What Insiders Are Saying
Blue Door Kitchen is a nice but not too fancy Gold Coast restaurant in an old mansion. The courtyard patio is beautiful for when it's nice outside.
Sat outside and the smoke from the cigar shop was awful. Great ambiance outside but couldn't get past the smell.
Best fried chicken I’ve ever had. And loved the Salmon. We sat outside and it was perfect.
Delicious food and great service. Beautiful patio.
Love the fried chicken! High Tea cocktail is delicious!
Favorite spot for brunch! Doesn’t disappoint!
Very rude manager. Misled us to think our reservation was for outside when they don't take reservations for the patio.
Beautiful inside and out-garden is amazing. Ian was a super host! Have to try the best fried chicken ever!
Love the patio! Great service and what a treat to meet the Chef
We really enjoyed Blue Door Kitchen & Garden. We had dinner in the garden and it was delightful with attentive service and great food. It has a little French garden vibe. Very comfortable. I plan to return!
It was so nice to sit outside! One reason I chose the restaurant was the garden ✅ and the menu!
The menu online was quite different though to the actual menu and there was very little options for vegetarians left! I pointed it out to the waiter and they were very aware that the online menu needed updating!
How hard can it be?
I still had a nice evening because I had nice company and the weather was great!
Always an excellent place for good food and good conversation!
The food was spectacular. The service was a little slow and a few things were delayed getting to the table (pre-dinner cocktails and the wrong dessert initially). However, the pleasant waitstaff and the ambience made up for this. Would definitely recommend.
Between the many pleasurable visits we have made to both Table 52 and Blue Door over the past many years, this was a singularly disappointing visit, but only on the service level. The food was its usual terrific self, but the service was exceptionally poor. No attention from the waitperson after the first course was served, had to wait more than 40 minutes for the entree after the salad plates were cleared, while both tables on either side, who ordered after us, were served and completed their meals and left before we even got our entrees. Very disappointing, but not enough to prevent us from returning, as we know this was an abberation.
The food is fine but not worth the price, we had to get up and get many things ourself because we barely had any service. Food needs salt!
The Rose made for Blue Door is great with the Chicken and Dumpling soup, the date/orange salad, and the shrimp and grits. A few more dumplings in the soup would have made it perfect. We enjoyed our meal very much and only regretted that the weather stopped our sitting in the patio.
Service was excellent and the food was tremendous. The manager came by to ensure that we were satisfied with everything. Can't wait to go back again. I had the chicken and waffle and my guest had the breakfast omelette. Our waitress was attentive and we never left with an empty cup of coffee. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and the atmosphere is inviting. I rate it #1.
Dumbfounded that a celebrity chef with such quality food offerings would allow for an amateurish staff. They clearly forgot our dinner order, which took nearly an hour to arrive. Then they forgot my wife's dessert order, which was compounded by the fact that they dropped off my dessert while we waited another 20 minutes for hers to arrive. Being late with the food is bad enough staggering their deliver only makes the problem worse.
I'll go back because I'm a fan of Art Smith. But two strike and you're out. I can always get my fix at Art Smith's Homecomin' in Florida, which should be giving customer service lessons here.
We had a very enjoyable experience. The duck was great! I’ve had the fried chicken every time I’ve been previously but decided to changed up. I was not disappointed
Very short staffed at the bar and in the kitchen. Food quality inconsistent, some great (chicken), some just ok (crawfish mac n' cheese), some not hot enough (scallops). Food had been sitting for awhile before delivering to table. In addition, they were already out of sea bass, pork belly and one of the desserts we ordered and our reservation was at 7pm (early to be running out of food). Not very attentive or apologetic. Would not return.
Great food and service in a beautiful country French setting. Makes you feel like your truly on vacation, right in the city.
Very nice romantic place to dine. The outside patio is outstanding, feels like you are in some quite local restaurant somewhere in Europe.
This place was once one of my favorites in Chicago. Service was poor, we were seated in the outdoor space, the chair cushions were very badly worn. I experienced severe GI upset a few hours after eating the crab cakes/ I am a physician so I do suspect a bacterial issue. Waitress was pleasant but scarce. Truly a disappointing experience compared to the what we had experienced in the past. It's a shame as we live in the neighborhood and would love to see local businesses thrive. Wondering when was the last time Mr Smith actually visited his restaurant.
