The quality of the fish here is outstanding. In fact, all the food is amazing. The staff is consistently amateurish, however. And while I love the quality of the food, I don’t make this a regular spot because the service is maddening. Appetizers come out way after everything else, beverage service is spotty, and menu items that are not available are not explained until after your order has been placed. If you want awesome food and don’t care about service, go! I still do, but with lowered expectations.
We go to Bluefin a couple times a year for celebrations. We went tonight to celebrate our 1-year anniversary of our marriage. The ambiance was different than what we were used to. There was a football game playing on the wall in the dining room. I think that is more appropriate for the bar area and took away from the special dining experience. Most of the food was to our expectations except the whole reason we were there: the sushi. We ordered the Rainbow roll and it just fell apart. We noticed the sushi chef looking at a menu a lot like he was using it to figure out what went into the rolls. Overall, we were not as impresses this time around. We will probably try something different for our next celebration.
Service was really slow and I found a bone in a piece of nigiri (not supposed to be there for those not familiar...). Restaurant tried to make it up with a free desert - we chose the chocolate soufflé - however it came out burnt on the bottom... would have really wanted to like the place, but ended up leaving disappointed.
The food was delicious and creative. The waitress was just the right amount of attentive and friendly and service was fast. The booth seats were very comfortable and the restaurant had an enjoyable atmosphere. Parking, on a Tuesday evening was plentiful in the parking lot (at least some of the street parking has local resident requirement restrictions).
I've been there many times and this time was such a disappointment. We arrived at 5pm and there weren't many patrons. Our appetizers came quickly as did our miso soup/salad. The entrees arrive with exception of mine. The waitress FINALLY told me that they forgot to make mine (or did she forget to put in the order). She said 5 minutes. 15 minutes later, I received my dinner. At this point, my friends were done eating and I felt rushed to eat as they were waiting on me. I wanted a refill on my lemonade and she confirmed it was lemonade, but brought me a sprite. It was just an overall disappointment. As convenient as it is to the Shark Tank, I'm no longer impressed.
The ambiance is great, and it's a good location - close enough to DTSJ but not in the middle of the hustle & bustle. There was only one other table seated between 12-1pm yet service was slow. The waitress barely checked on us. The drinks were watered down and the food was just okay. The bill was $81 for lunch... my sister and I split the bill and even though the suggested 15% tip amount was different on each receipt, that amount was actually equal to 24%.
Service was attentive, friendly, efficient. Food was tasty as always. Quite pricy and really loud room. Good for group of friends night out, as opposed to a quiet date time. Saw a lot of business people on the way to a Sharks game, so their expense accounts must have helped to inflate price tags.
BlueFin used to be my favorite Sushi restaurant in San Jose. No longer. Went there for my daughter's celebration, and it was so poor that I went back on a separate occasion to verify my experience.
The hamachi shot - which used to be amazing - is not a salty, fishy mess in the mouth. I would STRONGLY recommend against it. The rest of the sushi was just average - certainly not what the restaurant has done in the past.
Very sad to see this formerly excellent restaurant slide into mediocrity.
Great food, beautiful preparation and attentive service as usual - this is our absolute favorite place to dine out for sushi. But the music choice was odd - it was early evening and too 40 teenage angst music was playing and rather loud. It was a total disconnect for setting a mood that matched the elegance of the food and service. If the idea is to be hip young and cool that can still be achieved with more mature groovy electronica or other music genres if they prefer not to play classical which seems most appropriate. But I'll be back for sure.
The sushi was great and the prices reasonable. But we had stopped in before a concert and apparently every single person in the place was going to the same concert! So they were slammed with orders right at the same time, and all the customers were wanting to leave at the same time. But they are across the street from the SAP center – don't they deal with this every night?? They acted like they had never seen so many customers before! The service was so slow it was painful! We were dying it was so slow. Word to the wise.

Our first and last time st this restaurant.
The food was good, but high priced for the ambiance and service. We made reservations and then stood in the entry area for literally 5 solid minutes as employees dodged us while we attempted to get someone's attention. The place was dead and there were many staff members buzzing around but someone dropped the ball on receiving new guests. I ended up having to call and wave to the chef's in the back to get attention, but it was not a great start for a business meeting when I chose the location. Additionally the restaurant had the feel of a formerly high end establishment in decline. Nothing I would have noticed with simpler decor, but it dampened the ambiance to have scuffs, stains, chips and wear marks on nearly every surface, whether or not it was attempting the look of marble, glass door, and solid wood.
It was overpriced for the quality and service. The sushi had wasabi already in it but my husband does't eat wasabi so that didn't work out too well for him, the steak teryiaki was miniscule. The tempura sauce was sweet instead of savory, the chicken katsu comes with teryiaki sauce (more sweet) instead of katsu sauce but they don't tell you that when you order it. When I asked for the regular katsu sauce they brought it to me a lot later and it was straight from the refrigerator so my katsu ended up being cold. They ran out of Diet Coke after our first one so I asked for a Pellegrino instead, and that never came. The service was less than stellar. The food was fine, just not what we were expecting for the price. We were pretty disappointed because so many people love this place. Guess it's just not for us.
Overall the meal was delicious and the service was friendly and efficient. I will go back! The one thing that took away from my experience is one of the dishes had raw broccoli and carrot sticks on the plate that were shriveled with black discolored areas. It put into question the freshness of everything else on the plate. However the delicious flavors on everything else more than carried our experience and my four star rating did not dock them for this oversight.
Greeted by a very rude staff member (Jessica), she continued to exhibit an attitude entire visit. Rolls mediocre at best. Wasabi obviously old as color was a chartreuse old green. Was not as expected from reading other diners reviews. Will not be back.
The restaurant has a nice selection of teriyaki, tempura, cooked fish, and a good selection of sashimi, nigiri, and sushi -- definitely something for everyone. We ordered a sashimi plate and the saba, both of which were done beautifully and tasted wonderful. There's a decent cocktail selection (as well as a full bar) along with wine, saki, and soju.
The pictures of the place imply a sparse, modern room, but the reality is that it's a bit crowded and a bit noisy. The service was extremely slow, but they may just be understaffed.
I'd certainly give it another try.
