Blue Door Kitchen is a nice but not too fancy Gold Coast restaurant in an old mansion. The courtyard patio is beautiful for when it's nice outside.
the complimentary hummus and cracker were a nice touch.
fried chicken sandwich is something to come back for.
great value for a Art Smith menu.
our waitress did not bring her A game to work this day...more like a B-...will try again
atmosphere is extremely cozy and inviting...too bad the music did not match.
Lovely setting with great staff and wonderful food.
Delightful brunch 😊
Great food and service. Upstairs dining room is very quiet
It was wonderful all around! We felt welcome and relaxed, the food was fantastic, and the overall evening was excellent. We will continue to visit!
Brought us the wrong food! Took over 30 min to correct! They basically ignored us after that! Worst experience I have ever had dining. Was looking forward to it as many said it was a good place! Very sad! On top of all that, the bill was wrong! Just a laughable experience!
This is the third time for me to come to this location, and we still love it. My family loves the chicken and waffles. Only one compliant I wish they had better sauces and less salt on the food. Our server was great !
Superb food and very reasonable wine list. Very lively decor and great wait staff
I will definitely give it another try. My wife was very happy with her trout but my shrimp and grits which is supposedley a signature dish was not as good as others I have jad. The grits were cold the flavors were a little bland and there were ony three wafer thin pieces of andouille. The shrimp was very good and plump though. They can do better. Cool space with good vibe and fun mixed crowd. Wine prices a little high for the small pours.
Disappointing. Loved Table 52 and enjoy Blue Door on Halsted. We may have had an off day but the karma was very negative. Our waitress seemed to dislike her job and despite an early booking and few tables we were not asked for a drink order for a long while. We ordered directly from the bartender who was charming and the only bright spot. Food tasty but sullied by low energy seemingly unhappy staff including hostess who failed to contact the valet and then suggested she has no control as they do what they want (after we waited a long while). Better bet to go to Halsted location although mysteriously they aren’t on Open Table.
Delicious food and adorable interior
3rd visit. Always amazing in past. This time all food was cold. Service was ok
Have been here several times and never disappoints. I wish the founder was there to greet guests butbunderstand schedules are what they are. Ambiance is excellent and prices are very goods still love the fried chicken!
Second time in Chicago and the first place I reserved to eat for the trip. My daughter brought me here in Jan and it was awesome. Perogis were to die for !! Had them at both visits. I had the filet that was cooked perfectly and my 2 daughter’s had the fried chicken and the Salamon- all dishes were simply the best!!!! Definite recommend!!
Went to The Blue Door mid-week for a birthday celebration. I have been there and always enjoyed it but my guests had not been. They were amazed at how delightful the ambiance is and how good the food is. The Blue Door has made two more faithful followers.
Great service. Good food.
our dinning experience was amazing! We were seated on the second floor and it was just delightful!! We will definitely go again.
When we requested a non-alcoholic beer, the server said it was not available, and then offered a light beer (did he know that a light beer has alcohol?). When asked if the chef would create a vegetarian meal (dietary restrictions/food allergy and Friday during Lent) other than the mac n cheese on the menu, the answer was, "no." Two minutes after giving our order, one of us asked to switch our selection. The answer was, "I've already put it in the system." The server did intercept the order, but not happily. Before we even finished dinner, the servers were crashing around getting ready for the next day. Not a very gracious, welcoming environment. Food was sub-par. The décor is beautiful, however.
Everything was very nice. The fish dish was great as well as the chicken. Did not lové thé Mac and cheese. Very heavy.
Lunch at Blue Door is very relaxed and not crowded. Service is therefore attentive and noise level is very low. Food portions are large. Sandwiches are huge. Chicken is always marvelous. Wish we had had room for dessert! Cannot wait to go back when the weather warms up to eat outside!
The food was delicious and the atmosphere is wonderful. My friends and I had a marvelous time there.
Perfect in every way - the food, ambiance, and service was outstanding.
I had been looking forward to eating at Blue Door for quite some time, but was very underwhelmed by the food and the service. There were a couple of extremely loud groups that made dining conversations difficult to hear and the food was bland - not under seasoned, but unseasoned. Service here was probably some of the worst I've experienced in some time.
The food was excellent and waitstaff very friendly and attentive.
I’d eaten at this restaurant before and decided to give it a try again. This time around was extremely disappointing. I ordered the deviled eggs as I had done previously. This time around crispy black eyed peas were added as a garnish. Bad decision chef. The peas were like unpopped kernels in my mouth-difficult to chew and totally devoid of taste. The eggs were not as good as before but could have been salvageable if not for the peas.
