Blue Duck Tavern, a contemporary neighborhood restaurant, invites its guests to gather and celebrate in good taste with a menu focusing on the freshest ingredients available from local purveyors and artisans. The menu notes every farm where the main ingredient for the dish was raised before its journey to the table. Dishes are genuine, time-honored and traditional -- slow roasting in wood embers, braising, preserving and smoking techniques bring the true flavors of America's great, simple and wholesome foods to the Blue Duck Tavern.

The restaurant has an elegant residential feel through the open staff pantry and kitchen, wood-burning oven and the showpiece Molteni range.

*Please note that for diners bringing in wine, a $35 corkage fee (per 750 ml bottle of wine), with a limit of two bottles, will be charged.

My wife and I went to Blue Duck Tavern to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I had high expectations because of its reputation. Everything about it was better than expected. The food, drinks, service were all excellent. Even the furniture was nicely designed. I’d definitely go again.

Duck with shaved fennel, quince and kumquat and Gouda grits. Very tasty! Bone marrow was superb! The smoked vanilla ice cream and duck fat caramel sauce with the chocolate cake was perfect!

Had been before for brunch and loved it - but upon going back this time it was a complete disappointment. My partner’s meal was undercooked, our server forgot about us, and never came back after the main course. After he passed us by several times and served every other table repeatedly, we gave up and left. Expected better.

As always, this 1 Michelin star gem delivered once again. I’ve been to several 1 star restaurants across the country and the Blue Duck blows them out of the water, and even holds their own against some 2 star places. Love it here...

Spectacular food. Awful service - staring with no receptionist at the entry way, had to search to find her; unwelcoming attitude; had to negotiate to get a quiet table - most were empty - even though the request was in my Opentable reservation; waiter was constantly distracted and inattentive (example, he described the fruit platter as having orange, melon and mixed berries - he brought to the table a plate which only contained berries; failed to pace the meal - brought my guest’s main course 5 minutes before he brought mine).

The food was outstanding as always. The menu has removed some of my favorite dishes like the waffle and biscuits and gravy. The bigger issue is that I was very disappointed by my waiter. I ordered and never saw him again... I was never asked how my food was, never got any refills to my beverages, never was brought a check. He totally disappeared. Thankfully someone else was kind enough to bring my check, when asked after being finished 20 minutes, at breakfast. Poor waiter service unfortunately seems to be a pattern here for the past few months.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but everything about Blue Duck seemed manipulated to bump up the check. I know it is a business, and they can charge what they like, but when you are offering entrees in the high 30's and above, to not include any side dishes on the plate and then to upsell me on veggies that are priced at 20 bucks or so seems a bit much. (Its the old "steak house" game which I've always found annoying) Encouraging me to have a glass of grappa with my espresso is fine, but you should mention that it is priced at 22 dollars. Of course this just puts the check in the zone of other top tables in DC -- figure 100 to 125 for an appetizer, main plate and side, with coffee (no desert, no beverage) -- so is it worth it? Well the food is good. But its not as good as places like Marcel or Metier. A shaved Brussels sprouts salad was interesting, but dry and need more dressing. The duck confit was beautifully cooked and had deep flavor, but a bit too lightly sauced for my tasted. The menu is ultimately not that interesting. Very conventional American fare without much of twist. The server was efficient but didn't add much to the experience. If a business colleague suggests it and is picking up the tab, by all means go. Otherwise, I'd probably look elsewhere.

Great service. We went to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday and he got a menu with a happy birthday message on it. He’s also treated with a delicious scoop of ice cream with candle on it. Small touches but gave us a good impression.

Our entrees are fantastic. The duck breast was perfectly cooked and tasted rich and fresh. I had pheasant fricassee and the pheasant liver was absolutely delicious.

We didn’t really like the squash soup and the smoked oysters however. I think it’s over seasoned and therefore I couldn’t really taste the sweetness of the squash nor the oysters. I do enjoy the foie grad mousse very much.

We’ve always enjoyed celebrating special occasions at Blue Duck. Tuesday luncheon however was a great disappointment in the food which was the squash soup, vegetable pot pie and salad with chicken. The ingredients were fresh and beautifully presented. I left half of each of my orders. The service was professional, patient and friendly but slow during the meal. The interior design is all hard surfaces so it’s noisy.

