Bluefin Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
This is one of the most Americanized, poorly executed examples of a sushi restaurant I’ve ever been to. The edamame was over cooked and chewy. The grilled octopus was served on a toothpick skewer with a little red pepper and potato. Having been to Japan, nowhere was there anything remotely resembling this. Sushi should be all about the rice and the way the fish is cut, thereby maximizing the flavor. The sashimi i had was cut into large, unappealing chunks with very little taste and poor mouthfeel. Save your money go to Wasa instead. This is a restaurant for wealthy people from Orange County that think this is what good sushi tastes like
The food is terribly expensive for what you get. Why is some funky seasoned rice served separately with the chirashi? Wtf? For $40 I expect a more than just tuna, shrimp and salmon. The other items were ok. You're just paying to eat in corona del Mar... Go somewhere else.
Bluefin is the BEST sushi restaurant we've ever been to and we've been to many as far as GREAT SUSHI. The service fluctuates every time we visit not sure why. We've noticed they only have 1 waiter and the hostess serves as a that as well as a waitress. She's good some times but she's rude other times which for my wife and I service is a huge part of the dinner experience. The sushi isn't cheap in pricing and it's in Newport Beach so you expect great service period. We've been going there for about 2 months now, almost every week at least once but that's about to change as the service does not match the quality of the food by far.
Bluefin was once my husband and my favorite sushi restaurant in town. Unfortunately it has gone far downhill. The food is not as good and WAY overpriced! A $30 lobster roll consisted of a tiny piece of lobster and a mound of rice around it that wasn't good at all. Also, our waiter was the water boy. The best thing on the menu is the crispy tuna. Otherwise there is way better sushi out there at a more reasonable and not so insulting price.
Wow! I haven't had sushi this good since I lived in Japan! Very authentic and fresh. The pieces were cut in perfect sizes not gargantuan like a lot of Americanized sushi. We sat at the sushi bar. They offer an incredible variety that I haven't seen elsewhere. (At least not in San Diego) They had traditional dishes but also some very modern innovations like Kobe beef sushi. Their alcohol selection was also amazing. I will definitely be making the hour drive back for more!!!
This was our "special" sushi place - a bit overpriced, but the quality of the fish was worth saving up for the splurge. However, it would be surprising if we went back again - two of us had bones in our sushi: one in a seared albacore sushi, and one in a yellowtail sushi. I've never in all my life experienced this, but it really made me nausea, and of course it happened very early in the night. Well, we at least saved a bunch of money because my appetite left me.
This restaurant never disappoints. The food quality and preparation is excellent, service is efficient and unobtrusive and the place has a nice ambience. They have a thoughtful menu which doesn't come off as a hustle as many do; very direct and no nonsense.
I recently chose Bluefin for my friend's birthday dinner. It was our first time and we'd been wanting to try it, so we were really excited. Unfortunately, it ranked at the top of the worst restaurant service experiences I've ever had. When I got there, the waitress couldn't find my reservation. After I was seated, I sat for 10 minutes without being acknowledged. Then the same waitress (named Sawako?) eventually asked if I wanted something to drink. She brought my wine but immediately walked away. 10 more minutes passed and I flagged down a waiter asking who the server for my table was. He said he didn't know, but brought the soup I asked for. The restaurant had even started clearing out somewhat from the dinner rush. At this point, my friend and I decided to finish what we had and go to the great little Italian restaurant next door. We were at Bluefin for a total of an hour, and in that entire time, nobody ever took our dinner order. In fact, the menus and sushi order slip were still on the table when we left. Overall, the service was deplorable and this establishment didn't even meet the basic expectations of customer service. Given the high prices and the location, one would assume the wait staff would strive to achieve high standards. Further, this waitress has no business working in the service industry, and it appears that her behavior is a pattern, based on some of the previous reviews. By the way, when we went next door to Modo Mio, I explained my predicament to the hostess and she said not to worry and that they would take care of us right away, even though they were full. And they did.