How does one destroy organic salmon? One destroys salmon by placing totally unknown accompaniments on the plate and completely destroying the taste of the fish (the very minute cut of fish at that-shame in you chef)! I was totally taken aback by the degradation of taste in less than 3 months.
I must say the two items were removed from my bill without my having to make the request.
Kudos to the waiter Todd!!!!!
Feels like we were at a different restaurant than what some others describe in reviews. Wish we had just gone to one of our tried-and-true usuals. The charges and prices for what it is are super high (yes we go to other nice restaurants), our food was not noteworthy as others are noting . and we also had the hummus charge story that others mention. Super super disappointing for our $275.00.
I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and finally took the chance during my birthday week. This place was everything I'd hoped it would be and more! Delicious Southern cuisine, amazing craft cocktails and caring staff!
Good food, comfortable setting, and friendly service!
The decor is adorable. The hostess was friendly. Our waiter was also friendly, but didn't check back on us enough. Wish there were a few more vegetarian friendly options.
Love the atmosphere at the Blue Door. Cocktails are excellent and the bartender will make what you want based on your preferences. We have only had breakfast so far and both times enjoyed the fried chicken and waffles and the omelette. Nice variety on the menu and the waitstaff is very friendly
went there specifically for the fried chicken which had been rated as some of the best in Chicago and it was delicious. unfortunately, the three other menu items ordered by me and two of my other guests were not as delicious. my duck confit was bland(under seasoned and lacking of some needed sauce) and was reminiscent off reheated Thanksgiving leftover turkey leg. my other guests also commented that their items were only okay. additionally, we had ordered a side dish to share which hadn't come out with the rest of our entrees - it actually arrived AFTER one of my guests was completely finished with his meal.
on the positive side, the hostess was extremely pleasant and helpful, the bartender (Kyle) was knowledgeable and very good, and the manager was also congenial and attentive. the restaurant was nicely decorated and the noise level was conducive for conversation.
overall, everything aside from their notable fried chicken was only fair and a bit of a disappointment.
Food was absolutely fantastic!! We had the fried chicken and the mac and cheese--both were totally worth the calories!! Disappointed that they were limited in their wine choices and the only 'by the glass' Reisling and Pinot were not available. Definitely should also consider domestic beers for those folks who don't like IPAs. My husband asked the server for a beer that wasn't 'wheaty' and that's EXACTLY what he received--WHEATY. He couldn't drink it. Other than that, totally great experience!
We enjoyed our meal. The kale and brussels sprout salad was one of the best I've had, but it was absolutely MASSIVE! Does it really need to be that large?? Topped with a well-prepared organic salmon filet, it was quite delicious. My dinner partners also loved the squash soup and white bean stew. Well-made cocktails as well. The only downside is the front door has no barrier to the outdoors, so the extreme cold came wafting into the small dining room every time the door opened. I'll know next time to dress more warmly.
Went for Valentine's Day. Everything was great. Oscar's service was wonderful. The pierogies were delicious and my petite filet was absolutely fantastic. The drinks were unique and delicious as well.
The food was OK - disappointing compared to what table 52 used to be. The most annoying part was that they serve you a “from the kitchen” hummus appetizer, implying it’s complimentary, as we did not order it and it showed up on our bill.
Let me preface this with, I usually love Blue Door Kitchen. We bring all of our out of town guests here. On this occasion, we chose it for our Valentine’s Day dinner. I love the Hummingbird Cake typically. I was looking forward to it all week. But it was sadly so dry on this occasion. The deviled egg filling was dry as well. I’m hoping this was a one off night for them, but I’m afraid it may be a trend of a slide downward.
Overall it was a nice evening. Nothing spectacular or anything that stands out. Really the only negative was when I looked over and they were cleaning the restaurant. Granted it was towards the end of the night but you usually wait for guests to leave.
Everything I've ever eaten here has been superb, the grits in the shrimp and grits were a bit bland, but still cooked perfectly and delicious. Always get the deviled eggs.
Blue Door was amazing love this spot we came for brunch. I posted a photo on my IG story and got so many inquiries asking where we were. I didn’t want to tell I wanna keep this little gem a secret but I also want them to stay in business lol. Food was excellent we shared the Fried Chicken Benedict, Kale/Brussels salad and the Beignets (OMG beignets were on point!!!) Great job bar staff cocktails are a hit especially “High Tea”. Thank you for the great service Helen (our waitress) and the entire staff at Blue Door Kitchen definitely returning excited for patio season!!!
Great experience! Would definitely recommend, and plan on returning! Great staff and ambiance.
