Bluefin Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I have Japanese food at least once a week, travel a lot on business, and I think BlueFin is the best sushi / sashimi restaurant in the country. Expensive, but Takashi Abe and his supporting cast of chefs make this a superb dining experience, "edible art." Fresh ingredients, wide range of specials all brilliantly prepared. Be bold and tell the attentive staff "Omakase" (feed me what the chef wishes...don't say this if you're concerned about the price). Great setting, fantastic food and a broad enough menu to make you want to go back...often
We ordered the omakase and it was splendid! We'll do it again and again. Essentially this is Chef's choice and at Blue Fin it has variety, many different flavors, total freshness, and some haute cuisine, too. The presentation and flavor of the abalone portion cannot be given sufficient praise. There's no reason to drive to Nobu Malibu if you're closer to Corona del Mar and Blue Fin.
Had lunch during NB Restaurant Week. First time there. The appetizer was nothing special. The sushi dish was fresh and tasty. My fish and mushrooms entree was just ok. Husband had the shrimp entree again just ok. Fish soup was nice and hot but it had rice in it which was impossible to eat without a spoon. The mango pudding dessert was amazing, so yummy and the lychee ice cream that came with it was delicious too. The petite slices of strawberries, mangoes and blueberries was a nice touch. Our waiter and the service staff was very nice and prompt. The only thing that spoiled our visit was when we were paying our bill, I asked if we could have refills of our hot green tea. The waitress actually told us no because somebody had a 1pm reservations and she wanted the table. I informed her that we actually had 1pm res but arrived early. She then saw that she didn't charge us for the hot tea that we had during lunch and had to redo our check. She said that because we had a 1pm res. she agreed to refill our tea. I looked around and there were 3 seats open at the sushi bar and two other people just got up to leave at the regular tables and there were only two people waiting at the door. We were there from 12:20pm - 1:15pm, just shy of an hour for a 3-course meal and she wanted to kick us out. She ruined our lunch and left a bad memory of our time there. We will not be returning.
We've eaten at Bluefin many time before, and it has been consistently outstanding. We were a bit disappointed this time. The restaurant experience did not live up to our past experiences here. We felt we were a bit rushed, perhaps because they were pretty heavily booked during Newport Beach Restaurant Week. hk
Bluefin is truly authentic sushi. Our Japanese colleague joined us and concurred that the quality of preparation is equal to a fine Tokyo sushi bar. We enjoyed the Restaurant Week menu which was three courses. We all started with a lovely amuse bouche followed by delicious crispy rice miso soup with snapper which was flavorful and light. Two of us had the seared ahi salad with a perfect portion of seared, sesame crusted ahi, salad greens and a piquant dressing. Just perfect. Our colleague enjoyed the omakase sushi for the second course. The sushi was perfect and abundant! This dish alone would have been a full meal. For the third course I had the grilled tiger shrimp and scallops which were perfectly cooked and enhanced with a light, perfect sauce below the shellfish that added just the right accent. The whole meal was wonderful and we are already planning our next visit to Bluefin!
The sushi at Bluefin is THE BEST around the OC, we visit at least Once a month but we try to hit this spot Twice per month. The sushi is AMAZING super fresh, excellent variety, the sushi chefs are very friendly and prompt, however the service at the tables lacks the level of service to match the food BY FAR. We usually spend between $320 and $500 every time we visit, we prefer to sit by the sushi bar as the sushi chefs do a much better job tending to us than when we sit at a table. This should be fixed, I know bluefin does very good but if the level of service was better at the tables this restaurant would never have an empty table which the management MUST take a look at very soon.
Bluefin never fails to have the freshest fish possible, presented with flair. We eat here fairly frequently, and the menu is always changing depending on what the chef finds that's up to his high standards. If you're really hungry, do the omikase- it's a LOT of wonderful plates that are just delightful! My husband and I will split it, and then maybe order one more item if there's any room left. Awesome!
It wasn't the same as in Japan or South Korea for omakaze. I had expected too much from this place - mistakenly believing that higher price in an affluent neighborhood meant I would be served omakaze that at the very mininum - must be consumed in < 30 seconds. The rice is everything - it lacked bodied flavor, I expected more.
This is one of the most Americanized, poorly executed examples of a sushi restaurant I’ve ever been to. The edamame was over cooked and chewy. The grilled octopus was served on a toothpick skewer with a little red pepper and potato. Having been to Japan, nowhere was there anything remotely resembling this. Sushi should be all about the rice and the way the fish is cut, thereby maximizing the flavor. The sashimi i had was cut into large, unappealing chunks with very little taste and poor mouthfeel. Save your money go to Wasa instead. This is a restaurant for wealthy people from Orange County that think this is what good sushi tastes like
The food is terribly expensive for what you get. Why is some funky seasoned rice served separately with the chirashi? Wtf? For $40 I expect a more than just tuna, shrimp and salmon. The other items were ok. You're just paying to eat in corona del Mar... Go somewhere else.
Bluefin is the BEST sushi restaurant we've ever been to and we've been to many as far as GREAT SUSHI. The service fluctuates every time we visit not sure why. We've noticed they only have 1 waiter and the hostess serves as a that as well as a waitress. She's good some times but she's rude other times which for my wife and I service is a huge part of the dinner experience. The sushi isn't cheap in pricing and it's in Newport Beach so you expect great service period. We've been going there for about 2 months now, almost every week at least once but that's about to change as the service does not match the quality of the food by far.
Bluefin was once my husband and my favorite sushi restaurant in town. Unfortunately it has gone far downhill. The food is not as good and WAY overpriced! A $30 lobster roll consisted of a tiny piece of lobster and a mound of rice around it that wasn't good at all. Also, our waiter was the water boy. The best thing on the menu is the crispy tuna. Otherwise there is way better sushi out there at a more reasonable and not so insulting price.
