Bolivar Restaurant and Lounge Ratings and Reviews
Overall the experience was a bit disappointing. The food was good, but not great. However, the service was HORRIBLE! Especially from our waitress, she took our order and we never saw her again until the check. The wait staff was understaffed, only 2 that evening, on a busy night. Call me picky, but great service is a big deal for me.
We knew it from prior reviews: service was likely to be poor, but food was likely to be worth the wait. Sometimes, when a restaurant is hot, the kitchen or wait staff can be overwhelmed, and it's worth giving them time to get their act together. But Bolivar doesn't get it. There have been too many negative reviews about sluggish service. They need to analyse and repair. Is their kitchen understaffed? Is their wait staff poorly trained or disciplined? It took 30 minutes to be "discovered" at our table after the hostess seated us, and that was only because I flagged down the earnest and harried maitre d' as he rushed past. He, in turn, grabbed the first waiter who passed by on his way to the kitchen. (Was this waiter assigned to the front of the house? We were in the back. )He took our drinks order, brought our beers, and didn't return until he happened to notice us sitting there forlorn. He took our food order: seviche and a platter of tapas. Now I'm no seviche cook, but I know it's a brief marinade. No cooking; scoop it up. As we waited, we watched our nearest neighbors get served their appetizers (seviche!) and then, their entrees. (Different waiter.) Finally, I flagged down the maitre d' again who rushed to the kitchen. As the maitre d' disappeared, I saw our water streaking past our table. He noticed us, empty tabled, and said , "Oh, oh. I'll check in the kitchen!" I told him not to bother. We had help. Another waiter brought out our seviche and, before we finished the appetizer, out came the hot tapas. The food was very good: well prepared and flavorful, and, we thought, authentic. The singer was very good, and her music kept our spirits elevated despite the long waits. The maitre d' offered us an after dinner drink with an apologetic smile but we declined. It was late. We would give Bolivar another chance when it's not the holiday season and at a less popular hour.
We loved our meal at Bolivar! Every bite was delicious! I'm not usually impressed with sausage, generally, but the slices of Argentine (?) sausage on my husband's plate, along with the array of mild to very spicy sauces, was the best I have ever tried! When the disco lights came on and I heard drums being played I did not expect them to be for me! What a fun birthday surprise! Yummy chocolate cake vodka shot with lime!! I am SO glad we chose Bolivar for our meal on my actual birth date last week! Loved it! We will return!
Went here for dinner with 3 friends on a weekend trip to Miami. We loved the food and the ambiance of the place. It was a bit loud because they had live music and the singer was walking around singing and getting tables to sing. This was fun but not the most conducive atmosphere to intimate chatter with your table-mates if that's what you're looking for. We were there on a Friday night at 9:00 so that is probably something they just do on the weekend nights.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Bolivar. When we walked in, the general vibe is very energetic and fun. They had a stage area with a very, very talented salsa singer who interacted with the tables who were enjoying it and knew when others were a bit more private. There is a small dance area for those that enjoy to dance salsa. The food was very good. I recommend the lomo saltado and patacones!
From the moment we walked in to Bolivar, it was apparent that this would not be an ordinary dining experience. Fantastic music with a beautiful live singer engulfed us, as we were attended by an equally beautiful hostess.
Once seated, we received impeccable service from the cadre of young, talented waiters and waitresses.
We started off with a pair of delicious Pisco cocktails, while thoroughly enjoying the complimentary appetizer. Still enjoying the great musical entertainment, we continued our dinner with the Ceviche Sampler plate. The fish was fresh, the sauces were delicious, and the presentation was very nice.
After another round of creative drinks, we ate some empanadas and finished with the Bolivar Ceviche plate, all of which was delicious.
To top of an unforgettable evening, the singer sang our requested song and we danced Bachata, in the middle of the restaurant!
I can't wait to come back to Miami Beach and visit Bolivar again.
My friend and I enjoyed our dinner at Bolivia. The wait staff was very attentive food was excellent I must mention the sweet rice wonderful. There was live entertainment very nice but we were tired after a day of the beach and left after the first piece I'm sure it would have been a fun night had we stayed longer.
We went to Bolivar because we had heard the food and ambiance were great. The food was excellent. We loved everything we tried. The ceviches were awesome. However, We went on a Thursday night and there weren't many people there. The music was good, but the crowd was not as lively as I had read in previous reviews. It must have been an off night, because everything thing else matched the other reviews. I truly enjoyed it and so did my wife. So we will probably try it again on a Friday night.
