Burgers were extremely salty-two people at our table couldn't finish them. Fried chicken was fantastic and very generous serving. Server forgot after being reminded twice that it was the birthday for my friend and we needed to get a dessert which we asked for to go. He had plates and napkins brought out, and the dessert brought to the table.
I will go back just for the fried chicken, and adorable ambiance. But being aware of friendly but non-responsive and incompetent service (noticed a few other diners had similar experiences while we were there).
the butternut squash soup was so delicious my friend and i both said, "can we eat here every night?" the main course were just as delicious. I had the special fish. Waiter could have been a little more knowledgeable but gave very good service.
Nice restaurant located in the Gold Coast. Excellent food, healthy ingredients!
I love The Blue Door and have been going there since it was Table 52. The food is fabulous and service is usually top notch however on Super Bowl Sunday it was sub par. The server did not remember to bring me coffee, then did not bring the cream, I asked for butter and had to ask twice. Our empty plates were not cleared away until we asked. It seemed the restaurant was short staffed. The table next to us waited 45 minutes for a to go order of bengneits (sp?) to then be told they were sold out. I will be back because this is not the usual service I have experienced for years at The Blue Door. Thank you.
Nice to be back at this Art Smith owned restaurant, have not been there since it became Blue Door Kitchen. It was a warm and inviting spot on a snowy day. The decor was great as was our waiter. When our waffles were not hot he immediately got us more waffles and comped our deviled eggs. Can I just say, the devil eggs with sauteed black-eyed peas were yummy with a great added crunch. Looking forward to going back and seeing that beautiful centerpiece painting on the back wall.
Service was so slow as we sat there for a good two hours just for lunch. Food was either over seasoned, too dry, or just okay.
Look forward to going back again
Blue Door is so quaint! It feels like you are in France in the countryside. Food and service is excellent. We had the butternut squash soup, chicken, braised meat, burger and 2 desserts. Everything was delicious! It can be chilly inside so be sure to dress warm.
Early Sunday evening dinner during Restaurant Week. Liked the option to order from the main menu or the special prix fixe menu. Ordered from the prix fixe menu. Loved the food; loved the service. Cozy atmosphere lends itself to quiet conversation. The brussels & kale salad was a delicious surprise with no bitterness whatsoever. Beef short rib and fried chicken were outstanding.
Service was amazing! Food was fantastic! It was a perfect cozy Sunday brunch.
The brunch menu is very eclectic. The ambience & service is excellent !
Unfortunately the food was just average. Temperatures were off, items were dry, bland flavors. Perogies & Hummingbird cake were really good though. Drinks were also very good. The atmosphere, staff & service were outstanding.
Great experience with amazing staff
Blue Door Farmstand is a great place for a laid back date night!
Seriously, one of the best meals I've ever had! The service was great too!
Blue Door is such a lovely experience. The decor is humble yet elegant, the service is incredibly efficient yet you never feel rushed, and the food always delectable. It is equally suited for a weeknight dinner or a well executed special occasion! We enjoyed the fried chicken, the shrimp & grits, and the butternut squash soup. All absolutely delicious.
After making a mistake in our order, the waiter did not do much to make it right.
Great way to spend Sunday for brunch. Food was good, coffee was great and Rhubarb Mimosa was great
Service was somewhat inattentive. A better explanation of the menu would have helped. Portions were gigantic and must have been meant for sharing. Food was, essentially, garden variety comfort food. Solid if not particularly notable.
Have been to the restaurant several times. However something definitely has changed. Should have known how the evening would go when showed up and no valet. Went in to ask and was told they would be right there. Waited 5 minutes and then just found a place to park. Was seated at a table that is crammed into a very small space and to which the waiter and patrons had to brush up against those seated to get by. This was for a reservation made 6 weeks in advance. The food is pricey enough they should not be trying to use every square inch for service. The table was also located near a supply closet so people were in an out continuously on the second floor. The service was atrocious we literally waited for everything 5 people for dinner and the whole affair took 1:45. There was no desert as it was already 1:45 and after waiting 10 minutes for the waiter to come back to take the order my guests and myself decided it was enough. Also the foot was below par almost everything is underseasoned and the portions were unequal. Two of us ordered the fried chicken and one plate came with an abundance of mashed potato the other almost none. Would have complained but waiter never came back for 25 minutes. Drinks were never refreshed or an offer made. Its is unfortunate this had been one of our favorite restaurants. We won't be back.