Unfortunately, it definitely wasn’t a Michelin Star experience. The reason why we choose this place was the duck confit and waffle dish that they have on the menu online but we were informed that they’ve been out for the past 4 months. The food was hit or miss. The pancakes and bone marrow were amazing, however the short rib hash was ok, and the chia pudding was absolutely tasteless. I got yogurt instead which was ok as well.
Service was efficient. Definitely not worth the price and the Michelin star in my opinion:(

I've been here twice, both times for weekend brunch. Very delicious and unique food, lives up to its 1 Michelin star (price-wise too: prepare to spend a little!). My fiancee and I got the Chesapeake Benedict, BDT Brunch Burger, and Hazelnut Mousse both times -- so yummy!

However, I was disappointed with the service the second time I visited. It wasn't particularly busy, but our server barely checked on us -- I had an empty water glass a couple times and had to drink from my fiancee's glass before flagging down someone else for refills.
We also waited almost 20 minutes for our server to pick up our card/check; since we were in a rush to see a matinee show at the Kennedy Center, again we had to flag down someone else to get our payment processed so that we could head out in time.
Finally, I got my leftover fries packed to go and wanted to keep the yummy aioli sauce that comes with them; but instead of putting the sauce in a small to-go cup or just off to the side in the to-go box per usual practice, he put it on the fries directly and thus made them super soggy by the time I ate them later in the evening.

Additionally, the food took quite a while to come out during my second visit, but again it wasn't super packed. I know this is a kitchen issue and not a server issue, but we didn't even get a quick update to say "your food will be out in a couple minutes" or anything like that. Incidental kitchen delays are totally understandable and not a big deal, just briefly acknowledge/explain them to guests.

Don't get me wrong, BDT is a delicious gem that's definitely worth checking out at least once; I'd consider coming back on another occasion too. Hopefully the service issue was just a one-time hiccup; but for a Michelin-starred restaurant, service should be consistently top-notch.

Had dinner here (one of our remaining DC bucket list choices) the night after Thanksgiving. We got there early and had delicious handcrafted cocktails at the bar before dining. Very creative menu with lots of choices. Standout dishes for me were the bone marrow app and the steak along with AMAZING pureed potatoes. There was only one item in the entire meal that was a fail (one of the sorbet flavors at dessert) and they actually took it off the bill (I did not request them to!) ...

As great as the food was ... and it was GREAT ... the standout aspect of the evening for us was the absolutely outstanding service! The two that stood out was the hostess, Justiria (I hope I spelled her name right!) and our server Adrienne. They were both incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and just all-out terrific. You could tell they really loved what they did and had sincere enthusiasm for the product. They were warm and attentive without being smothering or obsequious :) And I had thought Adrienne was the somm, she was so knowledgable about the wine! Our bartender, whose name I didn't catch, was also excellent!

At a restaurant as highly regarded as Blue Duck, you may expect professional service but I almost felt like I was at one of those high-end resorts where you get a dedicated person assigned to you (not that I've ever been at one of those but I read about them in travel mags LOL). There are several GREAT restaurants here in DC and we're trying to get to all of them at least once, but this will always stand out in my memory because of the people there as well as the excellent food and that's a good thing.

What a great place! We arrived almost thirty minutes early but since it was a later reservation and there weren’t a lot of people dining, they seated us immediately. We had a great talk about food with the assistant general manager, Nick. He explained us to what the Blue Duck Tavern was all about. I have to say that the dim lighting, hand crafted wood chairs, and the hearty food I had just eaten made me feel as if I were dining at a roadside tavern circa 1800.

Rabbit fricassee is what I came for but I was informed it had just been recently taken off the menu. Nick suggested the pheasant which was the rabbits replacement on the menu. I went with that as it had many of the qualities that made me desire the rabbit in the first place. After the first bite I was disappointed no more. It was the tenderest pheasant I had ever eaten. It just melted in my mouth. It was so good I had to request some bread to sop up the rest. Can you do that at a Michelin restaurant? I wasn’t leaving a drop behind regardless!

Awesome staff! Great food! Unique atmosphere! The star is well deserved!
