Blowfish Contemporary Sushi
I don't know when they added alcohol to the menu, but Blowfish serves it now and there is nothing better than having Sake with my favorite Ramen!
Great meal and very good service! Wonderful place tucked away in Edgewater.
Wonderful food-service was a bit slow to come to table but kitchen turned everything around so quickly. The food is fantastic and it’s my favorite sushi/ramen place on the north side of Chicago. Will go back again and again!
Great value on Bryn Mawr. I am so lucky to have this place in my neighborhood
We had an amazing time as group for my friends birthday. The blowfish team went above to help us celebrate. At times it felt extra loud, a little cramped, and under staffed but these things would not stope me from coming like bi-weekly still.
Service was slow to start. Sashimi was pretty good, though could have been fresher. Menu was very tight, well thought out, and most importantly: affordable. I'll definitely go back and bring my friends who may be newer to sushi and don't want to spend a million dollars.
Family was in town, wanted them to
Overall a pretty good night. It was Valentines so we knew it would be a mess anywhere but found a place away from the path that took reservations. Really that’s the only spot I have to knock them: they have nothing to speak of for waiting space and had definitely overbooked. So about me and a dozen of my fellow diners that waited almost a half hour after our time slot to be seated, had to awkwardly stand over patrons who already had they food. A bit awkward.
Once seated however it was a whole new experience. Fantastic food and drinks. Servers answered questions and were very prompt. We definitely want to come back when it’s less busy.
As usual, delicious flavors and surprising tastes. Crazy Valentines Day night but they seemed to handle it. We love the chips and fish and the Creamy Scallop roll is to die for.
I’ve been a few times and have had great experiences. The last time my wife got sick from the ramen.
The Raman is interesting, flavorful and substantial and the sushi is super fresh with interesting pairings.
Honor reservation, food is delish and reasonably priced
Great sushi at great prices. Bring your own bottle and order to heart's content and I bet you don't crack $50.
I love this place. I try to go there at every opportunity. I have not had a single dish that was not great. They use quality ingredients and them are reasonably priced at the same time.
Blowfish has ruined every other sushi place I go to. It is phenomenal! Mr. Fish is the most amazing chef out there. My usual is Stuffed Avo (fried avocado topped with a crab mix) and it’s fire. Crispy BBQ tuna (fires rice topped with crab mix) and it’s fire! Then we get the seaweed salad FIRE! And the crab salad FIRE! Then for the main course I get a couple rolls Sakura and dragon roll but their all...FIRE! Their poke is also really good ! Tasty and not over kill like chains like Aloha. Anyways this place is the greatest and I will continue to be a repeat customer!
Food is good but it’s way to loud. Hard to hear
Blowfish is such a gem! It gets busy on the weekend, but the food is can't miss.
Blowfish is located on a fairly busy street, typically with lots of street parking either on Bryn Mawr or Broadway. It sometimes gets pretty busy, so having the ease of booking a table ahead is a great convenience. It's BYOB, and the liquor store is a block+ east on the same street. I come here for the ramen and sushi, and am never disappointed: the classic, tonkotsu ramen, is comparable in taste to some higher end places, and even one I've tasted in Japan; it's visually very appealing and the pork belly is cooked to a nice, soft, fatty consistency that falls apart in your mouth. For appetizers we recently also ordered kara-age chicken - (not overly) breaded bits of chicken - large portion to share (tastes like a really good orange chicken, atop red cabbage, and pineapple bits), and also an order of shishito peppers, which I will be getting, again - slightly seared, in a nice more-on-the-sweet-side sauce.
I would also highly recommend snowball - delicious, seared white tuna atop a bit of rice - it's not too much of anything extreme taste-wise, just a nice clean starter.
A few notes: This place is always very clean, inclusive of the bathrooms. They are always very busy, so there is a slight waiting time for your server. However, once with you, they are very attentive and accurate, not to mention really nice.It does sometimes get cold inside - there's almost nothing they can do about this, but if you run cold, sit away from the door and window areas.
The service was fast. Server was nice.
The best no-fuss neighborhood ramen! The vegetarian ramen is super flavorful and satisfying. A great place to end the week with your friends with a bottle or two of wine.
Food was amazing, service was a bit slow
The service was great and the food was amazing! Nice ambiance too!
What a great find. Really good food and wonderful staff. It can get a bit loud, we made an early reservation so we could catch up :).
Blowfish was wonderful - it's a small space but didn't feel cramped. I had no issues talking to my date at a reasonable level without having so talk loudly or without being concerned that the table next to us could overhear. Food was GREAT and we were shocked at the bill total as it was so reasonable. The Tofu Shoyu Ramen was delicious and there was enough to take home for lunch the next day. My date had 2 sushi rolls which he loved. We were even talking about it the next day - we'll definitely be back!
So clutch once again for a delish meal with friends. We will definitely be back!
We love blowfish. The guests at the table next to us were obnoxious, loud, and out of control. We cut our meal short because they we insufferable. At some point, the restaurant should have asked them to tone it down or leave.
Great food! Great service. Big portions.
The ramen was some of the best I've had, and my niece and sister both enjoyed the sushi immensely. A warm welcome was extended from the hosts and the sushi chefs, which was delightful!
Great food and service! Will go back!! I would recommend to everyone, it is neighborhood gem!
The sushi is so delicious and service is friendly and fast. BYOB is always a plus!!! One of the best sushi places in the city!
We ordered sushi only. The quality of the fish is low. If you know good sushi, this place isn't for you. On the other hand, this is an inexpensive restaurant. Our friends ordered ramen and other hot appetizers, and they really liked.
Enjoyed dinner, accompanied by my girlfriend and her mother. Love coming here every time, and I’m always satisfied!
Quick efficient service - and they need to be; they were flipping tables frequently. But best ramen I’ve had so far in Chicago. I had the classic broth and it was rich, concentrated and savory. Only quibble would be that should serve it a little hotter. I like it steamy even in August. And the.noodles had a distinct flavor of rice flour which was delicious. Also perfectly al dente. The hard boiled egg was creamy - nice touch with the soy sauce marinade on the eggs. The pork belly and the veggies add texture, flavor and also counterbalance the terrific broth.
Also had a few pieces of nigiri. Fish was pretty good quality, and they were huge. Great bargain for the price.
Will definitely come back.
Great sushi. Come here every time I am in town for work.
The ramen was good, but the sushi was not fresh. In terms of ambiance, the tables were too close together and too small. The restaurant is BYOB without a corkage fee, which was nice, but the food was still about $70 for two people. Overall, there are better options in the city for the price.
Was all good !
A little slow service in the beginning, but they stepped it up throughout the meal, food was excellent, BYOB is a nice treat.
It’s a small place so be prepared to be a little cramped, also pretty dark which is a nice dinner ambience.
The menu is limited, but this lets them really excel at the dishes they offer. The ramen is especially good, with the most delicious, complex broth I have ever tasted. I especially love the black garlic version, but they are all good. Sushi and poke are made with care and excellent ingredients.
The prices are great too. You can absolutely stuff yourself for less than $30.
This is a BYOB place, so if you like beer or wine, bring it.
Excellent quality appetizers and rolls. Fish and Chips is to die for and the eclectic atmosphere of the restaurant patrons and neighborhood is a plus! Will definitely visit again!
