Worth the 45 minute drive to celebrate my husband's birthday. The food was excellent, waitstaff knowledgeable and respectful, and the atmosphere pleasant.
Birthday dinner was perfect!
I'm coming back, literally, tomorrow! I love this place!
Everything was excellent from the food to the setting to the service. We would go again.
For a restaurant that claims to be a special occasion restaurant, they sure do not know how to help customers celebrate.
Last year we went for our anniversary and included it in the reservation information. Nothing happened, no mention of it, no special menu, no congratulations, nothing. When I mentioned it to the host on the way out, she got the owner and he apologized profusely, asked us to give them another shot and that they usually get it right.
Tonight, we went to celebrate my husbands birthday. Again, I included it in the reservation, I even called when we were running a few minutes late and reminded them it was for a birthday. Just like before - NOTHING. The owner spoke to each table, to ask how they are doing etc (nice touch). But, I heard him ask the next table if they were celebrating anything. When he spoke to us, it was just ablöst why he wasn’t wearing a suit, no questions about if we were celebrating. We ordered our after dinner drinks and got the check. No mention of a birthday.
When I mentioned it to the owner again, he got defensive and began explaining why it’s hard to run a restaurant where everyone comes for a special occasion only. They can’t afford to give out cake and singing would be disruptive. Fair enough (although Ruth’s Chris is able to manage a piece of cake to help you celebrate...). A second celebration was sullied by this restaurant who supposedly gets mostly celebrations. And did he make any attempt to ‘make it right’? No. Other restaurants have comped whole meals for things like this. I did NOt expect that, but he could have apologized to my husband for messing up. He could have bought our after dinner drinks or given us a coupon for a future visit, or ANYTHING. Instead he wanted me to talk to his managers and started talking about how they could improve this going forward. WTF? Not my problem. You ruined our evening and when given the chance, did NOTHING to make up for it.
We will NOT be back - EVER!
Awesome Experience and Atmosphere
Outstanding service, high quality food, the entire experience was great.
My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary. While we had eaten at Bookbinders in the past, it had been some time. The food was even more delicious then I remembered. The menu included a Happy Anniversary greeting at the top, which I thought was a special touch. It was a wonderful place to celebrate our anniversary occasion. The ambience and decor added to our good time. Our meal was exceptional and very well prepared. This is a great chores for a special occasion. The service was top notch also. Can’t wait to visit this location in the future.
The food here is pricey but excellent. Some of the best calamari ever. We had a delay on our appetizers (got delivered to the wrong table) but they finally arrived and we were not charged for them. Worth the drive from New Kent and it's great that they offer free parking right across the street. We need to go back in the summertime when we can see the trains rumbling by.
We had a fun New Year's Eve celebrating good food and good wine with family.
Our New Year's Eve dinner was sensational - truly can't think how it could have been better! From the greeting/seating (on time!) to the attentive service, great ambience and scrumptious food, our expectations were exceeded in all regards. Thinking this will be our new NYE tradition!
Great New Year’s Eve dinner as always. 4th year we have done it and we have enjoyed every year!!!!!
Enjoyed the New Year’s Eve Prix Fix menu. Everything was good with the exception of the She Crab soup..it was tasty but served lukewarm. My New York Strip was perfectly prepared and delicious. The other courses were very well presented and tasty...crab cakes were perfectly cooked and more than expected. The one negative on the service was I got the feeling I was eating on the restaurant’s schedule not mine or our party of 6.
This restaurant has become a Richmond Icon. It is always consistent. The food is delicious, the ambiance wonderful, the staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Aw went with friends on New Years Eve. It was very busy but, our food was perfect and we didn’t have a wait. Quite delightful! The only restaurant in Richmond that even comes close is The Tobacco Company. When the weather is nice it’s very fun to sit outside in Bookbinders lovely courtyard.
