Had to ask for booth after being seated at a table where we could not hear each other speak. They did accommodate our request...thankfully.
Got the gumbo and crab cakes. Very good seafood. Got the occasion wrong ; it was anniversary not birthday! Great dessert: peanut butter crunch cake.
We made the mistake of celebrating two birthdays at brunch instead of lunch. This is usually one of our favorite restaurants, but we always go for lunch or dinner. We weren’t thrilled with the brunch menu and found our entrees mediocre. Also, the restaurant was quite loud. Not a great mother-daughter birthday experience.
Great brunch. Will do again--soon, I hope. Excellent poached eggs, oyster po-boy.
Excellent crab cakes! Service very good. The noise level is high, but everything else is great.
I felt cold no smile at the reception. Your food is wonderful. The waiter seemed nice at the first then he turned cold as we stayed too long. I had to ask for desert menu. We noticed other servers were smiling. Is it because I asked for doggy bags? Is it because we are all Japanese?
Great food no complaints at all.
Everything was delicious and fresh! The best oysters in the area! The skate wing was the most tender and succulent I have ever tasted. Loved the wine selection.
Great salmon and fish tacos!!
Close to the water and clearly the chef has a great feel for his product. The service was spot on. If Colorado wasn’t so far away, I would be a regular at this place.
I've been to Black Salt many times, and for the most part have had good experiences. This time, however, left me disappointed and embarrassed. My cousin and her son (a cheery and sweet young man disabled by Downs Syndrome) are visiting from out of town. I wanted to take them out for a wonderful dinner and chose Black Salt for one reason only; I knew I could get a burger for the young man (He is obsessed with good burgers and orders nothing else). However, because we were ordering a few minutes after 7 (no burgers after 7) and because we were seated in the dining room (no burgers in the dining room, but a necessity for us for disability reasons), Black Salt's manager refused our request to order a burger for him.
I politely asked him to please make an exception. He insisted that, because it was after 7, he had no burgers to offer us, as if the kitchen's stock and abilities were somehow radically transformed by the clock. The young man wound up not eating at all because there was nothing else on the menu he wanted.
My cousin felt humiliated, and I felt betrayed. Black Salt is a very successful restaurant. They will not miss me one iota, but I believe that the manager is a poster boy for insensitivity, setting a bad example for his servers (who apologized to us). We were very nice to everyone there; we did not make a scene, nor try to explain why the burger was necessary. It would have humiliated my young second cousin, and there was no way I would ever do that.
This kind of behavior typifies why so many people find dining in Washington unbearable for its pretense, its pomposity, and its insensitivity. By way of contrast, yesterday, I took the young man to the U street Ben's Chili Bowl where everybody there acted like he was an old friend and long-time customer. They prepared a burger that's not even on the menu, and they did it with good cheer and affection while they were absolutely overwhelmed by long lines. What a spectacular contrast in two Washingtons.
My second time to come and it again met my standards and expectations!
The wait staff was the best I 've ever experienced in the city. The food and it's presentation were on point. I would recommend Black Salt to anyone who likes fresh fish.
We have loved BlackSalt for years. Now we have more reasons to love it with the outstanding addition of Chef Kelly Morrison. We love Kelly. What a great addition to a wonderful group.
Loved the Happy Birthday greeting printed on menu. Highly recommend.
Great experience and the food and service match! A bit off the beaten path but so worth it! A must for any occasion.
Second time here and had a great time. Personable impeccable service and great food! Looking forward to next time.
Great seafood as always and attentive service. Some nice new wines in the selection.
Fabulous in every way.
The seafood stew is truly delicious. Luscious squid shrimp mussels and chunks of fresh fish. Worth repeated visits.
I love the restaurant and find its environment always fun. The food is always excellent but it was a really cold this time.
Blacksalt was wonderful as always! The food and service never disappoint. I would recommend it to anyone, anytime.
We have had many family celebrations at BlackSalt, from birthdays to graduations. We were disappointed with this visit. The service was slow and inattentive, not like previous dinners. The sommelier, however, was very good and helpful. The restaurant was not so crowded so that didn't explain the slow service. I think we will look elsewhere for our next celebratory gathering.
A good dinner but sadly, nothing special.
The food was great and service was personable, very professional and accommodating.
Highly recommend this restaurant.
Wonderful meal. Exceptional and attentive service by our waitress.
Excellent service and food in a mature environment. Didn’t have to strain to hear conversations. Bery nice experience
The back dining room in one of the best dining rooms in the city. Intimate, bright enough for business or pleasure. Great service, including one of the most knowledgeable and easy going somms around.
For our twice yearly get together with friends from France, Black Salt is great. We all like the food selections and options, the service is attentive and the wine list comprehensive for us. It’s not what you’d call a bargain eatery but for these special occasions, it’s fine.
I go to BlackSalt whenever I come to D.C. One of the best restaurants around. Outstanding food and service every time.
Wonderful meal - the clam chowder was a real highlight. Our waiter, I believe his name was Tom, was superb - his attentiveness, thoughtful suggestions and attitude really took the meal over the top.
Food is "okay" and service was good, although our server had an attitude and was patronizing.
If you haven't been around, this restaurant is fine and may even impress you. I am a foodie and after having been in good restaurants world over, the food at Black Salt was merely "okay".
I had indicated on the reservation that it was for our wedding anniversary but the restaurant didn’t acknowledge the occasion. When I brought that up to hostess after our meal, she said that “ no notes” came through to them for my Open Table reservation...which was a bit disappointing (sounds like there was a glitch somewhere). She did however offer a free dessert to go, but we were ready to leave and politely declined.
It was my wife’s birthday and the menu had happy birthday Adrianne right on it. My friends thought I was a rock star. Branzino was outstanding, her salad was outstanding and the wine sommelier was great. She picked a Barolo that was over the top at $90. My friend is taking a date there this weekend. Will go back!!!
Lunch was delicious and noise level fine. Not sure about the server quality these days. Maybe it’s a consequence of the lunch beat but our waiter forgot 2 items in my order-a beverage and bread specifically requested. A little more attentiveness would help.
I am a frequent patron. Always reliable. Fresh fish, properly prepared. Service attentive and appropriate for the price point.
The service was impeccable. Delicious food. I loved it, will be back.
Black Salt an amazing seafood experience
The food and service are always great. Unfortunately we had a table near a loud party of eight adults. Felt like we were having dinner in a bar. Would be great if the manager could have asked them to quiet down.
Consistently delicious food and excellent service! The fish preparations are always a treat.
Had heard wonderful things about the quality of the seafood and the chef. All in all, it ended up being an average meal-some of the sauces seemed a bit overbearing for the dishes. Waiter was attentive, staff was quite nice. But all in all, more expensive than the experience warranted.
