not live up to the hype, took our precious time, and cost a lot. Definitely one place that I would not recommend.
