Started at bar as it was happy hour pricingordered clams casino which were dissapointing. At table for snapper soup- a bookbinders classic and always yummy , good bread. Main course was cold seafood appetizer. Half lobster yummy. Shrimp stole the show. Crab Limps sweet. Oysters just so so All in all a deluxe meal in a lovely spot and a bit of old philly nostalgia minus the oyster crackers and horseradish
Absolutely perfect experience. The food was nothing short of perfect and our service was extremely fast and attentive, best dinning experience in RVA or anywhere for that matter.
Fantastic service and wonderful food. They had a personalized menu for our anniversary celebration, which I thought was a very nice touch.
Great restaurant to go to I stop every time I’m in town I’ve always had a great experience
Gave us a private room for a business meal (which was a great surprise). Food was incredible. And the staff was fabulous. A favorite go to in Richmond especially for business dinners.
The crab cake is excellent and well done. There is no filler that clouds the flavor. It would be interesting to learn where the meat originates. It is a pleasant place to sit quietly.
My past dinners at Bookbinders have been favorable and what is to be expected from a fine diner. This time, however, the service and main course fell below par and certainly not what one would expect when spending $100+ per head. First, the server must have been assigned too many tables as the drink order, initial order and follow up service was quite slow. I wouldn't expect to have to ask for a 2nd drink but did. perhaps this was a result of being short staffed (?). The meal was good but unspectacular. The topping on the special must have just come from the freezer/frig as it was still cold and not melted... the steak was also relatively cold (like it set out too long prior to being served). All-in-all a disappointing experience given the price. We were also reminded that the menu was reduced due to the coming 4th of July Holiday (which probably should have been noted prior to the reservation).
My wife had been wanting to try Bookbinders for years, so I finally booked it for a date to celebrate the anniversary of our engagement. They greeted us with a menu that celebrated our occasion! Had delicious seafood with the stuffed lobster special and the Kona coffee encrusted filet. Everything we had from the appetizer, calamari, soup, their world famous snapper soup, salad, the tobacco row special, and entrees were all fantastic. Totally recommend it for a special night out.
Best prime rib I’ve ever had. Great service by Patrice
We have been here before and both times it was wonderful. The food was fantastic, the waiter was helpful with the menu, gave recommendations, and friendly. I never felt rushed to order, eat, or leave. No one hovered, but I never felt like we were neglected. It was a perfect balance of taking care of the customer while allowing us to enjoy our time. The building is beautiful with the combination of industrial and exposed brick. Don't hesitate to try this. It's a must-do in Richmond.
We were in town for college orientation and the parents all wanted to go out for a nice meal. The group decided on steak, and and wanting to have a more authentic Richmond experience we chose here as opposed to Morton’s. I would say based on our experience this is definitely a level below Morton’s but at some of the same prices. While I think every enjoyed their meal, no one was blown away by it and the only thing everyone raved about was the warm bread. I think we would have rather been raving about our steaks and seafood but that wasn’t the case tonight. Sides were just ok too, and cocktails mediocre. Great ambiance and good service, I just feel like the kitchen needs to step it up a notch. Again it wasn’t awful but I feel like I’ve made some better steaks at home for much less. It was a little disappointing.
Out of town visitors
I absolutely look Bookbinders. Everything was SOO GOOD. I have been here many times and have not had a bad experience.
Everything was amazing from the time I walked in the door until the time I left. Dinner was great, the atmosphere was great, the service was amazing.
It had been a while since eating here and now I'm wondering why it HAD been so long! Great service and food on a quiet Monday night. Crab cake was amazing as was the lobster mac and cheese and the filet was perfect temp. The chocolate pate had the freshest whipped cream and berries. Yum.
Wonderful as always...Bookbinder's is our "go to" restaurant for special occasions. In this instance, it was anniversary # 49. We can be sure that the food is what we like and the service is accommodating if we have requests. For us, it is one of those "worth the drive" places. Thank you for the manner in which you serve your patrons and for the delicious dinner.
Having read the reviews regarding the noise level, we went early hoping to avoid that annoyance. Alas, a very loud table came in right beside us. I suppose the restaurant can’t do anything about inconsiderate guests.... I had a very good salad with seafood on top. We enjoyed that part of town and recommend Bookbinder’s.
