Super in all regards! You'll love this place whether you order omakase, bento box, or sushi and sashimi.

Good sushi and sashimi. Drinks were poor (e.g., no grapefruit juice; bartender does not know how to make a greyhound) and service little was slow on the uptake

The best of the best! Amazing, beautiful, delicious in whatever form you order--omakase, Bento Box, a la carte, special tastes--all are great. The tables atmosphere is rather elegant, but not unfriendly and the same applies to the servers. Bar seating is a louder atmosphere, good way to make new friends and get menu suggestions, and watch the chefs at work. Don't miss the sake, or best of all, a sake flight.

Outstanding and authentic Japanese food. Friendly service with a smile. View if ocean. Lunch bento one if the best I have ever had and I have travelled throughout Japan. Will definitely visit this treasure again to try the omakase.

Losing it edge. Blue Fin roll was bad, not like in the past. Everything was so so. The place was not crowded on a night when it typically would be. Somethings happened to its quality.

Been here before a few times and the nigiri had always been amazing. Seems like their standards/quality have since declined. The fish was cut very poorly. One piece was mangled, which is unfortunate since, here, one piece is what you get per order. The quality of the fish was average-good, meaning, what you could find in most reasonably priced, decent sushi places in Newport Beach or Irvine. Before, the quality here was noticeably better than most places, making the high prices worth it. Perhaps worst of all, the rice to fish ratio was way off, I assume to save money. Finally, the rice wasn't even prepared properly. It was overcooked. Very unfortunate.

Perhaps before, the prices were worth the quality of fish and skill of the sushi chefs, but not any more. Standards have dropped but prices have not. Big surprise.

I'm never one to mind paying higher prices for great sushi; hence, why I had returned after dining here a few times before. What I do mind is paying twice as much for the same quality and cuts of fish you could get nearly anywhere else in the surrounding areas.

As for service, we were never told her name but the woman who was serving us seemed impatient. Yes, she brought us our food and sake but left out such frills as friendliness, attentiveness, concern for our experience, etc. The manager, who at least had a smile on her face, didn't seem to notice our subpar experience. She didn't ask so we didn't bother saying anything.

Very disappointed. I can only assume ownership has changed since I had last been here.

I don't understand the hype.
Spent $260 for a party of three, and found ourselves driving away with a sense of regret.

The service staff seemed a bit untrained but were friendly and accommodating. However, for the price, the food was very disappointing. Expensive ingredients don't always result in yummy taste.

There are too many places with much better food at much better price so I will not be going back.

My family and I, while on vacation, ate at Bluefin. It was definitely a memorable meal! All the ingredients are fresh and beautifully prepared and presented. We loved every dish we ordered. The service was quick and attentive. The wine menu, while not extensive, was well priced. We would definitely come back if we are in the area!!

I have Japanese food at least once a week, travel a lot on business, and I think BlueFin is the best sushi / sashimi restaurant in the country. Expensive, but Takashi Abe and his supporting cast of chefs make this a superb dining experience, "edible art." Fresh ingredients, wide range of specials all brilliantly prepared. Be bold and tell the attentive staff "Omakase" (feed me what the chef wishes...don't say this if you're concerned about the price). Great setting, fantastic food and a broad enough menu to make you want to go back...often

We ordered the omakase and it was splendid! We'll do it again and again. Essentially this is Chef's choice and at Blue Fin it has variety, many different flavors, total freshness, and some haute cuisine, too. The presentation and flavor of the abalone portion cannot be given sufficient praise. There's no reason to drive to Nobu Malibu if you're closer to Corona del Mar and Blue Fin.

Had lunch during NB Restaurant Week. First time there. The appetizer was nothing special. The sushi dish was fresh and tasty. My fish and mushrooms entree was just ok. Husband had the shrimp entree again just ok. Fish soup was nice and hot but it had rice in it which was impossible to eat without a spoon. The mango pudding dessert was amazing, so yummy and the lychee ice cream that came with it was delicious too. The petite slices of strawberries, mangoes and blueberries was a nice touch. Our waiter and the service staff was very nice and prompt. The only thing that spoiled our visit was when we were paying our bill, I asked if we could have refills of our hot green tea. The waitress actually told us no because somebody had a 1pm reservations and she wanted the table. I informed her that we actually had 1pm res but arrived early. She then saw that she didn't charge us for the hot tea that we had during lunch and had to redo our check. She said that because we had a 1pm res. she agreed to refill our tea. I looked around and there were 3 seats open at the sushi bar and two other people just got up to leave at the regular tables and there were only two people waiting at the door. We were there from 12:20pm - 1:15pm, just shy of an hour for a 3-course meal and she wanted to kick us out. She ruined our lunch and left a bad memory of our time there. We will not be returning.

We've eaten at Bluefin many time before, and it has been consistently outstanding. We were a bit disappointed this time. The restaurant experience did not live up to our past experiences here. We felt we were a bit rushed, perhaps because they were pretty heavily booked during Newport Beach Restaurant Week. hk

Bluefin is truly authentic sushi. Our Japanese colleague joined us and concurred that the quality of preparation is equal to a fine Tokyo sushi bar. We enjoyed the Restaurant Week menu which was three courses. We all started with a lovely amuse bouche followed by delicious crispy rice miso soup with snapper which was flavorful and light. Two of us had the seared ahi salad with a perfect portion of seared, sesame crusted ahi, salad greens and a piquant dressing. Just perfect. Our colleague enjoyed the omakase sushi for the second course. The sushi was perfect and abundant! This dish alone would have been a full meal. For the third course I had the grilled tiger shrimp and scallops which were perfectly cooked and enhanced with a light, perfect sauce below the shellfish that added just the right accent. The whole meal was wonderful and we are already planning our next visit to Bluefin!

The sushi at Bluefin is THE BEST around the OC, we visit at least Once a month but we try to hit this spot Twice per month. The sushi is AMAZING super fresh, excellent variety, the sushi chefs are very friendly and prompt, however the service at the tables lacks the level of service to match the food BY FAR. We usually spend between $320 and $500 every time we visit, we prefer to sit by the sushi bar as the sushi chefs do a much better job tending to us than when we sit at a table. This should be fixed, I know bluefin does very good but if the level of service was better at the tables this restaurant would never have an empty table which the management MUST take a look at very soon.

Beautiful presentation and delicious food (fresh sushi)! Great service! Quiet enough to enjoy catching up with a friend!

Restaurant in Crystal Cove Promenade, across the street from the ocean. After lunch, walked across the parking lot to enjoy the view.

Bluefin never fails to have the freshest fish possible, presented with flair. We eat here fairly frequently, and the menu is always changing depending on what the chef finds that's up to his high standards. If you're really hungry, do the omikase- it's a LOT of wonderful plates that are just delightful! My husband and I will split it, and then maybe order one more item if there's any room left. Awesome!

It wasn't the same as in Japan or South Korea for omakaze. I had expected too much from this place - mistakenly believing that higher price in an affluent neighborhood meant I would be served omakaze that at the very mininum - must be consumed in < 30 seconds. The rice is everything - it lacked bodied flavor, I expected more.
