Boathouse English Bay Ratings and Reviews
Not a variety to substitute on veggies nor the cooking cheap canola oil. Front door gals not welcoming , my kid fell down the stairs and they did not care , literally looked away. Restroom facility was inconvenient location. Food was not great at all. Obvious management holds back on substitute menu items
Came here because I live sea food and we were celebrat8ng my boyfriends birthday. The restaurant and the decor was lovely and a nice setting for a special occasion. To be honest the food was a let down. I would expect the food that I had in a bar or average venue. What my boyfriend had ( crab ravioli) was quite nice. Everything else left a lot to be desired. We still had a nice evening but I wouldn't return or recommend.
Where to start! Had an 8:30 reservation...we arrived on time to a vacant reception area and at first thought the restaurant may be closed....a host? arrived and then promptly left without a welcome! She arrived back and said "follow me" which we did...my mom is elderly and had a hard time climbing the very long set of stairs to the restaurant. Had we known the layout we would definitely not chosen it for this reason alone. Ambience is non existent...very old and out dated. View is spectacular but so would have been the Cactus Club across the street! The service was ok at best however we could have overlooked that and the ambience had the food been great but it was not! We had out of town guests from Ethiopia and thought a nice meal of our awesome BC seafood would be fitting. So disappointing!!!!! My husband had steak and lobster, the lobster was absolutely over cooked and dry, two of us had the lobster grill which had salmon, shrimp skewer (called prawns) and a stuffed lobster tail....well...the lobster tail stuffing was horrible...it tasted like cream cheese and who knows what blah yuk...the salmon was very fishy (I come from a fishing family and know good salmon!) the shrimp skewer was ok tasted like some steamed shrimp but ok and the wild rice pilaf soooo salty nobody ate it.... my mom had the Miso crusted halibut and only ate a few bites so we packed it up to take home. I tasted it at home and it was also so salty that it was inedible. My mom has dementia so didn't speak up but I felt badly that we hadn't sent her meal back! Also have to mention when we decided to have the "make it a meal option" when we ordered our meal we had to advise up front which dessert option we would like....one guest changed her mind but it was already preordered...not sure if that's standard protocol but not a fan...seemed like a fast food joint! Long and short we will never go back! Restaurant was not busy and I can see why. Truly felt we got the dregs!! Very poor!
Spectacular ambience, even without a window seat. A little noisy early on but less so later in the evening. Nice to see Sangria on the menu. The appetizer and desert for an extra $10 was fabulous and a great idea for couples who like to share. We were celebrating an occasion and did not feel rushed. A neighbourhood gem for sure.
Went for a birthday lunch. One person in our party was celebrating a milestone birthday and we mentioned it on the reservation. We also mentioned that we wanted the Thanksgiving menu and nowhere on the Boathouse website did it say that the Thanksgiving menu was only at dinner time. Even with a "happy birthday" balloon in hand (and the mention in the reservation) the hostess made no effort to say "happy birthday". Our server originally didn't wish a happy birthday, but when reminded he did make things right by bringing a complimentary piece of cake with a candle on it. At least the view was spectacular and the cajun cod tacos were delicious. The burger was not bad but not spectacular either. Overall a bit disappointing. Attention to the reservation details and more accurate mention of when the Thanksgiving menu was available would have made the experience more enjoyable.
Food was decent. Service was inattentive and uncoordinated. Waiters were more worried about setting up empty tables than taking care of tables with customers. Ordered a bottle of wine that never made it to the table because the bartender couldn't find it. It may have been a bad night, but it was a bad experience.
Food was great - steak and grilled prawns with mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. The portion was deceptively small, but ultimately very filling. Great peppercorn sauce on the steak, nicely cooked to my liking and the mashed potatoes were very rich. On the downside, I found the place very noisy, which overshadowed the entire experience. We had a 6:45 reservation and left shortly after finishing our meals, since I REALLY dislike having to yell and strain to be heard. I could hardly hear my one friend across the table. I would have been happy to hang out longer otherwise, but the noise was too much for me.
Excellent service. Our waiter was really great. Your staff gave me a table overlooking the water as I'd asked for. My nephew was visiting from out of town and it was his birthday so I wanted the window table. Also our waiter brought a dessert with a candle for a birthday surprise. I was very impressed. Thank you. It was a good meal but definitely not the best I've ever had. The waiter was nice but it felt very high pressure with his reccomendations for every course. Then to listen to him do a similar song and dance at each adjacent table was distracting and redundant. And-this place tries to get you to sign up for a $25 VIP card at the end of your meal. Felt more like being at a commission furniture store. Food was good but I've had better tasting seafood at the keg!
Love the venue, views and food. Not so popular as a formal dining experience its become more of a family spot. We had no problem with a late registration as interior never ckose to full on a Sat. Deck though was full - sunny day. Special was great, service and food good. They push their $25.00 Landry rest grp club - a USA chain.
We picked this restaurant because we had people coming from overseas and we wanted to be able to book a water view. We had 8 people and kids can't really wait to be seated. It met our expectations that way, service and food was good. But it is extremely overpriced and in need of refurbishment.
