Spent a lovely cple hours on a Sunday enjoying fabulous food great service and lovely atmosphere. All parties enjoyed very much
Will be back again soon !
We have gone to Blackshop on three separate occasions now, but this was the first time we went for brunch. The menu was small, but still made it challenging to pick our meals as they all sounded delicious. My partner had the steak and eggs and I had the Italian sausage burger and caesar salad. My partner's meal was a little bit of a let down as the steak was a bit over cooked, but the rest of the meal was delicious. My italian sausage burger was delicious and the salad complimented it well - LOTS of garlic. I also ordered a vanilla latte, which did not disappoint. We were in a bit of a rush, so we couldn't stick around to look over the entire dessert menu, but the server was very thoughtful and packed us a wonderful cheese cake for my partner's birthday. The service was great and the food was delicious. We will continue to use Blackshop as our special occasion meal location for many years to come!
Our first visit. It is a comfortable restaurant. On arrival we were given our choice of areas to dine in, the cafe, bar high top table or dining room. We chose the latter and given a comfortable table.
The server greeted us and offered water and took our drink order. Bread was also provided which you don’t see that often anymore.
We came for the fresh fish menu they had featured throughout March. We both ordered the oysters on a half shell with salsa and the pickerel.
The 6 oysters came on a plate with the salsa atop each one. Unfortunately the oysters were served at room temperature which compromised their flavour. The salsa was tasty enough but the appetizers appeal was lost with the temperature.
The pickerel was served shortly after and we both found it delicious. Pan seared over gnocchi ...very nicely prepared and presented.
We shared the dessert trio and it was a great ending.
They have a good selection of wines, by the glass, 1/2 litres and bottles.
We agreed we will both return and try the regular menu.
We have been a few times and never let down. Aside from special menus like Valentines day gets too cramped and busy. But any other night is amazing. The steak me and my wife had was suburb nice and tender and even though we had restrictions due to meal plans they accommodated without issue. Definitely going back again!!
Good Food. Good Service. Small but well rounded menu with enough diversity in the selection that should give just about everyone something they would like. The wait staff is very professional. We enjoy coming here once every few months for a nice dinner. Even our teenage son enjoys dinner here. In fact, it was his request for his birthday dinner! Go figure!
Overall good experience...I do think a bit overpriced for the food and the experience.
Would have give 5 stars all the way around. However we had made the reservation via open table a week in advance requesting a booth as we were celebrating an engagement. When we arrived we were told a booth was not available and that they were very busy, and that everyone had requested booths prior to us. It wasn’t until we pointed out that we had made the reservation a week in advance and requested a booth did one suddenly become available. The waiter was awesome he did his best to make our experience a good one as there was a hiccup in the beginning and we almost left. He turned it around as he was phenomenal. The food was also delicious.
A very beautiful restaurant on the inside, ambience is truly 10/10. However, like many other reviewers, was largely disappointed that the 'special occasion' was not acknowledged at all. What is the point of indicating the specific occasion on open table when making reservations if they're not acknowledged at all? Seems kind of pointless. Did not by any means expect an embarrassing song or a candle but a tiny inconspicuous message on our dessert would have been nice.
Meal presentation was very nice but again, like other reviewers, felt my meal was heavily over-salted and it took away from the rich variety of flavours I would have expected (I had the catfish from the seasonal 'fish festival' menu). The catfish was the only item on my plate with a distinct flavour and that was because it was very spicy (and I love a good spice). Sweet potatoes and the array of vegetables with I believe crab mixed in there all tasted the same and had me pounding back water glasses to overcome the salt.
My only other complaint is that the place was very noisy. Even after making reservations well in advance for two people I felt we were squished by the door within arms reach of very noisy, large groups.
Excellent. Great value. Never disappointed. Will go there again.
Good food and service. Nice restaurant. Great location
Had an amazing experience with amazing food. Our waitress was the sweetest person. I don't remember her name but she was blonde and was from Montreal. Will definitely be back!
The service was excellent, the food was wonderful. This was the first time I have been there for lunch and also the first time I have been back to the Blackshop in a while. It was also the first time for my guest at the Blackshop and he also really enjoyed his lunch. I won’t wait so long to return.
Excellent flavours infused in my halibut dish!!! Was a little disappointed though that the reason for the dinner (birthday) was not acknowledged
We were there to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday. I had informed the staff that my wife's sister from BC would be surprising her, along with my father-in-law, partway through the meal. Our server handled it masterfully and the surprise came off without a hitch. We enjoyed an amazing time together and, as always, the food was fantastic!
Had a great meal. First time customers. Food portions were large. Good menu selections. A bit of everything for everyone. Mid priced.
It was really good, the ambulance was nice it got a little loud over lunch. However understaffed and was going to order dessert but it took so long we just decided it was time to go
We visited this restaurant for the Fresh Fish and Seafood Festival. The seafood chowder was very good (and this was according to a Maritimer), the Blackened Catfish was cooked nicely and was definitely spicy. The accompanying sweet potato hash not so great. The Beet Salad was disappointing, and not the same salad as offered on the lunch menu. The lamb was tasty but not cooked as ordered, so definitely some overall issues with the kitchen. Our comments were handled promptly and efficiently by our server and the floor manager and our bill was adjusted.
Lovely meal, service and ambiance had a great special occasion thankyou
Excellent food and great service
I was meeting friends from Toronto and they were also impressed with both the food and surroundings.
We have already recommended this location to many friends.
Really friendly and warm staff.
Great to have an enjoyable evening with our son and his girlfriend. Pleasant place to have a nice meal.
