I was on a business trip and staying at the Hilton Garden Inn on Main—I’d spent the day in the car and really wanted to find somewhere that was a close walk to the hotel so I could stretch my legs but not be too far away so I could be back in my room early to get some rest. Blue Corn Cafe was a five minute walk—perfect. The menu looked good but at that point I wasn’t being terribly picky, either. I made a quick reservation through Open Table for 5:30p. When I arrived, I was one of two tables with customers so it was very quiet. By the time I left, the tables were beginning to fill up and the noise level was rising a little but it was still a very quiet atmosphere. It’s small enough, though, that I could imagine it getting quite noisy if it were full and people were at the bar. Still, it was a very warm and cozy atmosphere—loved the ambiance, the artwork, and the general overall feel of the place. I didn’t feel at all out of place as a single diner.
The staff were all wonderful as well. I was able to engage in some friendly banter with them a little bit, which I always enjoy, and my server was extremely helpful in pointing me in the direction of less-spicy food (two days of road food had made my stomach a little extra sensitive). I was also really wanting a margarita but not wanting to subject my stomach to anything too sour and he worked with the bartender to get me a milder margarita that was still quite tasty—and just about the most fresh margarita I’d ever had.
I ordered the shredded chicken quesadillas with goat cheese and they were wonderful. The rice was a little on the dry side but the black beans and the salad with guacamole were excellent as well. Everything tasted like they had just picked the vegetables on the farm and thrown them in the pot. The balance of textures and cool vs warm was exactly on point.
All in all, what I had thought would just be a quick dinner to meet a purpose turned out to be thoroughly enjoyable. High recommend.
A Long time Durham standard, Blue Corn never disappoints. It has always been just a warm, welcoming and well run establishment. They seem to feel rushed and panicky as closing hour approaches and passes.
We celebrated our three year anniversary there and the staff was attentive and amiable. Food was great and the setting was gorgeous. 10/10
Food was mediocre. Atmosphere was nice. Few options to customize your meal.
Pleasant servers, plenty of tortilla chip appetizers, cocktails very good, food good not great (bit bland, but in fairness we did ask for “mild” spice level).
Lunch after Dr. appointment.
Food was poor
Each person in our party of 3 really enjoyed our entree’s. It’s a cool spot in a great location . We’ll be back.
Blue Corn Cafe was a perfect place for us as we had a mix of eating preferences from vegetarian, to a chicken and fish lover, to a red meat connoisseur. The three of us all left so satisfied and fulfilled! We all loved the flavors and the combinations of ingredients. Tessa was excellent providing upbeat, thorough service. Love the colorful, creative atmosphere.
Staff was wonderful. Our server Grace was so attentive and quick to help us. The restaurant is small and intimate. I love the fact they source all of their ingredients locally. The food was delicious. We had the chips and salsa sampler - all were delicious and house made. Our party tried several dishes on the menu and al were very good. The dessert menu has several choices - we tried the flan, tres leches cake and the seasonal cheesecake- all were delicious and made fresh in house. I highly recommend this locally owned restaurant.
Great food and great service. Lots of good vegetarian options.
GREAT food and EXCEPTIONAL service. The "famous" Black Bean and Sweet Potato stew deserves to be famous!
Outstanding service to complement a delicious, flavor-rich meal. I highly recommend the pollo con platanos and the queso. Blue Corn Cafe is a Ninth Street staple and worth spending your time, and money, at regularly.
Food, service, and atmosphere was wonderful… and the Sangria was FABULOUS!!
Haven't been to Blue Corn in a really long time. Never been for dinner, but years ago, used to go for lunch. Now it will be a regular spot. The food was fantastic! Loved everything we had. The food focus was flavor, not over-spiced for heat as some placed tend to do. The cleanliness and atmosphere made you feel very comfortable. The wait staff was so attentive and thoughtful. And the prices were shockingly good. Especially considering the area. Overall, I highly recommend going to Blue Corn.
Excellent food for a good price, great service. Highly recommend.
Food was prepared wonderfully and presented nicely. Both our dinners were very tasty and seasoned well. Service was very good and all other staff very attentive as well.
Blue Corn Cafe is a whole vibe!
The food was delicious and fresh! I highly recommend.
First time to area when we came across this little place. Food was great with tons of vegetarian options. Black beans and rice were fantastic and portion was huge. I would definitely recommend and would come back again!
Empanada and chicken tinga tacos were very good. The paella was too salty and the fish was over cooked. The guacamole was very good.
The Blue Corn is a neighborhood gem, with fantastic latin-inspired menu with a nice array of options. Casual and pretty.
Always good food at great prices
For a first time diner, it was hard to find parking and the windows looked dark when I drove by. They weren’t, I discovered. And I’m so glad I tried!
Very nice and attentive staff, fun menu and decor. Would definitely go back. Had recommendation chicken mole, which normally isn’t something I enjoy. But theirs was delicious!
Friday date night after a busy week at work for both of us. Food was really good and delivered hot to our table. Portions were very generous so we took home nearly as much as we ate at the BCC. We originally booked the reservation for outside seating, but it was chilly outside so we asked to be seated inside. Owner graciously took care of our request so that was a pleasant surprise. Will be back again.
Great food. Great service.
Blue Corn never fails to create a great dining experience! Thank you!
I went to this restaurant twice in one week. And each time I enjoyed dining there!:)
Excellent Latin food, large portions. The young man that was our server was excellent. Will return when I’m back in Durham.
Usually very good food - this time around the food was terrible
Good food! It was a good value for the size of dishes and quality! There are a lot of vegetarian options.
Great food as usual! Good to be out and about again.
I got the Picadillo and And my husband got the vegetarian fajitas. Both were excellent! The service is excellent as well.
Great for a casual dinner with friends!
Blue Corn Cafe made our date night exceptional. The restaurant is wonderfully cozy yet spacious. The service was excellent. From the moment we walked in to when we left, service was 10/10. The food was mouthwateringly delicious. Everything our server Troy recommended was delicious. We are definitely returning to try the rest of the menu.
Our first time here. The nachos starter was huge - I would even get it for an entree next time. Our server gave excellent recommendations and was very attentive. Will definitely go again!
Food was bland
The food was exceptionally delicious, I ordered Enchiladas con Mole which was so good! And shared these appetizers: Guacamole dip and chips and salsa, which were also so good. The service was great and the ambiance was lovely.
Great, courteous service- I like how our server told us fun details about the ingredients and the owner's menu choices. I did not care for the plantain chips, the calamari, or the Cuban sandwich, but my empanada and rice and beans were all yummy. I also enjoyed the flat plantain pancakes in the plantain platter. I'll have to try another margarita when I return, as the signature one just tasted like orange juice with ice to me. Easy street parking available during lunch-time hours. Try the house-made guava-chipotle hot sauce if you like-y the spice-y!
The food was delicious and the service was great!
