About Blue Spoon
Perched at the top of Munjoy Hill in Portland’s East end, we are a chef-owned restaurant built on fresh market ingredients, friends, and family. Chef/owner David Iovino grew up in a family that valued coming together over food, and that tradition has carried forward as the foundation of Blue Spoon.
We have fun in the kitchen, but we also couldn’t be more serious about what we do. That’s why we get our goods from the very best: Black Kettle Farm, Laughingstock Farm, Stone Cipher Farm, Fishbowl Farm, Freedom Farm, Valley View Farm eggs and meats, Wee Bit Farm beef and pork, Lankin’s Gorges Cheeses, Woolever Farm lamb, and Rick Tibbet’s mushrooms.

The Blue Spoon is a favorite. I often order the steak salad, and although the ingredients change frequently the salad is always delicious. This time it was made with kale and greens mix that was not good, primarily because the kale was so tough. I regularly eat salads with kale, but usually a younger kale is used. I should also note that there wasn't much to the salad and it was bland. Other ingredients were definitely needed. I hope that the ingredients for the steak salad will be changed before I return.
I had dinner with a friend Friday 12/1/17 at the Blue Spoon before a show at The Good Theater across the street. I eat there frequently and always enjoy it. It is small and cozy and the staff is excellent. The service is prompt and friendly and the food excellent.
As we had a 5:00 reservation it turned out that there is a happy hour before six. We each got wine for only $4, and mine was that night’s sample, which was very good.
I recommend the Blue Spoon wholeheartedly and intend to return there often in the future.
shared their daily "3 dips" (hummus) with grilled flatbread and it was excellent - mushroom with basil (his favorite), one with eggplant that was my favorite, and one with cauliflower and maple which was also quite good. I had the scallops small plate and the small plate of deep fried brussel spouts and was really pleased. He got the daily braising pot which was totally yummy. We had the "happy hour" beer & wine which we also thoroughly enjoyed and very modestly priced, so that the whole meal even with a coffee was just $70, and right across the street from the Good Theater production. It is small and intimate, so reservations might be recommended as every table had "reserved" when we got there at 5pm, and they were completely full when we left at 6:45 for the theater on a Wed night!
Great as always. Quiet, unhurried, delicious, healthy. I gave server a difficult task: no dairy, gluten free. Ended up with delicata squash salad with fried egg on the side. Delicious! Would have been even better with some sort of carb, eg rice or potato or something more interesting. Would have had polenta—but made with dairy, sadly :(

We’ve gone three times now to this restaurant and we fall in love more and more with each visit. We have had the same waitress and she is excellent- knowledgeable and helpful with food and wine selection. We love the cozy atomsphere and the menu variety. We love the creative twists the chef makes on every day foods like chicken and carrots. I think this is officially our favorite restaurant in Portland, which truly says something since the food scene is out of this world. Keep up the great work, Blue Spoon!
Met up with some girlfriends the other night.
The food was wonderful and the ambience was almost perfect.
Our table was very close to the ones on either side of us. At times it was difficult to move our chairs out to get up to use the restrooms. I had the mussels and my friends had the pollock and risotto-all were fantastic.
I'd been to the Front Room on two previous occasions and was happy with it, and recommending it to friends who'd never been. But this time, I was somewhat disappointed. One of the main reasons that I liked it was that unlike many restaurants in Portland these days, it wasn't noisy. But that wasn't the case this time, and I'm not sure why. It'd been been just as busy the first two times I'd been yet we'd been able to converse without shouting at each other! So, I didn't like that. And then I thought that my beet salad was rather tasteless. And although no one complained about their food choice, neither did anyone boast about it. Last, I think it's a little overpriced for what you get...
What a great place! Small and cozy. Loved the food, had the beet appetizer and scallops. My friends had the daily ragu over pasta and the risotto. All were superb! Great wine and craft cocktails. Pot de creme and flan were the perfect ending. Highly recommend!!
Really outstanding in every way. The space is charming and small. We tried the dips and mussels for app. Excellent. We had the heirloom tomato salad and the beet salad. Delicious. We tried the burger, chicken and ragu of the day. All great. Service knowledgeable and attentive. The folks running this place have got the formula. Highly recommended.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this restaurant! I was in town for the week and looking for something different/a new place to try. I cannot say enough about this GEM. After reviewing the menu, I wanted to go for the appetizers alone -and they far exceeded my expectations! The food and service were both EXCELLENT. The pricing is much lower than what I have paid at other restaurants for this quality. We [2 of us] ordered drinks and split 2 appetizers, 3 small entrees and 2 desserts and the total bill was 100.00 without tip! The portions are perfect - we both left full and even brought home left overs. The whole atmosphere is very positive/laid back. I was initially concerned about the parking but there were plenty of free spaces on side streets/near the restaurant. I will definitely be back [again and again!] THANK YOU for such a great experience!
This was our second time at Blue Spoon. It was a Monday evening at 6:30. Our first round of cocktails were great the appetizers and small plates were all creative and thoughtfully prepared. Our entree was superb. Our only complaint was that the place seemed understafffed. We asked our server for the cocktail menu again because we wanted a second round. She brought it, but then never came back for our order. We tried for about 30 minutes to get our server's attention but were unsuccessful so we finally asked for our check and left. She was apologetic, but it really shouldn't have happened. Otherwise, a delightful meal and drinks. We would go back for sure.
Four of us dined on a Monday and were happily surprised to find happy hour prices for wine and drafts all evening. So we ordered the cheese sampler & pickled veg app, and then the seared scallops. The first was a meager disappointment; 3 see-through small slices of 2 cheeses, and six bits of cured meat with a couple of overpickled veggies. Over priced. Scallops, however, were fresh, tender, and perfect. The hake entree was lovely, and the fresh pasta with meat and eggplant sauce delicious. As was the rib eye.

I honestly love the Blue Spoon. I have been there many times. I just don't think I would use Open Table to make a reservation there again. The table that we got was by far the worst one in the house. It was right next to the front door. We felt that we needed to adjust our chairs to avoid the opening door. Folks waiting for the host were standing right beside us all night. The waitress actually apologized for our table assignment. They really shouldn't have a table in this location or at least shouldn't use it for an Open Table reservation. Reserve it for walk-ins with the caveat "we are filled and this is all that we have left."
