Perched at the top of Munjoy Hill in Portland’s East end, we are a chef-owned restaurant built on fresh market ingredients, friends, and family.

We have fun in the kitchen, but we also couldn’t be more serious about what we do. That’s why we get our goods from the very best: Stonecipher Farm, , Valley View Farm eggs and meats, Archer Angus beef, and Broad Arrow Farm pork.

Disappointing. We’ve been going here for special occasions for years, but they’ve changed the menu format. Heavy on the small dishes and on the fermented/pickled side. Excellent drinks though.

Anniversary celebration at an outside table. Table was ready for us when we arrived, and the service was excellent! The menu is limited on a Tuesday night, but we both found dishes to our liking, and we had an excellent experience.

They've created a lovely outdoor space option, though there is nothing to be done about street noise. The food is fine, but lacks the finesse and and flavors of the pre-COVID menu. Still, very good.

I’m a big fan of the Blue Spoon! I was surprised about the new shift to small plates. No problem. Small plates are great. I didn’t love all the options, but what I did get, I loved.

Blue Spoon used to be one of our local favorites (together with Eastender which unfortunately suffered a similar fate….) but we hadn’t been in a while (pandemics….) and I was looking forward to rediscovering what I remembered as very thoughtful, fun and flavorful classics (the ragu!….) So, I’m really sad to see what Blue Spoon has now become. Small plates with big prices ($21 for the grandly called “smoked fish platter” which consisted of a tiny piece of smoked salmon, 2 smoked mussels and a few capers….) as an example. Small plates can be exciting and interesting but sadly the ones we tried were flavorless, dull and boring. The mussels came in a broth that could just have been water, the burgers were plain, mushroom crostini that were just that…. Like Eastender under new management, a great disappointment and probably another casualty of the pandemics. Service was great however!

Delightful small neighborhood bistro atop Munjoy Hill on Portland’s eastside. The spring salad with sesame dressing, peas, beans and asparagus was fresh and delicious. I had the homemade fettuccine and clams for my main course. The pasta was so light and it was bathed in a beautiful velvety, buttery sauce. My partner had the Bavette steak which he thoroughly enjoyed. There is a small bar and maybe a dozen tables inside so there is a cozy feel to the place. The service was very friendly and prompt. When we come to Portland we like to try some restaurants outside of the waterfront/ tourist area so this was a nice find for us. It’s a few minutes drive from the waterfront or a 15 minute walk.

Overall, the experience was pleasant, and I have no huge complaints. However, for the prices being charged, I expected a more refined and efficient experience. For instance, I asked what gins the bar stocked, but the waiter could only name two and said he would ask the bartender but never came back with an answer. I asked what cheeses were included in the cheese board, again he didn’t know and said he would ask the chef but never told us. We ordered it anyway and received a selection of 2, not 3 cheeses as stated in the menu. We pointed this out and it was rectified. The salmon was too salty, and while the farro was delicious, there was inexplicably a glob of what I am sure was butter on the side of the plate. I asked ahead of time if they had a children's menu and they responded in the affirmative, yet when my children both chose grilled cheese (out of a total of 4 options), we were told they actually didn’t have that as they had no bread, only hamburger buns. We asked for Shirley temples for the kids and the waiter said it would be made with ginger beer, which I knew they didn’t like, so I requested that they simply be made with grenadine and soda water. But sure enough, they were made with ginger beer and neither of my kids liked them. The meals took a very long time to arrive despite there being very few tables in the restaurant. Lastly, they gave us an incomplete and miscalculated check, which I kindly pointed out as though it doubled my drink order it omitted the entrees (I am an honest person and would never take advantage of being undercharged). So all in all, it was really just “okay,” and I was hoping for so much more based on the menu and website. Oh well…

I have visited Portland over many years, and walked past Blue Spoon, thinking, "I need to try this", as it looked so quaint with the huge windows onto Congress Street, the intimate bar, and the cozy lighting. Finally I made it last night and am so sorry I waited as long as I did. The service was 5 Star, the food carefully prepared and presented, the quality superb, and with only 7 tables and a half dozen stools at the bar, it had the feel of an inn from long ago. I recommend it and will most definitely go back!

Food was just okay - leek appetizer was limp and over sauced, and burger was ordinary. Salmon dinner was simple as promised, but rather tasteless. Prices too high for mediocre food. Lovely, small, cozy place, but would not go again.

The blue spoon is a wonderful neighborhood bistro. Its intimate setting is cozy and inviting. The menu has good variety, with mini appetizers and small plates as well as a choice of 6 to 8 entrées, and typically a selection of three desserts. I would definitely recommend reservations, as I guess the seating to be for about 40.

This is my second visit at the Blue Spoon. I love everything, service, atmosphere and the food. This time I order the wrong entree though. I had the eggplant gnocchi ( I think that’s what it’s called ) It tasted like raw dough with a thin piece of eggplant wrapped around the dough. It was I think $29.00, too expensive l believe for what l got. didn’t want to play it safe this time so l decided to try something new. Even though l didn’t enjoy the entree I’ll be back to your restaurant. My husband selection was delicious he had the a salmon and it was cooked perfectly better than l can do.

My out-of-state friend and I had a fabulous meal at this cozy Munjoy Hill eatery this weekend. Blue Spoon features a wide array of unusual appetizers and wonderful salads, entrees, and specials. From start (charred carrots with feta and red onion plus a generous seafood charcuterie) to finish (chocolate pots-de-créme and beignets with lemon curd), we were happy, happy, happy! Mary

Beautiful presentation, excellent produce, lovely service. The ricotta “gnocchi” I ordered, however, was a disappointment. It would have been more accurately described as manicotti, with an thin slice of eggplant standing in for the pasta manicotti shell. It was still tasty, nonetheless.