Reserved table for 2
Arrived at location, host brought us to a cozy location in the restaurant (5/5)
Waitress arrived, noted drinks and was professional but lacked social interaction, didn't feel welcomed (2/5)
Drinks arrived & waitress took order for main meal (didn't order any appetizer's but was offered) (4/5)
1/2 litre of their selection wines averaging $30
Approximately 35-40mins before food had arrived
Excited, I ordered the Salmon - Priced at $34 , it came with a savory sauce, some type of rice & other little things, the salmon looked like a piece of salmon that would cost about $6 at the grocery store. Plate should have had more salmon, slightly disappointed by the lack of salmon on the plate, still hungry & ended up eating off my partners plate. (1/5) Salmon was luke warm , around the outside & warm on the inside but not hot, the food underneath was cold/luke warm.
Very disappointed for the cost of the salmon.
Presentation was nice but lacked a real meal for $34 , meal looked & tasted like it was worth about $13
My partner ordered chicken breast approx $26 , meal was delicious, more flavorful & had more quantity than the salmon order, was also warm to touch/hot.
waitress came back and asked how meal was halfway through my plate, I responded it was good. (not wanting to upset the waitress)
Still hungry after paying $34 for the dish, I started eating off my partners plate, the waitress did not say ANYTHING (1/5) , she most time refilled our drinks but didn't say much, there was a huge lack of social interaction with the waitress which was very disappointing. (2/5)
We ordered dessert , it was $9, a little pricey for the amount of dessert that was presented, the taste & presentation was perfect. (4/5) Price could have been better.
Overall, it was a good for a special occasion, not sure if I would go back considering the prices were a little bit ridiculous.
Still tipped 15% (Should have tipped 5%)
Overall experience 3/5
- Wine list was extensive
- Scallops were undercooked
- Steak was ordered medium rare but came medium/well
- Creme brulee was delicious
The Food was Very Good. Two disappointments would be how noisy it was in the Restaurant and the Coffee tasted like Hot Flavoured Dishwater.
I've taken my wife a couple times to Blackshop and generally it was great. But I felt this Valentines menu fell short. The food tasted great but portions seem smaller than usual. Not sure if it was because its a Valentines menu and they were so busy they went will smaller sizes. But my main issue was the incredibly intoxicated lady beside us swearing like a trucker and the servers not doing anything about it. I suppose I should have talked to a manager but they were right beside us I didn't want them to say anything to us. Even our server said he knew she was wasted but yet nothing was done. I don't feel like we will be returning for another visit.
We always have a great dining experience at the Blackshop. Very friendly staff, great food, and great atmosphere.
The food was OK, my mashed potatoes were cold. We have certainly had better meals at this place in the past.
We had a great dinner, and a seat by the fireplace. Very nice. The service was a bit slow, but pleasant.
We came to celebrate a friend's birthday and were not disappointed with the menu choices nor the wine list (his favourite). The service was great......the quiet family dining room was intimate and the surprise birthday dessert was delicious and not expected. Thanks for a lovely evening.
I found this spot on Trip Advisor having never heard of it before. I made my reservation through Open Table. Very easy to do. The decor was lovely and the service was outstanding. Our server helped us with selections and was very attentive. The food came out hot and delicious. I ordered the pasta special and it was excellent. Good wine selection as well. I highly recommend this restaurant. I will defiantly be back.
It is very rare we go out for a nice dinner experience. I really enjoyed all three courses. The Beef tenderloin just melted in my mouth.
We did not feel rushed and could enjoy our meals and have a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
The Blackshop was very accommodating regarding menu items. The last time I was there was about 2 years ago and the restaurant had plain schnitzel with mashed potatoes as an entrée. I do not like cheese and did not see this item on the menu. When I asked about it, the waitress indicated that it could be done without cheese. As well, I just wanted a garden salad that was not listed on the menu but again they were very accommodating.
The only issue I had was that when I did the booking online, I did indicate that it was for my birthday but somehow that message did not/was not conveyed over as I did not receive my birthday dessert.
The ceasar salad and french onion soup was delicious..but the salmon entree didnt taste very good at all...and for 31.00 you should be able to enjoy your meal..
Also....the seating could be more private...
You felt like the people beside you were at the same table..
We had a gift card to try it but probably wont be back...sorry
Very attentive service. Food looked and tasted very good. Liked the touch on the desert, for the birthday girl.
This was my first experience at Blackshop & based on the would definitely return.
Excellent restaurant. If we lived in Cambridge we'd eat there every week. The restaurant is very relaxed in its colour palette, comfortable seating and quiet atmosphere. The menu has enough variety and the wine list is superb. Service is always friendly, professional and attentive. We look forward to dining there anytime we need to be near Cambridge.
We had a lovely evening at the Blackshop. The appetizers were delicious (mixed platter) and the beef tenderloins were cooked to perfection, exactly as we asked - medium rare - and warm! The only shadow to the evening was a very loud table of 6 close by...
Would only recommend to a friend for their main courses and for sitting in the bar area. The seated couch area is not very cozy or intimate. Feels like your eating in a group setting or in a fish bowl. Our Ceasar salad was underwhelming. We think they forgot to add the dressing and our coffees came to us lukewarm. Unacceptable for a restaurant of this magnitude. So will restrict our attendance to when we want a good main course without the unnecessary fanfare. Thus the bar and the high seating areas are more suitable to ensure we get some privacy while we eat and talk.
Birthday - great experience as always
Had a special, cod with a beet cream sauce among other things. Very tasty!
