About Permanently Closed - Blue Ginger

And lastly, there are three private dining rooms for larger groups or functions wanting to be enjoyed away from the crowd.
"Blue Ginger is unusual, not only because of the food or the room, but because it's a neighborhood restaurant of a type not found too often in the Boston area...those of us who live farther away will just have to travel now that the secret is out." --The Boston Globe

Blue Ginger - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
How often do you book a renowned restaurant only yo have it come up short? Well, that wasn't the case at Blue Ginger.
Everything was perfect. Reservation was in order, seated right away. Water, bread, smile from busboy, quickly followed by the server to take a drink order and explain the "signature" dishes. Food was fabulous.. a great Tuna poke, very good soft shell crabs, and the Butterfish was outstanding. The open kitchen showed a very hard working, no nonsense crew. Timing of food to the table was excellent.
Pricey, so not for evryday, but certainly a great spot to take out of town guests or celebrate a special occaision.
Delicious as always. Great to sit outside. My husband got the steak, which was good but not as amazing as other dishes we have had there in the past- but still yummy. The scallops were fantastic too, as were the shiitake springroll appetizer. Less impressed with the calamari appetizer - it was ok. No bread basket, which was a first!
Drinks were excellent, wine too. Fantastic kids menu- and we love that we can have a fantastic dining experience in a kid friendly place. Our 3 year old is a big fan too!
Everything was excellent! I brought a good friend there for his birthday. We had fantastic service, wonderful food - sat outside and really enjoyed ourselves. I had eaten there a few years ago and had thought it was good, but this time was memorable. I will keep Blue Ginger on my "to go to" list of restaurants. I look forward to going back.
Our most recent dining experience at Blue Ginger could not have been better. There was an initial issue with an airconditioning unit right above our table. We asked to be moved and there was no hesitation. The wine suggested by our server was perfect for our needs. And the food was wonderful. A great evening!
I made the reservation a month in advance and arrived promptly.
I was led to a table facing the kitchen door. This did not sit well with me. Several other tables were available. I requested and was taken to one of those other tables.
Food and service, otherwise, excellent. Special food request was honored.
We arrived a few minutes early for our reserved time and were seated immediately. The host wished us a Happy Anniversary (I had noted it was our 25th anniversary on the reservation form). Our waitress, Lauren, was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the food and ingredients in each dish we asked her about. The food was very good--a bit more ecclectic than we are used to--but very tasty. We ordered a dessert to share and it came with a little candle and an extra cookie on which "Happy Anniversary" was written in chocolate. Nice touch! Our only issue was that it took about 35-40 minutes after I had my appetizer for our entrees to arrive. My husband did not have an appetizer, as none of them appealed to him, and was very hungry.
Waiter and waitress was very good. Nice reception area and people. Understanding that I was 15 min late on reservation. Nice birthday cookie.... interesting menu, lamb done to perfection, fish very good, somehow wanted more dessert choices, but always, always interesting. V. good wine. Steep price for three people (about 100. each) but a good foodie experience.
Four of us had appetizers, entrees, and desserts that were creative and delicious as well as fresh. Our server was friendly, pleasant, professional, alert, and knowledgeable. She was there when we needed her but did not hover or rush us. She quietly presented the birthday boy's dessert with a candle in it after being told only casually an hour and a half earlier about the occasion. Prices at the restaurant are high, but diners clearly are paying for more than a meal.
In our party of two for lunch, my friend was celebrating her birthday, and at the end, she was given a lovely, complimentary plate of three small cookies with a lighted birthday candle.
But that being said - Before the butterfish came out, I asked that it be cooked through. Our server checked, and the kitchen told her it was ready to come out, and was cooked through. It came almost immediately - lukewarm and not flaky in the center. We sent both dishes back. It came back to our table piping hot and cooked through. Why could it not have come to us this way initially?
We had the only item on the lunch menu that interested us. I would not go back to try anything else, nor would I take anyone else there for a special occasion.
Blue Ginger was really good. Had a wonderful time. Food was great. Very reasonably priced for the type of food. Though, I wouldn't say the place is good for kids, they were extremely accommodating when I brought my 16 month old. Great service, knowledgeable waitress, great food. Wellesley is also a great place to walk around afterwards.
The food as always was outstanding. We were celebrating a special occasion and when we arrived the staff made us feel quite welcome. At times however during the meal we felt a bit rushed to move onto the next course. In a restaurant of this caliber guests should feel unrushed and unhurried.
The Blue Ginger of its heyday 10 years ago is no more; the current restaurant served us overly coarse fare. The rice in my wife's peppercorn lobster was actually crunchy, it was so underdone! Rice! Of all things in an east-west fusion place to do wrong! The cooking is coarse and sloppy. Ming - oh where art thou?
THE GOOD: GREAT FOOD
THE BAD: THE SERVICE - DIDN'T ASK WATER PREFERENCE; ASKED WAITRESS FOR FAVORITES (PLURAL) SHE RECO'D 1 APPETIZER; WAITRESS OVERALL ATTITUDE & KNOWLEDGE OF THE RESTAURANT POOR
THE UGLY: RUSHED. SPENT $225 FOR 2 PEOPLE AND WERE IN AND OUT IN 45 MINS. WAITRESS PUSHED US TO ORDER, WAS VISIBLY IRRITATED WHEN WE ORDERED APPS FIRST (SPOKE TO HER MANAGER) AND WAITED ON ENTREE. AND THEN THE ENTREES (BUTTERFISH- UNDERSIZED, & LOBSTER - EXCELLENT) CAME OUT ~7 MINS AFTER ORDERING. @ 645 RESTAURANT WAS 50% FULL, & STILL 50% FULL WHEN WE LEFT. WHY THE RUSH? BLUE GINGER FAST FOOD? CHEF MING - YOUR BRAND IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE PEOPLE AND RESTAURANTS REPRESENTING IT. YOUR STAFF & BLUE GINGER FAILED YOU LAST EVENING.
This was our first visit to Blue Ginger in celebration of my wife's birthday. She had wanted to visit Blue Ginger for several years and was delighted to celebrate her birthday enjoying the superb food, excellent service, and special birthday cookie at the end of the meal. We look forward to returning soon.
A long-planned visit to Blue Ginger came with high expections, but we were sorely disappointed by the below average food. The service and atmosphere was good, but save your money and go to East or West restaurant down the street--it will taste better and be better value. I had the miso ramen but it had neither; the non-ramen noodles were thick and undercooked; the broth was sweet when it should have been salty; the miso was very hard to find. My dining partner had the Indonesian curry, which was also difficult to identify; the "house" curry paste was dry and full of raw ginger; the non-Shanghai noodles may have been Italian pasta. Both meals were a struggle to finish. As the song goes, "Don't believe the hype".
The food was good but the service was very slow. We finished our lunch and then had to wait for quite a long time to get the check. Our waitress stopped by once early on to see if our food was ok, then never came back. It felt like we became unimportant. We finally had to ask the water server to see if we could get our check. The food was good but the experience was frustrating and doesn't encourage a return visit.
The Blue Ginger was excellent from the cocktails to the dessert. We had the Blue Ginger signature dishes, the Garlic Pepper Lobster and the Butter fish, they both were great but the lobster was outstanding! Very generous portion I might add. Also highly recommend the muscles. We went on a Sunday and it was perfect, busy but not packed, we got great attention and service. Cant wait to go again.
Lunch menu is very limited and not too enticing for a wide population. We would not return for lunch, but continue to consider for dinner, when a more acceptable menu variety is available. If one is on a tight time span for lunch, this may not be conducive to enjoying the meal, as the meals do not come within a reasonable time after ordering.
