Good food and good service
Black Salt always has wonderful fresh seafood options. It is one of my favorite places in DC to get seafood. I am always impressive with the creativity of the menu, and it is always well executed. I never skip the raw oysters- they have a great selection and are always so fresh. The service is wonderful, and it's a nice quiet atmosphere. Highly recommend!
If you haven't been there before, it's definitely a great place to dine for a special occasion.
BlackSalt is only one or two neighborhoods away from our own, but would be well worth a longer trip. Stylish and comfortable at the same time, it is unique (fish market in front) yet authentic... a true neighborhood treasure that feels slightly upscale and special for its casual vibe. We will be back...it is now going to be in our rotation.
The food is always outstanding as is the service. My only complaint is that bread is not provided unless asked for.
Food was very good, but ambience could use work. And, it’s loud.
Our favorite restaurant in DC. The Sunday brunch is sensational and we go frequently. The staff is always wonderful. We ate our final meal in DC here because they never fail to please and we wanted to say goodbye.
Food was spectacular, restaurant was reasonably quiet, service was good!
It was pretty loud but I guess that’s because of how good it is; and the amount of people that go
Our waiter was great and very attentive, and took very seriously any and all questions about menu items and whether or not they could be prepared differently to deal with personal preferences. These were accomplished seamlessly. My only beef is that he smelled strongly of cigarettes, which is a major turnoff for me, and likely a good many more. I have severe asthma, triggered by smoke, among other things, so it's a health issue as well. Other than that, the meal was very good, and our guests enjoyed it.
Excellent quality of food products and presentation, fish, lobster and crab cake very good; good service.
Some desserts, like creme brulée, are presented in a very creative way.
I will repeat.
Stellar experience as always.
Warm, welcoming, quiet enough for conversation. Lunch is a bargain for the quality. Excellent seafood, lovely seasonal vegetable salad, delicious flight of creme brûlées. Dinner has a more elegant feel and a good wine list.
destination restaurant for seafood and excellent service and dinning care
I have been there dozens of times. I rated the noise level as quiet because we were in the back room which was great given the fact that it was a business dinner. The four of us shared some starters which were outstanding. The problem came with the entrees. Two of us had branzino that was deboned poorly. Indeed, I was unable to eat it after getting pierced by a bone. Ugh.
The food was well prepared although I did have some shell bits in my crab cakes. For the advertised quality of this restaurant was expecting a bit better attention to details like this. We have enjoyed fine dining all over the world and I think the price point is a bit high for the overall experience here. The tables were extremely close together with some distracting noise levels. The wait staff were competent but seemed harried and impersonal. We didn’t note any unique decor or table settings. A better than average choice for good seafood but lacking the refinement expected in a fine dining experience.
The service was outstanding. We chose to dine at Black Salt for New Years Eve because we didn’t want fanfare prices and fixed menu that other establishments were offering. Our dinner was perfect from beginning to end. This was our first time at Black Salt, we will return!
I now understand why Blacksalt was dropped form the list of the 100 restaurants of the Washingtonian. Very limited offer for main dishes in the lunch menu. The only fish (non salmon) was bland, lacking flavor and the seafood stew offer very little delight to the paladar. Appetizers were good, in particular the tuna tartare. The waiter seemed annoyed when we ask for a clarification. I doubt we would go back.
Everything we ordered was truly outstanding and the service was top-notch!
What a gem for Sunday brunch! Black Salt offers comforting and creative twists to many traditional brunch favorites. Our server was excellent--he made recommendations based solely on our preferences and recommended, upon request, excellent cocktails. Those in our party opted for a variety of types of brunch entrees with some enjoying shrimp and grits and crab cake stacked eggs Benedict, while others enjoyed almost decadent French toast.
We'll be back for brunch and for dinner!
Fifth or sixth time in this restaurant, I know the menu well, I feel that the quality of the food is decreasing everytime. The fish soup ($36) was litteraly composed of 1prawn, 3 tiny mussels and half of a fish fillet. The fish broth, which was what made the soup distinctive, has been replaced by chap coconut milk. The waiter told us that the soup came w asian vegetables but came instead w boiled broccoli. Definitively NOT worth the price.
This will be my last time.
We enjoyed a nice dinner with business associates and were treated to excellent service and fantastic food. This was not our first meal at Black Salt and will not be our last either! Amazing seafood entrees, but if you do not care for fish, the menu is limited.
Excellent food. Highly recommend the mussels, grilled calamari, Caesar salad and any fish!
Christmas Eve dinner in the back room was lovely, elegant with outstanding food and service.
Always think of Black Salt for dinner and buying fresh fish - our first brunch and it was fabulous! Definitely will be back for brunch too! Excellent food!
Great food and service as always.
We dined in the back room which was lovely. Food, drink and service were excellent which is their standard.
I’ve traveled all over the world and this is hands-down some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. Hats off to the chef, we will definitely be returning soon!
We were there for our 25th wedding anniversary with my wife. We reached the back dining room. It was really quiet, outstanding service and delicious meals. Our server was also really a good advice for wines. Finally, as it was our anniversary, they offered us good remembrance of the restaurant. We really loved this place, our meals and we are very grateful for the kindness they showed us.
DC Seafood Gem. Great for dinner with friends or date night. Do not miss having Mojito when you arrive. You will enjoy dipping the sugar stick in the drink!
service was not up to your standards..server seemed totally disinterested in his work...but food was delicious !!!
i think Black Salt teeters on an edge of becoming a really good restaurant or being mediocre. after multiple dinners there the dishes are uneven. occasionally sensational. for example, the same fried clams dish one night is mealy cooked in oil probably not hot enough and the next airy flaky and delightful. the halibut one night dry, clearly overcooked with an uneven sauce;the next time the epitome of pan roasted fish. usually the wait staff are attentive and knowledgeable. most recently a waiter who was either not taking his medication or had had too much. it feels to me as though someone isn't fully 'managing the restaurant. it's not cheap and it ought to be more consistent.
Excellent seafood dishes, wonderful wine list, efficient and friendly service. What can one want more?
This was an Anniversary Dinner and Black Salt made it all the more special. A page on the menu wishing us a Happy Anniversary. How cool is that? Had to do a double take. And a beautiful dessert to top off the meal. But we came Black Salt is eat fish and seafood. Wonderful selection of oysters to start. Sardine and salad appetizers. Red Snapper and Black Bass cooked perfectly. (wish my stove could generate that much fire) Eric with wine steered us toward a white Burgundy that was delicious with the meal and did not require a second mortgage.
One of the best meals we had while vacationing in DC. Highly recommended.
Consistently excellent from cocktails to fish to desert..
Reliably wonderful sea food and service. Always a good value!
The restaurant in the back is quiet and elegant. The market and casual dining up front is boisterous, but walking through to the back restaurant creates an immediate welcoming calm. The food was delicious and very thoughtfully and elegantly prepared, and the service was attentive, welcoming, personal and well informed.
I love Black Salt and today was a perfect example of how the neighborhood restaurant with the sophisticated menu piles perfection on perfection. One of my favorite places in DC.
Excellent service and the food was great.
