Bocanova - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
I booked a table for Aug. 6, but apparently they closed. Thanks for letting me know, Bocanova. You could have at least left a message on your phone machine. Instead the phone just rings and rings. I won't be visiting you in the future, no matter where you are located.
Had a small 30-year reunion with college friends and the menu here is extensive, offering a wide range of choice for any palette. Although it is Latin influenced, the food is flavorful, but not overpowering. With the brunch menu available, the choices are even broader. The service was attentive and polite. They let us stay and catch up and didn't rush us out, which was greatly appreciated.
I am sad that Bocanova will be moving from Jack London Sq. It so wonderful to sit outside and look out over the water and the boats with the sun shining down. It is also a great place to go if you have a furry friend as they are warmly welcomed on the patio. On Sunday, you can wander out into the farmer's market. I hope they return to JL Sq after the renovation . . .
Bocanova has amazing South American cuisine. The cuisine is unique and every dish is fabulous. Unfortunately the restaurant is moving but we understand it will reopen and we can hardly wait. This is one of our favorite go-to restaurants for lunch or gourmet but not pretentious dinner.
I've been several times and the food and service was always good to excellent. They are closing soon and not reopening until November 2017 in a new location (old Pican location in Uptown). Due to this, they've severely reduced their menu options which was a huge disappointment. Furthermore, their pricing is rather outrageous with appetizer portions running in the $15-18/range for extremely small portions. For example, we ordered the scallop appetizer and it was literally a single scallop that they sliced into 4 very thin pieces. I wouldn't recommend going here at this time. If they want to succeed in their new location this kind of practice and prices aren't going to fly.
Had French toast that was excellent and slightly crispy on the outside, but the thickness of the bread made the center less interesting (although good for sopping up poached eggs). I love sitting by the water and will miss that at their new location.
This restaurant is a longtime fave of mine, and I wish them well with their move!
Options for vegetarians are limited, but more problematic, they're just not very good...both poorly conceived and poorly executed. Our server was very nice, easily the high point of the experience. Not terrible, but as there are so many better options, I'd be hard-pressed to think of a reason to return.
When Bocanova first opened, it was amazing. We quickly learn what our favorite dishes were. Fast forward a few years later, and the food is not as good as it used to be. The deviled eggs were flat and the infamous croissant bread pudding that we loved and dreamt about was lackluster. I won't be returning again.
Great small plates
Fun lunch or casual dinner with cocktails
Tuna cerviche and chicken wings were both tasty
Service was just ok
20 percent service charge is added to your total
So the incentive to have good is taken away
We ate outside with great view of marina
We've been to this restaurant three times in the last couple of years, and based on our most recent experience, we will not be returning. The portions were small, the food was average, and the service was abysmal. The "whole fish" turned out to be a small filet and definitely not worth the price. Our waitress was not only inattentive, but rude and condescending. An hour after being served drinks and appetizers, we had to walk across the restaurant to find the waitress to take our entree orders. No apology was given. We asked for bread, and when it didn't come by the end of our dinner, the waitress said she entered the order and blamed someone else for not bringing it. The restaurant adds a mandatory 20% tip to all bills, and while we would normally support this practice, in this instance it seems to have created a reverse insentive to provide good service. Very dissappointed.
Wife's birthday dinner. At first, too noisy, but noisy party left. We asked for bread - delicious sour dough, had shrimp ceviche with that, delicious. Then the scallops, yum, and couscous/asparagus/mushroom dish that was outstanding. We'll definitely be back!
We arrived for a 7:45 Friday evening reservation on the patio and were quickly seating. The location is awesome and the patio is very comfortable. 20 minutes later we still had not seen our waiter. We asked a bus person, and he acted surprised and brought us some water. A few minutes later the manager game by, apologized, and took our drink and appetizer order. These were quickly delivered and were delicious (and the manager agreed to comp the drinks because of the poor/no service). 25 minutes later still no waiter (making a total of 45 minutes). We again flagged down a bus person. About 15 minutes later a waiter from a neighboring section came by and took our order. All went fine from there, though it was a bit of a challenge to refresh our drink order. The food was delicious. We were charged for our "free" drinks in the first version of the check but the waiter corrected the bill and took them off a revised check.
The totally horrible service was a real puzzler, as the food was quite good and the location is very nice. To rub salt in the wounds, the restaurant charges a mandatory 20% gratuity. So, even though the service was awful, we left a nice "tip."
The restaurant was not particularly busy for a warm Friday night, so maybe others have had our experience with the service.
We may return because of the excellent food and pleasant location, but we will certainly not do so if we have anywhere to be later in the evening.
Have been consistently disappointed with the quality of the food, and its value. Menu items are definitely overpriced for mediocre-to-decent quality food. Location and waterfront ambience are great, but the food just doesn't hold up. For the prices they are charging, I would expect spectacular food, and this just sort of falls flat.
Like all places in JL Square, this is not a culinary destination but a place to meet friends and enjoy the waterfront. But the food - which is really upscale Mexican and not pan latin - is pretty good and both indoor and outdoor settings are very nice. They have some fun cocktails too.
This is the worst restaurant have been to in a long time. We eat out about two times a week. The menu is hard to figure out, and for what you get. I think they very over priced. We ordered short ribs and they gave us some Mexican type of food. They also mixed up the second course. We ordered Lamb, for $35.00 and it was a small piece so tough we could not finish it. I would never tell a friend to go there.
We have never had a bad dish at Bocanova! Nice place to go on sunny days, one can sit outside and Sundays there is a farmers market right there. I love their cocktails. We always start with the crab deviled eggs. The duck taquitos are wonderful and very good, and very creative salads. The brioche bread pudding with a very dark chocolate ice cream scoop is heavenly.
