About Blue Duck Tavern

Blue Duck Tavern, a contemporary neighborhood restaurant, invites its guests to gather and celebrate in good taste with a menu focusing on the freshest ingredients available from local purveyors and artisans. The menu notes every farm where the main ingredient for the dish was raised before its journey to the table. Dishes are genuine, time-honored and traditional -- slow roasting in wood embers, braising, preserving and smoking techniques bring the true flavors of America's great, simple and wholesome foods to the Blue Duck Tavern.

The restaurant has an elegant residential feel through the open staff pantry and kitchen, wood-burning oven and the showpiece Molteni range.

*Please note that for diners bringing in wine, a $35 corkage fee (per 750 ml bottle of wine), with a limit of two bottles, will be charged.

We came to Blue Duck for an early celebration for my daughter's 15th birthday. They rolled out the red carpet for her from the moment she sat down until the final presentation of her dessert. Most of the dishes are classics with excellently sourced ingredients that are flavorful and executed perfectly. My duck breast with confit leg was delicious as was the squid ink pasta with scallops.

Expect nothing less than Michelin service with thorough knowledge of the menu, attentiveness to the table, and timeliness of courses. Pricing was anticipated as our three courses with drinks was $85/person before tip.

Excellent meal with truly lovely tasting dishes. Interesting menu in a casual dining setting. Overall larger portions than used to at a Michelin Star restaurant that in all honesty were a little too large but I guess in the USA everything is just bigger. Service was quite attentive but we were surprised to be presented with the check before being asked about tea coffee, brandy etc. which we did go on to order. Tea was an experience and my comment would be that serving loose tea in a teapot is great but beware of brewing times - the tea came to the table a little late and was already stronger that I like so I needed to have extra water - heat under the tea pot is a bit gimmicky and really not necessary. Overall this is an expensive meal needing to be saved for special occasions but the food was equisite and ultimately that is what a Michelin Star is all about. I would definitely recommend

We had a wonderful dinner at BDT. It was our 50th anniversary dinner and our server Louis was very attentive and made us feel special. We were treated to a complimentary glass of champagne which was a wonderful way to end the dinner. The braised ribs were the best I have ever had. Every aspect of our dinner was exceptional.

This is a lovely restaurant. The brunch menu had great offerings. Try the Cafe Park for a cold refreshing espresso drink. The brunch burger had me on a food high. I'll be returning to try dinner.

We went (only restaurant open late near the Kennedy Center) for after-theater birthday dinner
(they took my reservation for 10:30, but close their kitchen at 10:30, so you must get there before 10:30). Elegant setting, excellent ambiance, quiet, glass-enclosed private dining rooms. Succulent duck confit and exceptionally moist, tender and tasty trout. Expensive but delicious mushrooms and squash on the side. Superb service. All ala carte and very expensive. Indicated in making our reservation that it was a birthday dinner, but only acknowledgement was "happy birthday" atop the menu (something like a birthday cookie would have topped it off nicely).

Blue Duck Tavern was suggested to me by a friend for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. So glad they had reservations open!! As recommended was started with the Bone Marrow, it was to die for! Everything else from there was just as delicious. We ended up with 3 desserts, don't ask me where we found the room. Our waiter was extremely personable as was every other staff member we encountered. Can't wait to go back to see what their next seasonal menu has to offer

Shankar is the reason to come here. The food is fabulous. The kitchen hums and is fun to watch. The rooms are lovely.Every level of staff is on point. I would come back for all of that. But our absolute favorite part was our wonderful waiter, Shankar. Truly a delight. We will return.

The service was on point throughout the meal. The marrow (appetizer), duck (entree), and brussels sprouts (side) were outstanding. The cold foie gras (appetizer) would be better served seared. The beef rib entree was very good but not amazing. Specifying temperature preparations would help. Enjoyed a wonderful Jayson wine but noted the markup is significantly higher than a year ago. Overall a great experience.

Was in DC to participate in the reading of the names at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at a VERY early hour. BDT was recommended by a friend - NOT disappointed. Had the short rib hash, sister had the breakfast sandwich. Everything was well seasoned and delicious. I have GOT to learn how to make that collard green marmalade!!

