Block Kitchen + Bar - BANFF

Small but great menu, very interesting options. One of the items had something sprinkled on top that was moving. I have never seen this before. It was so thin it moves with the smallest air movement. Fascinating!
First time diners - all four of us were impressed with quality & quantity of servings. Unique & diverse menu meant final selections were very difficult & were not disappointed with results!
Salads great & curry chicken special outstanding.
Re-fashioned craft cocktail another winner!
We changed our dining plans for our last night in Banff & are returning!
Between four of us, we had a chartuerie board, the tuna tartar, the curry mussels, hangar steak and the lettuce wraps (pulled pork). The presentation and food was great, and that amount of food was filling too. Later in the evening, the music got a bit loud, but otherwise the experience was good.
Delicious food. We shared different dishes, all were very tasty. I really liked the flatbread and the mussels.
When holidaying in Lake Louise we booked Block Kitchen & Bar after reading reviews through Open Table. We were not disappointed and had a great night. The food
was excellent, service friendly and a great wine list. I highly recommend booking a table as there are only a few.
On a Saturday night, I understand why it would be busy. There were two servers that also served as bartenders. It took awhile to get water refilled, took an even longer time to get our bill considering the bar and another large table were keeping them busy. I do appreciate them taking off the chorizo sausage off our tab because we just couldn't eat it. It wasn't for our palate. There were basically 2-3 pieces of sausages under a mountain of random quinoa and vegetable broth mix - not for anyone wanting something simple. The cheese + charcuterie board was amazing and the bread was perfect. Just be careful if they ask you if you want more bread because you will get charged $3 for 5 more additional little pieces of naan bread. I hate to sound like I hate the place as this is our second time visiting and the first time was an absolute blast. Hence, the decision to return. I would simply recommend to come at the right time when it's not busy so that the service would be 10x better and make sure to try the charcuterie board!
Small gem, delicious food.
Dinner was great. The menu was not large but enough to satisfy our family. The staff was very friendly. Fun atmosphere. Small restaurant though.
EXCELLENT! Shared a selection of hot and cold food from the menu - charcuterie was fantastic - but so was everything else we ordered! Good drinks and great service too. Be sure to book ahead as it's popular
The Block is our go to destination every time we are in Banff. We love the fact you can make reservations, even for lunch. The food is so varied and inventive: our problem is trying to pick. We are torn between wishing the restaurant was a little bigger (and less crowded) or being glad it is so small and special. The Asian influenced items are excellent, but if you want something more local (bison burger) then you will also be happy. Service is great!
Really good casual meals with excellent value and really friendly staff
My three sisters and I were in Banff for the weekend to celebrate our birthday. We had an outstanding dinner at the Block. The food was fantastic, but it was the service that really blew us away. Tamara and Stephanie were attentive, they made excellent suggestions with the menu and were tons of fun. They made a lovely dining experience truly outstanding and we look forward to coming back soon!
Very nice place. Good service. Probably needs more variety in food. Like sandwiches and salad.
Food was great in taste and presentation. Service was not that great. Manager Andy, Bartender Tamara and server Stef were working the restaurant . Stef was not that attentive and didn't return for food checks. We had to flag either Andy or Stef down to get more drinks or order more food. We were not given any notice of the kitchen closing and therefore we couldn't order desserts. It seemed that Stef was busy doing dishes in the kitchen rather than tending to tables most of the night. The atmosphere is very small and the tables are quite tight to the chairs and other tables not leaving much room to feel relaxed. We we return? Maybe but it won't be our first choice.
Very surprising good reviews for such overall poor food quality, taste and presentation.
My favourite restaurant in Alberta, without question. It's worth the drive from Calgary. Outstanding every single time.
Very cozy. Great food with some interesting twists on old favourites.
Our family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Block. The food was excellent and the menu had something for everyone! Would definitely visit again when in Banff.
After a rigorous day of hiking at Moraine Lake, our dinner at Block Kitchen was relaxing and delicious. We enjoyed attentive servers and a lovely meal of hanger steak with chimichurra sauce. Located in the heart of Banff, we also enjoyed after dinner shopping in the town. I also appreciated the gluten free options at Block Kitchen. I do recommend a reservation for seating is limited.
AWESOME place - didn't know what to expect coming in but the cozy setting and amazing food was a great experience - will be back for sure!
Great find in busy Banff! Eclectic and quaint...and the food was amazing! Some dishes had curry flavours with modern twist. Absolutely delish!
Although this restaurant is very small, only a handful of tables inside, the food is quite good and unique. The flat bread with shaved bison was a particular favorite as was the the hummus trio. If a different dining experience from the usual pub fare is desired, Block Kitchen and Bar is worth a try.
Interesting and creative menu. We enjoyed the first evening so much that we went back a second night and tried new items on the menu. Excellent!
Great tapas menu with many special touches. Small room but also a good place to meet locals. Had a good dinner visit with a former NHL star living in the area, for example.