The atmosphere, the service and the food were excellent and a great way to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary with friends. My wife and I have dined at Old Original Bookbinder’s on a number of occasions in the past and have always had a great experience. We will certainly be going back to Old Original Bookbinder’s in the future.
One of the best crab cakes that I've eaten outside of my own home (and I lived in Maryland for years). The service could not have been better, anywhere.
Great hosts , excellent table for party of 6. A special thank you for the cordial and professional service of all the staff and the special occasion details.
Another amazing experience! Thank you!
Wonderful way to celebrate
Went for our 49th wedding anniversary, They produced a special menu with our names and date on it for us. The food and wine are fantastic. I ordered steak rare and that is how it came, wife got lobster. We shared and had way too much food. Will go back again on another special occasion.
Perfect night for eating out on patio; celebrating a granddaughter event. Just perfect!
Great food and atmosphere. The waitress was very friendly. If you are looking for a great value then this type of restaurant is not for you. The crab cake I had was the best I have ever had! I felt the price was in line with the food and service you would expect to get from a nice restaurant. I highly recommend it.
Good food and great atmosphere
The occasion was a very special birthday celebration. We had excellent service and the food was delicious.
Celebrated my husband and sister-in-law’s birthday. Everything was excellent. Initially, I booked for a party of 10. I had to increase the reservation to 14 and was able to do so with no issues. Upon arrival our section was ready. The restaurant is very intimate. I ordered the Petite Filet which was so tender I could have cut it with a fork. It was seasoned to perfection. Others ordered the fried shrimp, lobster Mac n cheese, and stuffed salmon. We all sampled each other’s food because it was so good. We brought a cake with us and our server had the cake sliced and served us. This place is simply amazing. My first experience at Bookbinders was far above my expectations and I’m looking forward to returning.
Went for my one year anniversary and it was amazing. The food & service was great. I also liked how the owner walked around and made everybody feel welcome!
Had a business dinner at Bookbinders. First, great ambiance. Great service. Not over the top but comfortable and friendly. The wine list was well done. The food was great. We had both seafood and steak dishes and were very satisfied. Prices were good considering the caliber of the entire restaurant.
You cannot go wrong with eating here.
This was our first time here. Several friends have told me it was there favorite . I can see why, both the food and service were excellent.
The food was delicious and I appreciated that our waitress seated us in a corner booth where it was a little more quiet (at first). The problem was that the restaurant began to fill up and it became very noisy very quickly. What started out as a quiet, intimate dinner turned into a waiting game to finish dessert and leave. In the booth next to us, a waiter seated three women who were not eating dinner but drinking cocktails and loudly chatting. A little later, a party of five was seated at a round table close to us, throwing back whiskey sours and talking loudly about business. It was a little much to handle at the dinner hour when I was trying to enjoy steak and crab cakes. I don't blame the restaurant for loud parties, but I wish there was an area where they would seat larger drinking parties and a separate area where they would seat quiet dinner parties of two. Would make the restaurant much more appealing.
Excellent restaurant!! Service was spot on and food was fantastic! Sound attenuation needs a little work as room was only half ful but fairly loud (truthfully it was one group speaking over each other!). We really enjoyed our time there.
The steaks were good but the flavor was nothing to write home about- not worth the $48 price tag.
We always heard good things about Bookbinders, but now we can say from personal experience that the food and the ambience truly are exceptional.
My NY Strip was pure perfection - Most places have difficulty doing "Medium-Well" steak, but the Chef "nailed it!"
My wife said the Crab Cakes were the best she's ever had - She was impressed that there was not even a hint of filler, and they were succulent, fresh and moist. Our sides included a huge baked potato and pan-seared broccoli, and they were also cooked to perfection.
The meal and the atmosphere (including the passing train, which delighted my "train-loving" wife) made our 31st Anniversary one to remember.
We went here for our anniversary and it was absolutely perfect!
It was my wife’s birthday.
Dinner was great and loved the ambiance.
Was traveling through Richmond and glad we were able to enjoy.
Superb dining experience. Filet cooked and seasoned to perfection.Vegetarian risotto excellent. Potatoes and sides we're tasty. Our waiter was attentive as were the other staff members. Bookbinders atmosphere with the dark wood and exposed brick evoke an older relaxed time.
First time and it was delightful. Food was great and tasty. Free parking was available. I would recommend this restaurant and hope to return again very soon.
