BlueFin Japanese Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Had dinner here for my birthday on a weekday. Decor is very nice and modern. Service was good. Our waiter was very friendly but he forgot our miso soup. We ordered the sashimi and sushi platter on a boat. Quality of fish was good, but I've had better. For San Jose, iI would say it's better than most other sushi restaurants. Also had the oysters and hamachi shooters, which were not bad but nothing special either. The hamachi shooters at Alexanders is better in my opinion. Overall, we had a good experience. I would definitely go here again to try other things on the menu.
We had a great time and a great dinner. We started with a cocktail at the bar. Dinner was great This time, we had sashimi, nigiri and a roll or two -- next time we will try other specials. The music during dinner sucked, just some kind of noisey stuff, actually couldn't tell what it was. After dinner, we went back into the bar for drinks and to watch the Sharks game.
Nice spot before going to the SJ arena. Decent parking, close to the venue. Good food, decent prices, friendly service. Had trouble making the reservation at my desired time because of OpenTable app using my phone's time settings which were irrelevant since I set my phone to another time zone for personal reasons.
My husband and I have been coming to Blue Fin for a few years now and enjoy the food.
The fish is always fresh, we've tried many of the items on the menu and we are always pleased. The only thing that I'm not sure of is the speed of service, almost every time we go there for dinner and this is the first lunch the server takes a while to first come take our order and once served they don't check to see if we want more drinks or something else. We always plan on taking a while when we are there as this seems to be norm.
So don't go there if you are in rush.
I have been to BlueFin a few times, and it's still the best quality fish in south bay! I've tried many sushi restaurants, and yes, this place is more expensive, but you can tell the quality difference which makes it worth it. We got the shishito pepper appetizer which was good but small. We then got the sushi/sashimi/nigiri boat which was a lot of food and a great value. We liked the fish by itself the most, so I would even skip sushi next time (and sushi is my favorite!) The service was only OK- We think the waiter took a break and didn't inform us, because there was a long gap when we didn't see anyone. Also the host ended up finishing our order- He was really nice, but it was odd. I do want to mention they had a lot of workers- About 4 in the kitchen and 4 waiters if you include the host, and an older lady (owner?) that served us the dessert. We had a total of 3 servers! This didn't happen to us before so I wouldn't say to skip eating here due to this, but I hope they read my review and fix the situation. The cheesecake dessert was small and not very good so next time I'd try the fried banana. The dessert should be as good as the fish! We will be back. Also a great location if you're going to SAP center. Overall Girl Says DO.
The snow crab sushi we ordered did not look lIke snow crab. It looked like all imitation crab on top of the rice. When we question the ingredients, the waitress explained it is combination of snow crab and imitation crab(50% each). To be honest, all we saw was imitation crab. Besides, we pointed out the menu does not have imitation crab spelled out. We would not have ordered a pair of imitation crab sushi for $7.90 Another item was about the Opentable online reward check. The waitress seems annoyed when we asked to use the reward check. She said the restaurant does not has the Opentable system set up, and can only take paper reward check. But we told her Opentable has stopped issuing paper check for a while. We don't understand how the restaurant can selectively choose to participate to the Opentable reservation but not the onliner reward program.
Food was good and the service was good overall. However there was no parking in their lot. I don't know if people parked there to go to other places like Whole Foods across the street. They will need to get their parking situation corrected. In the past, the lot was usually empty.
Service has improved greatly. The food was always great, but service seemed to always take forever; slow to take order, not checking back, slow to get food out. This visit was perfect. Wait staff took order, checked back, got food out in a reasonable time without hovering. VERY nice improvement. I've always recommended them based on the quality of the food. Great to be able to count on them for good service again as well.
I had the Sukiyaki which was fabulous, and we had vegetable tempera for appetizer. My friend had the Scottish salmon teriyaki and a baked salmon roll which was really delicious. We live quite a ways away so we generally go there when we have tickets at the SAP CENTER.
We've been to BlueFin a number of times with varying levels of service. Our last visit was the worst-- after waiting about 15 minutes for a server, we finally flagged someone down to ask for water and wait staff. 10 minutes later someone finally appeared to take our order, but no water. Food was "ok"- not worth the aggravation. The reason we will not return there, however, is that on top of extremely poor service, they charged my credit card about $100 more than my actual bill.
I traveled in the business world for thirty five years, closing business deals with clients, many at some of the finest restaurants in the world. I have dined at hundreds of restaurants around the world, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, American, French, Cuban, Greek, Italian and a few others. BlueFin restaurant is one of the top five restaurants on my list. Great food, great service, very nice relaxing atmosphere to dine in and competively priced. After reading other reviews of BlueFin, I understand that fast food junkies do not like certain things about this place, so as a warning to those type of diners, stay away, please. I do know that my wife & I will go back for more excellent food from there. A huge "Thank-You" to the owners, our waiter and the Chef of BlueFin for our wonderful dining experience.
The hostess was horrible and very young. Was not able to think strategically about how to seat people to maximize the occupancy. She would ask you to wait and then forget about you. took 20 min for anyone to take our drink order and then would take so long to get the drinks delivered. Food took too long as well.
Got there and there were 3 tables with people. Took our drink orders then did not return to the table for 10 minutes. Clearly the kitchen was slow. It took nearly an hour for all our food to come out. Waitress finally made a quiet apology for how slow it was. I would have expected a comped appetizer or drink or just coming by the table to let us know why it was taking so long. It looked like the cooks did several togo orders before ours. Also several orders for the bar. Seemed like there were 4 or 5 cooks. But just did not seem to prioritize the tables and those of us who made reservations.
Ate here a long time ago when it first opened up, remembered it was decent. They've stayed in biz for many years it seems, and I've walked by many times on the way to Sharks games. Finally booked it for dinner before Ellie Goulding concert. Really good all the way around, so happy I kept the reservation (my wife wanted to switch to SP2, but I held my ground). We had a great time!
