About Boca Chica Restaurant
Boca Chica Mexican Restaurant has served the flavorful, authentic cuisine of Mexico since 1964. It was then that Guillermo and Gloria Frias opened the doors to their new restaurant that seated only 28 patrons. Today, Boca Chica has grown substantially and is rated "one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Twin Cities," according to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine’s March 2009 issue. The authenticity of the food is maintained by making everything from scratch, the old-fashioned way, with fresh ingredients. Even the fiery salsa is still made with fresh tomatoes, chiles, and that special Frias family touch. Our menu includes some of the more traditional foods such as guisados, sopes, carne asada, chile rellenos, and tamales. Taste is never compromised. We also have a full bar featuring the city’s best selection of Mexican beers and premium tequilas. Voted "Best Margarita" by City Pages.

Boca Chica Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Maybe it was only me, I felt like I could tell the tortilla chips tasted fresh. I knew then the meal served will not be frozen and reheated. I ordered a chicken enchilada and it came out promptly. The portion sizes were huge and tasted like it was prepared for me. The only knock is I wish the chicken was infused with some spice. Instead they relied on the salsa topping. Unfortunately, to do that, it would take another 30 minutes to prepare my food for marinating the chicken. That would mean they would have to prepare it in advance and no longer fresh. I'd rather take fresh food. Our waitress also was also attentive to our table even though she was assisting with a party of 20. The decor was pretty good too.
Been coming for at least 20 years. Best authentic Mexican food. I've tried many restaurants around Twin Cities, and always come back to Boca Chica's. Way back when, they used to make house Margharita from scratch. Now its premixed from the spout. Not nearly as good as I recall.
My favorite Twin City Mexican restaurant for many years. Haven't been back for a few years and it was "just like old times" ----- same ambiance, excellent unhurried service, terrific family recipes, and on and on! Took a friend for a special night and a new experience for her ( she loves Mexican food) ----- Perfect.
When we are in the Twin Cities to visit family we always try to include a visit to Boca Chica. We live in Seattle, but I am a native of San Antonio, TX and always look for good Mexican food when I travel. Boca Chica's menu includes much more than some of the standard, blah TexMex I have found at other restaurants in the area. This particular visit was Friday evening, the day after Thanksgiving. It was very busy and a bit noisier than usual, but not surprising for that day. Several large family groups were easily accommodated, while the two of us were also served in a timely manner.
I say, Viva Boca Chica!
I have been here several times before and don't recall any issues but this time I was very dissatisfied with the service. The waitress seemed to not like us from the beginning. We had a reservation because I anticipated a crowd but it wasn't an issue. It took us 2 hours from sitting down to finally getting our check. We had our to-go boxes for 20 minutes before the check was given to us. Every table around us received a couple turnovers of customers that were served and had left before we completed our evening. The food was good. Service not so much. We did complain and received a discount but I don't enjoy having the awkward task of having to complain in the first place.
Authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices. Watch out for the margaritas; they're so strong we could hardly drink them. The service was good but the restaurant was out of certain menu items even though the night was young. We enjoyed the special birthday dessert, delivered with a large sombrero that made for a great photo opp. Overall, very tasty food, personable staff and a decent setting.
The food was delicious. Our server was nice and attentive. Only weird/awkward part was even though I made a reservation in advance, the hostess tried to seat us in probably the most undesirable table in the restaurant (busy two top right at the entrance of the dining area) and when we requested a different location (plenty of other open tables), she tried to argue that there were "many reservations." She eventually conceded and sat us at a different table. Having worked in the restaurant industry both as a hostess and server, I would have never denied a diner's request, especially when there were clearly numerous seating options.
The reservation was easy to place on line and there was no confusion when we arrived at the restaurant. The food was outstanding as usual. We were there on a Sunday, which was a first for me. It was a buffet and it was good, but I perter an opportunity to also order off a menu.