Funky creative chef spot in a small space downtown. Delicious food.
Really fun and eclectic mix of food choices and flavours. Cozy little spot, warm service, and fun flavour combinations. Calamari was the best we have ever had (...and we have eaten a lot of calamari!)
We came here for a girls night Bachelorette party and had a great time! I gave our server the budget we were working with and he recommended everyone pick a few things to share. We had an awesome meal with delicious food - we spent $200 on food (not including tax and tip) plus a couple bottles of wine and we all ate enough to feel super satisfied (10 of us). Great service, delicious food. Definitely recommend!
We really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere here. However, the service needs considerable work. For our reservation, we were seated at the bar, which was great. However, our server was the bartender who was extremely busy making drinks constantly and it was hard to get his attention. It's hard to blame him for anything -- this place just needs to hire another server. That would be my recommendation. Other than that, a fun place.
I really like the food here. It is so tasty and well prepared. All the dishes we picked were good.
First time here and the food was great. Looking forward to going back again to try some more things on the menu.
We stopped in to Block Kitchen & Bar strolling through Banff. We tried the salmon sandwich which was terrific - the added spice was a nice touch. The coconut curry broth soup was fresh and definitely something I could have had as an entree alone - yes, it was that good. Enjoyed the brown ale on tap (not something I see that often). The Zen salad was also very good and great for sharing. Would love to come back and try it again. Well done!
Shrimp with peanut sauce was great! Beet salad wasn't very good (I'm not partial to Asian dressings though).
Loved all the dishes. We shared 8 dishes between 4 of us and I am not able to choose a favourite because they were all so good. Lots of seafood choices. Both the clam and mussels were a stand out. It's very small so reservations are recommended .
Block was a great find for me. The atmosphere was funky and I loved the ambience. My only negative: they really need a bigger spot since it is a bit tight. Overall, I was impressed from start to end. The menu is simple and they even offer daily specials for the day which was their curry. Unfortunately, most of their curry dishes were sold out for the day so I opted for other items off the menu. The first thing I had was their Lavender Mule – it was so delicious that I finished in record time. Next up was the Tuna tartare. I loved the spiciness and the crunch of the crostini’s which were served on the side. I also had the spicy grilled prawns (not as spicy as I had hoped) but still very tasty and they provide a great portion too. My least favourite of the night was the chicken skewers which was a part of the daily special for the evening. Although the chef prepared 3 separate dipping sauces I found it to be a bit salty. I took it back with me as a late night snack and personally I liked it better at room temperature. I was also coaxed into having a second drink so I had the Orange Mojito. At first I didn’t like it very much because you can taste the rind from the orange. The bartender asked if I liked it and I told him it was too bitter for me and he said he could make the drink sweeter for me and if I didn’t like it then I could switch back to my original drink. Not many restos that I’ve been too would do that – they would still charge you for the drink even if it weren’t touched. Overall, it was a great place to hang out and listen to music without being pressured to leave.
They were spot on in the kitchen, we ate so much! We ladies loved the gin and the lavender mule cocktails. Thanks for the great time.
The food was simply fabulous - creative and very tasty. They were very accommodating to fit us in and took great care of us. The menu lends itself well to kids (our son is 7 years old) and we thoroughly enjoyed the food (Duck Poutine, Spring rolls, Bison Flat bread and Edamame were all delicious). The quality and tastiness of the food more than makes up for the somewhat cramped space.
This place is very small so make reservations ahead.
We found this gem on yelp and decided to give it a try. It was so worth it! Ended up being one of our favorite places in Banff. It's a very small venue with crowded seating, but once your food arrives, you won't even notice anymore! We tried four dishes and were wowed by every one. Service was amazingly fast for a single guy handling bar tending, waiting tables, and bussing tables! He was friendly, energetic, and got every part of our order correct. What an amazing experience!
We sampled a variety of dishes, and each was incredible!
Typically there's always something that is sort of a 'meh' dish, but everything we had was bursting with incredible flavour!
I looked at the menu online, and knew what I was going to order before I even got there.
Things changed once I saw the specials menu, and I was very happy with my selections.
The duck special was to die for, and the wild rice and beetroot shiraz sauce was amazing!
I had the rainbow chicken curry, and it was the best curry I have ever had!
We also shared starters, the zen salad, which had a magical sesame ginger dressing I think I could drink, and this dressing paired incredibly well with the spicy prawns as they cut the heat nicely. The prawns were amazing in their own right, and I wish I could have stolen more of the peanut sauce to take home and use to add flavour to dishes I make at home :-)
Food was fairly priced and portions were very adequate. Excellent food for sharing!
I can't wait to come back as there are many more items on the menu I want to try!
It's too bad the restaurant is so small, because food this good needs to be served to more people!!
Top notch guys!
Keep it up :-)
Very small (much smaller than expected) so be sure to make a reservation. Great food and reasonable pricing for lunch.