Outstanding food in a beautiful restaurant. The food was all seasonal, fresh, and great taste. Will come back often.
This was our third visit to The Blue Door. We took really good friends, so there were 4 of us. Sadly, our experience did not match the first two. Our server was very nice, but she was also the bartender for the entire restaurant! Attention, to us came after she fulfilled the orders from other servers and patrons at the bar. It was so SLOOOOWWWW. We were there for 3 hours. A couple other people made deliveries of appi/food, but dashed away so fast, that was no chance for "hey I need..." Management should never assign the bartender to a table(s). It was not a slow night where she needed something to do. She can help deliver hot food timely, when she has time, but who am I to tell you how to run a restaurant well? Our food was okay. Not phenomenal like before. I had the (sea) bass; seemed greasy. My husband had scallops; okay nothing spectacular. My friends' hubs had the duck, he said it was good, but tough. And his wife had a big salad with salmon.
Only negative was the portion size of my first cocktail, it was a delicious mint cocktail, but so small for the price they are charging! And they only had two desserts at the time because they said they were updating their dessert menus. Other than that, food and ambiance was excellent! Their patio is great.
Amazing staff, well crafted menu, and great date environment.
Always love coming to the Blue Door Restaurant Family! This was my first time for dinner and my first time at Blue Door Kitchen & Garden. Service was great! Food was hot! Can’t complain about a single thing.
Not a fan
Was enticed to try from their yelp and open table menu and the “garden to glass” cocktail concept. I was disappointed that most of the cocktails listed online were no longer available. As our server said they were “from a really old menu”. Update your social media!! Now on to the food. I know Art Smith is know for artery clogging food but the whole menu was unhealthy and heavy. The restaurant is cute but when you walk in it smells like a chicken fryer. Not appealing. Got the trout and it was thin and over cooked. Overall not good at all
Always enjoy going to this restaurant. Food is great, cozy environment. Cushions could be replaced on chairs, but they had a pillow which helped
Great food, value and service. Wil visit again in the future. Highly recommended.
Our party of 6 loved the place. Great decor and even better food and drinks@ The service from Allison was top notch.
Food great but service wasn’t good. We were forgotten about for long periods of time and the food took forever to arrive.
Staff were perfectly nice, but something wasn’t working.
The hostess was quite rude. The server took forever to take our order and get us our check. The food was fine, the restaurant is adorable.
Blue Door has always been one of my favorite places to eat in the neighborhood. They recently updated their menu and it’s not great. For example, a majority of the items now have peas in them...even the Mac n cheese. Additionally, our server was not familiar with how things were prepared so he had to keep going to the kitchen to inquire.
The rudest hostess ive encountered at a fine dining restaurant. Untrained and inattentive service. Waiter friendly but did not come to take order for a long time and did not check on us after we received our orders. Busboy took away food before we had finished. Setting is pretty and china adds elegance but overall loud. Requested outdoor seating in advance with reservation since this was the main draw on a nice day but were put upstairs due to a light and brief rain and were not offered to relocate to the outdoors. Hostess insisted that the garden was not being used due to the rain but was packed when we left. Food was good but menu is limited. Understand that the sister restaurant is very good. Will not return.
This is a gem restaurant. It has a cozy feeling. We ate indoors but we saw the p
Outdoor patio was very popular. Nice selection of entrees and food was excellent.
They were maybe having off day.
The garden and interior are well appointed, casually sophisticated and charming. The food was excellent and the staff friendly. The out door dining was so pleasant you felt like you were in France.
Excellent as always!
Was so excited to come here, but did not have a great experience. I ordered the lunch combo of soup and salad. First the waiter brought the wrong soup. He didn't come back to check on us at all, so I had to catch the attention of the hostess to grab him even though it wasn't busy. Still no problem. He brought me the new soup after I had finished my salad and the person I was with changed her whole meal. It was the chicken and dumpling soup with no dumplings and just a few carrots and chicken. I asked him if he brought the right soup because there were no dumplings. He said, oh well there should be and walked away. Kind of weird. Then we went to pay - split the bill evenly. He charged my card twice and hers not at all. Took our bills back and returned the bills back to us without my friend's credit card. He claimed he gave it to her and she had to say several times that he didn't. Finally went back to the register and found it over there.
Was just really one thing after another with no apologies or make goods. Felt like an overpriced experience despite it being a cute restaurant. Likely won't return.
