BlackSalt Ratings and Reviews
Very disappointed. For a fish restaurant, you would think that they could at least get the shrimp cocktail right. $15 for 5 very small, limp and dirty shrimp. We only ate one and sent the order back. Two other fish/scallop meals were ok. One was horrible. It was a very small dish with two very small bite size pieces of lobster on top of veggies. Waste of money! The bill was $205.00 for three meals, two drinks, and no desert! Horrible!!!
Love this place. One of my top 3 Go-To places in NW DC. Deserve early, black Salt is a local favorite for the surrounding neighborhoods.
Exceptional food with fresh fish expertly cooked and presented. The staff works well together and makes dining a pleasure.
Makes sure to ask detailed questions about the entrees on the menu, there is substantial creativity in the preparation and you'll want to know as much as possible when making a selection. No slab of fish on a plate at Black Salt
We met our friends from Alexandria there and they had received great feedback on my choice of restaurants. We were not disappointed. From cocktails to appetizers to entrees to dessert, everything was delicious, well prepared, and outstanding. I would have gone back the next night if I could have. A great find!
Very nice meal. Have been there multiple times in the past but on Satyrday we sat in the rear wine room. Much quieter than the main restaurant and an extremely pleasant space. Will definitely ask to sit there In future.
Black salt has wonderful fish and my only complaint is the temptation to over garnish dishes. One if ya had the crab cakes which were straightforward and wonderful. I had a scallop dish. Marvelous sweet scallops but to many other things on the plate. Seafood stew again cleaner presentation. Key lime pie for dessert always super. Prices remain a bit higher than seems right for a "neighborhood" restaurant but perhaps that is not the right label for Bkack Salt
Good food but very over priced for what was offered. It’s a place I would mention if someone needed an idea for a place to go but I would not put it on my list as a must go to place. The wine was very over priced ( ex. bottles for 17$ if purchased at the wine store were 17$ a glass here). The grilled squid was ok but nothing to rave about. The sea bass was just ok but at $38 it was vaguely disappointing (4 oz of fish with beans). The oysters were good.
I really like this place a great deal and I’ve never been disappointed in the food, it seems to of gotten better over time as well. The only thing is the tables are simply too close together so they should remove a couple of the small ones to make just a little bit more room. Otherwise just a fabulous place.
We were seated in the quieter linen-tablecloth room at the rear, with attentive and explanatory service. One of us has an extreme allergy to allium family veg -- onions, garlic, leeks, chives -- and it's usually very difficult as most dressings and preparations include one or more of these. The server worked with chef to grill bronzino with lemon & dill in olive oil only, much appreciated. Excellent wines.
As a visitor to DC, I reserved at table at The Black Salt based on their online menu and a few reviews. I was very pleased that I had. Do not be put off when you arrive and see a fish market. You pass through it to a nice space that is the restaurant. Food was exceptional, inventive, and well presented. Service was friendly and prompt. It was a dining experience not to be missed.
I haven’t been to this restaurant in ages. It is still as good as the first time. I had the fish tacos for lunch and altho the fish was more heavily breaded than I prefer, the tortillas tasted real and the slaw was nice and fresh. My friend gobbled up his crabcake in a flash. The only complaint there was that the portion was too small. The service was attentive for the most part and it has plenty of booths if you want some privacy.
Black Salt was a wonderful balance of refined comfort. The food was very creative, a large selection of seafood and the server was knowledgable, professional and approachable. I traveled out of my way solely for dinner (I am from NYC, in town for business) and it was worth the trip. I have already recommended the restaurant to my local friends.
Black Salt no longer as wonderful as it was a few years ago. Food too heavily seasoned without nuance. Service clunky with table clearing intrusive and wait staff pleasant but not gracious. A big tab for a less then special dining experience. We looked forward to returning and were disappointed.
Wonderful service, fabulous food and great ambiance. We came here for our significant anniversary and all was done to the "T". These folks know how to take care of you for that unique occasion in your life. I'd recommend them both hands down. Great place, one that we'll come back many times more!
My wife and I both ordered seafood tacos, and we agreed that they were about B +. I ordered a soup, on the other hand, that was very good.
My wife was ill to her stomach that evening. It may not be fair to blame that on the restaurant, but you have to wonder. Henry Ryan
We've been to Black Salt several times and have very much enjoyed our visit each time. The food is inventive and well prepared. Our waiter, Tom, was engaging and provided helpful dining information. I learned things about the menu that I hadn't known before, in spite of previous visits.
I still love this place. The server was wonderful, top notch, and helped us imagine what we could order off the menu that we really wanted. We picked our fresh fish and the chef cooked it using simple preparation and it was splendid.
It’s my third time here and every time is better than the last.
Wonderful experience celebrating mine and my wife's 5th wedding anniversary. The atmosphere was lively, yet soft enough that we can enjoy each other's conversation. From the moment we sat down to the moment we paid our bill, the service was extremely flawless and impeccable. Our server was attentive and not once was there a delay during each course. The food was phenomenal. My wife and I enjoyed the paddlefish caviar, and the oysters from Washington, Massachusetts and Maine. All were quite exquisite. We also enjoyed the halloumi board as a second course. Our third course featured the NZ John Dory and the big eye tuna, which we both highly recommend. Lastly, we delighted on the chocolate peanut butter crunch cake for dessert. Overall, our dining experience was exceptional and will definitely return in the future. Not to mention the personalized menu they gave us, which we took home!
This is the place to go for fish. It's fresh and they know how to cook it. Salads are inventive. Desserts are good. Excellent wine. It's a bit on the pricy side, but good fish is costly these days even in the grocery store so if you fancy fish it will cost you to get quality.
We meet our French friends for dinner at Black Salt twice a year and always are glad we did. We were once seated in a crowded, noisy back room but this time we were in a booth not as far back. The food was all delicious, especially the grilled Halloumi board we shared, the tuna entrée and the delicious special brownie dessert. My only suggestion is to include a flourless chocolate cake on the regular dessert menu.