We came to the new location and the place was PACKED!! live music, soccer game was on, big parties, bar full! Service is amazing as usual, I would've loved to get the waitress name to give her credit, management was always making sure everyone was being taken care of, I work in the industry so I know how it is when is busy... Food came quick only thing I wasn't happy was with the lighting, I had to use my phone as a flashlight to go through the menu and to eat to see what I was eating exactly, I know they're are remodeling the place because there was a ladder on a corner so I'm hoping next time we stop by there is more light. Hoping to come back soon and sit at the bar to enjoy some tapas and cocktails.
I loved Bolívar and would highly recommend it. I came to Bolívar on a Friday night and was seated promptly.
We got some fruity sangria for the table while listening to the live entertainment singing popular Latin hits making it a very relaxing and enjoyable experience.
The menu has a variety of dishes from Peru and Colombia which will make it easy ordered a few. You can't go wrong with their empanadas and yuca fritas but the arepa was delicious and sweet (almost like a dessert). I often have lomo saltado so I tried the chicken version of it (pollo saltado) and it was just as delightful.
Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable about the food preparation. Overall, the atmosphere gets you in the right mood after a long day and it's a free plus that comes with dining here.
A group of old friends were in Miami for a wedding and coincidentally there was a birthday (OK, mine) one of the evenings. We booked Bolivar at fairly short notice and were delighted with it. Food was really good and very reasonably priced and service (for a table of about 10-12 of us) was first class. Wine, though basic, was well-priced and overall ambience was great. A very enjoyable evening.
I was really excited to try out this place given the rave reviews. However, the food was subpar. The drinks were awesome...food plating was great...but I didn't find the food to taste authentic. I ordered the lomo saltado and it was a tad salty, the beef wasn't flavored and the rice was mushy.
It was my birthday and the celebration/music/singing was by far the BEST I've ever seen in a restaurant. Servers were nice but incredibly SLOW and it wasn't even busy.
Slowest service I've ever experienced. We should have left as multiple tables did. Undrinkable wine, overly greasy food, a wait of 80 mins for the meal to arrive. The management huddled gossiping or griping while the wait staff tried to keep up. It was the low point of the trip.
We had a great time! Amazing service! Wonderful singer and band, a few diners dancing salsa between tables! Loved the tapas, especially the artichokes, calamari and skirt steak... with varying degrees of hot sauces! The fish dishes in sauces we had didn't quite match the tapas (salmon overcooked), but the lomo saltado was heavenly and all the accompanying veggies and rice were yummy! The wine list was pretty decent. Overall I'd say that the value for money was pretty darn good for South Beach and how nice to feel genuinely welcome too!
We are not from this area of South Florida and we wanted to have dinner before a show in Miami. We picked this restaurant because of the positive reviews on Yelp and we were seeing Jackson Browne at the Fillmore after dinner. Our group of six all like Peruvian and South American dishes so this restaurant seemed like the bomb. We arrived a bit late because of traffic and mentioned the show to our waitress. She was so accommodating, Our food was brought out quickly, The food was delicious! Great presentation! I will definately be coming back.
While in town for a few days in Miami Beach, I thought I'd look for a fun latin restaurant to have dinner at. While service was impeccable, I wasn't all too impressed with the quality of their seafood. Since their staff's service was impeccable and because I didn't get a chance to try their other meats, I would still strongly recommend this restaurant to others.
this place is a tapas gem! Great energy and great food- they were so happy to
have us there, it was a nice change from the crazy scene of Ocean Drive. We ordered 4 tapas
all delish- shrimp, mussels, artichokes and pork belly; then we split a steak entree with a bottle of
wine and a tres leches cake all for less than $100. Lovely evening with live music.
Wonderful service and I really love the ideas and concepts for the food here. However, they utterly failed on execution. Had the Mariscos al Ajillo. The sauce was wonderful, however all of the seafood was terribly overcooked. Mussels didn't taste fresh, and all of the calamari and scallops were chewy. Wife ordered the Pescado Margarita. Again, great concept, but fish was overcooked and a little dry. Server's didn't ask what temperature to cook the fish to, but I'm not sure it would have mattered.
Overall, would not return unless they really step up their game in the kitchen.
We were a little apprehensive to try Bolivar based in the December reviews if long wait times and poor service. The reviews prior to December were all excellent. We gave it a try and our experience was excellent. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Both our meals were delicious! A must try!
The menu selection was varied and exciting, the ambiance was cool and relaxed, the food itself was amazing, diverse and fresh and the location was very easy to find (for us tourists to Miami) and conveniently close to Ocean Drive. This restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip to Florida and Miami and we will definitely dine here again when we return.