The food was inventive and delicious! The place was full on a Friday night but the service was still top-notch! We will definitely be back for dinner and the patio when the weather gets warmer.
Overpriced food dishes, good wine
Neighborhood gem with inviting decor and creative menu..
The patio is magic in the summer months.
Had a holiday brunch there and while the meal was delicious, I was disappointed that they hadn’t done any holiday decor at all.....a shame as the overall ambiance and color scheme would have been so conducive to a cozy winter/holiday ambiance.
as always the decor and food blow me away with this place. the music was quite loud when we were there and that was distracting at times but other than that a great time!
$22 for chicken and waffles. The pieces of chicken were small and the crust over-cooked. It was certainly not what I was hoping for. I went with two others. No one felt that their dish was worth splurging on the calories. The shrimp and grits was fine but certainly nothing special. The house made sausage and eggs would have been improved with a high grade commercial sausage.
The food was excellent the service was phenomenal very cozy place , have an outdoor patio in the summer which I have not tried but will this year great spot
The food was definitely good—especially the hummingbird cake. But the service really left something to be desired. More than a couple of times we kept wondering, where is our server? So that was a bummer. But if you are looking to linger over a meal in a very, very cute restaurant, this is the place!
Overall experience was great!
We loved our first time at Blue Door. The deviled eggs of the night were delicious. Two of the couples then split the friend chicken, I had the kale salad and we all had some mac & cheese. It was all fantastic and the perfect amount of food. We will return!
Wonderful holiday dinner with three generations of family before seeing Billy Elliott at the Porchlight Theater. Delicious seasonal cocktails to start. Shared the Brussel Sprout & Kale Salad - fabulous! Went with the House specialties and they did not disappoint: Shrimp & Grits were excellent and the Fried Chicken is some of the best I’ve ever had! Love the accompanying black pepper honey and homemade hot sauce. Beautiful setting for a wonderful meal! We will be back!
Great Fried Chicken!
Loved it! The food was delicious and service perfect. A great date night spot
Nice and cozy inside this time of year ( late December). This is a great neighborhood restaurant, and we have enjoyed dinner here in the past, but this last visit was not as good. I had the special “filet”, but was tough, and more like a top sirloin in texture. My husband’s salmon was not as good as last time we were there. This is a popular place in the summer with their outdoor garden, so maybe we just hit it in the “off season”. Perhaps stay with their very popular fried chicken.
I took my mother to some other “hot spots” in Chicago and by far, this was her favorite. She got the filet special (thought she usually doesn’t eat meat) and I got the fried chicken. Both were the best I ever ate! I still can’t believe how good the fried chicken tasted. Quiet atmosphere and very cozy.
Wonderful spot. Delicious, creative, and comforting fare. Cool decor. Delightful and attentive staff, who were especially kind and accommodating regarding my daughter’s food allergies.
This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend and I have to say I loved it! The atmosphere is gorgeous! It was a Monday morning and when we arrived we were the only ones in the place. Our waitress was very friendly and very helpful. The food was delicious and so flavorful. I had the half Brussels Sprout salad and Butternut Squash soup which the waitress did help me decide on. I wish I wold have gotten her name. Another friend had the same sale and half Rueben she said the bread and cheese was delicious but the corn beef was a bit fatty. That is the only reason I didn’t give 5 stars on food. Another friend had the Buttermilk fried chicken that had a very generous serving with yummy mash potatoes. The staff kept our drinks filled and were so pleasant! I would definitely go back.
We went for brunch and would suggest the Bloody Mary garnish be revisited as it looks incomplete. Our food was not hot, but the server didn’t hesitate to have the kitchen remake the order quickly. All in all it was a nice brunch.
As always, an excellent value and well worth the trip. Great brunch!
The four of us mostly enjoyed our dinner, and would give it a B+. The fried chicken was delicious and the portion was huge--could easily split between two people (we did not, but enjoyed the leftovers.) The kale salad was pretty good, and also very large. Our friend who had the hamburger thought it was good, not great. The pecan pie was wonderful. What really left us cold was the ceviche. Very small, and just not that flavorful. And it came with two crackers. There were four of us. Seemed silly and a little precious. The valet parking is a ripoff. They charged us $24 vs. $15 because we were a minute over 3 hours. One minute. Not a good way to send off your guests. I have been here before for lunch in the beautiful garden and enjoyed that more. Will probably not return for dinner.