Great food. Amazing service. Kind of pricy, but is the perfect choice for a nice date or a special occasion.
have never been disappointed with the food or the service. Bookbinders is one of those "high-end" restaurants that is great for those special dinners with your loved one or a group of friends. Cozy atmosphere and a Hidden jewel on E. Cary Street in Shocko Bottom.
Very nice atmosphere the waitress was very attentative and they had all the drinks on the table like I asked in my reservations. The lighting was perfect and they even made recommendations . Also the parking was amazing no hassle at all!
Going to Bookbinder’s for the first time My expectation was high. The atmosphere was wonderful. The food , not so much. Not what I would expect for the $ that you pay for. We had calamari as an appetizer, it was just average. The stuffed salmon with crab cake tasted horrible. The crab cake seasoning was just off. The salmon under the crab cake was undercooked. I do not recommend going there unless your going for the ambience.
I made the reservation for my spouses birthday and it was a wonderful experience. The food was excellent and it was the perfect place for our date.
Cant beat this place for date night. Ask for one of the booths and you’re all set. Guilty pleasure here is ordering the fried shrimp entree as an appetizer.
Me and my wife experienced Bookbinder’s for her birthday and all she can say was “amazing”. Everything about this place is top notch. Food was perfect! My wife even said she wanted to make this her yearly birthday dinner place!
Amazing food, not too crowded and great decor. Service was awesome. Can't afford to go often but this is a great special ocassion place.
The service from the waitress was poor. She tried to take our wine glasses away, assuming we didn’t want any wine. Her delivery of the menu specials was clumsy. We felt that we were being hurried and rushed to finish our meal.
I bring customers here often and just spent $800 on gift cards for my staff for Christmas gifts. Tonight was the most disappointing experience I’ve had a Bookbinder’s. I regret it was with my family.
We had Christmas dinner at Bookbinder’s; the food was superb - perfect crab cake for me and wonderful salmon for my wife. Our waiter paced the dinner well, checked back several times, and made the meal special, even though the restaurant was at capacity. We will make dinner at Bookbinder’s a new holiday tradition!
Will be there again soon
Great service and the waitress very professional and friendly.
So glad we found this for Christmas dinner. Food was excellent
Tim, our server was outstanding. The food was good, quantities were generous.
The food and the service were excellent.
Very nice place to celebrate Christmas, holidays and special occasions. Even with the limited menu that day, the food and service were wonderful.
Passing through Richmond on Christmas Day we knew we’d be very late or very early. They were very accommodating seating us early and near a window so we could see our car full of gifts.
The food was delicious and the staff were cheerful and festive.
A most enjoyable experience. The atmosphere is welcoming, comfortably classic and quiet enough to have undistured conversations. The service was commendable. And the food, sublime!
Great Christmas day dinner and atmosphere. The food was excellent as usual.
LOVED our waiter. Snappy Santa Suit and great service.
Our family went for our Christmas Eve dinner and were treated horribly. The waiter was not attentive and only visited our table to get orders. He gave us our bill with out offering dessert and never cleared out our table the entire time we sat there. The food was alright. The hostesses were rude and condescending. They gave our table away after waiting an additional 20 minutes after our reservation time even though we arrived early. The manager was nice and accommodating after we expressed being unhappy to two separate employees. Would not recommend for any special occasion and especially not on a “busy night.”
Everything was awesome
Christmas Eve with you is a special evening and excellent dining experience.
Early family Christmas celebration. Everything was great, food service. Very busy so just a little loud but that added to the festivities.
The service was amazing! We took our two children for their first fine dining experience and the service for them was spectacular! They have kids menus, though I didn’t see it on the website and the menu was fairly priced. My kids loved the attention and aspects of the environment! I cannot say enough about the service and attention they paid to us. The wait staff was not overwhelmed by to many tables to provide us with first class service. I recommend requesting the Presidents Room as it was as unique as the experience itself.
The food was top shelf. We started with the seared tuna..it was flavorful and tender; even our son who dislikes seafood, tasted and loved the flavor. For dinner we both had filets and they were cooked just as we asked and they were amazingly juicy and flavorful!
They did not disappoint!