I recommended BDT and bragged about how good the food is at this restaurant. I have been to this restaurant many times and I will have to say I will not be back. Our server was like a piece of plain paper...no personality. I should’ve known something was wrong with her service because when I asked if there were any specials tonight she replied with an attitude I would’ve started with the specials if there were any. WOW! We had the Baby Gem salad and it had no flavor but heat. We brought this to our servers attention and she responded clearly it had flavor since it had heat. I told her there is a difference between flavor and heat.

While my table mates knew what they wanted the server made it painfully obvious that if you come to the Blue Duck Tavern you must have the Duck. Reluctantly I gave in and ordered the Duck. The Duck was extremely salty and tuff. Two of us ordered the Duck and thought the same thing. The other person ordered the beef short rib which was good but could’ve been more tender. The sides which were the beet gnocchi, butternut squash mash and Brussels sprouts were excellent. If you want to go somewhere and have only sides then this restaurant is the place for you. By the way, I only ate one slice of my duck and my friend that had the beef also had a slice. My entire duck dish was there and the waiter cane back once to check on us before we tasted the duck. When she came to collect the dishes she asked do you want to take this to go and we all replied no. She was quick to resolve the salad issue but said nothing about the full pan of duck. It was not good at all.

I was looking forward to this meal all day and hate it turned out the way it did. Maybe if I hadn’t bragged about it beforehand it might’ve turned out better.

I celebrated my birthday at BDT. The desert and birthday reception were great. Some guests enjoyed their meals while others found theirs underwhelming e.g. the quail. Our waiter and other staff were great, bringing delicious a cheese spread while we waited for the main course. The private dining manager, however, seemed pretty unresponsive and less friendly, which made the initial inquiry process a bit difficult. Overall, a decent experience!

Overall the experience was excellent. There was a slight hiccup over an order of eggs over easy which came out pretty well done and fried. I was a bit surprised over such error for a basic dish, however wait staff immediately remedy even though I told them not to worry about it and gave me a much better prepare egg afterwards. The rest of the food was exquisite- everything was quite tasty. I loved the Banana Parfait for dessert.

Took my girlfriend for our 2yr anniversary. Service was excellent. Very cool overall experience. I got a steak, she got duck and we shared their “fries” and mushrooms. Fries were only thing that fell below expectations. Our server was great. Food was really good but nothing on the menu was terribly unique or creative.

From the moment we arrived until the moment we laughed, the service was impeccable. Valet parking, seating at precisely the time of our reservation, and an outstanding waiter made for a very enjoyable evening. Not to mention incredible food! Pork belly appetizer was especially delicious. Our entrées were equally as good and from what we saw around us, I don’t think you could go wrong with anything on the menu.

Excellent food and service. From the moment my husband and I walked in we were greeted by a friendly hostess and then our server took very good care of us during our entire brunch. The service was awfful and the overall experience was disappointing. I booked this restaurant for my husbands birthday and called ahead to reserve the special duck dish they gave on a limited basis. The duck is to be served table side and the chef is to explain the overall preparation as part of the experience. My husbands birthday was not acknowledged. In addition the duck was brought to us and placed on the table - the chef never came by. And to add insult to injury, they cleared the table before we were done eating and also to be k my unfinished wine. We felt hurried the entire time we were in the restaurant. I am not certain why the waiter was so rude! I will not return after spending $200 on a meal where it was terribly rushed and uncomfortable.

I picked this restaurant because it had a Michelin Star. I guess my expectations were too high. It was far too overpriced for the quality of the food or experience. The most detrimental part of my visit was the difficulty I had understanding my waiter, who's first language was obviously not English. I was disappointed to say the least.

This restaurant was chosen by us because of its great reviews. It did not disappoint. The staff was energetic, friendly, and informative. Our waiter, Tibor - did an excellent job explaining the menu. We had cocktails, followed by appetizers of bone marrow, raw oysters, and roasted pork belly. This was followed by dishes of trout, butchers cut of fillet, and duck breast for a party of four. Sides were served family style and consisted of fried potatoes, mushrooms, and Brussels sprouts. All were excellent and cooked appropriately. Dessert consisted of one order of apple pie and ice cream, which we felt was large enough to serve a party of four after such a large meal. Overall, expect a price of $100.00 per person + tip. A great place that tends to get busy late (> 8 pm).

The Blue Duck Tavern is a handsome establishment with impeccably presented and delectable food. But the portions are relatively small and less than one would expect in relation to the price. Moreover, some of the presentations overemphasize the visual art in the arrangement of the food. They should find ways to marry the art of the food to heartier portions.
