Lovely restaurant and great food. Calamari appetizer was superb (but rich!) as was the heirloom tomato salad. Halibut and crab cakes also terrific. This looks from the street like a neighborhood fish market, which it is, but the back dining room is a secluded delight.

BlackSalt was a perfect intimate dinner date location. My wife especially appreciated the freshness of the seafood we ate, and I wholeheartedly concur. It was worth every penny (which was about $275 for two of us but we ate three courses and drinks).

My girlfriend and I dined at Black Salt Monday night - food, service, presentation were all excellent . The waiter and staff were attentive without being intrusive. My girlfriend had the haddock, which was wonderful. I had the crabcakes, and they were also very good. For desert we had the pina colada - and it was amazing. Coconut mousse in a thin chocolate glaze, mango sorbet, slices of glazed banana - we are still talking about it.

The chef is heavy-handed with "tart". The bleu cheese on the apricot salad was way too tart. The dressing on the heirloom tomato salad was too tart. The cookies in the strawberry dessert were too dry. The staff rushed our meal, but neglected our drinks. Too much dessert.

We found guests in back room loud which of course isn’t the restaurants fault. Fyi there is a back dining room! Food was amazing.

Lunch: food was slow to come out. The Wood Grilled Calamari was drenched in oil and served with a heavy side sauce. Salad was OK. My lunch companions did not rave about their meals, either. Would like to give this another try.

Wow. Just wow. I've been thinking about getting here for years, and we finally made the time. What an amazing experience from start to finish. When you walk in, it's definitely a fish market with a counter and about a dozen tables/booths for more casual, drop-in dining. We had actually made a reservation (hence, this review) and were looking for a nice place in that neighborhood to have a quiet conversation with a couple people with whom my husband does business. They led us past the casual, market part of the restaurant up a few stairs into a lovely room with maybe ten tables, white tablecloths and a very Zen atmosphere. Could not have picked a better spot. The service is impeccable. In fact, we brought two bottles of wine, and the wine service is spot on. (Our server picked up the bottle of sauvignon blanc and remarked that it could be a few degrees colder. Of course, she was right and brought a bucket of ice water right away. Highly recommend the Thai coconut seafood stew. I usually don't order a whole dessert for myself, but if you order the chocolate peanut crunch dessert, you will not want to share it. It's actually extremely light, and the flavors and texture are divine. Bottom line, BlackSalt is our new, favorite seafood place.

A gem in DC. Great service, wonderful food. The preparation of our meals was a fresh take compared to other places. Proteins still maintain center of the plate. Everything was fresh and perfectly prepared. Our server was knowledgeable and prompt without being over bearing.

my problem with blacksalt is it tends to be uneven. i don't know whether they are occasionally careless or sometimes too busy. i multicourse dinner some weeks ago was beyond superb. this time the crab napoleon was perfect whereas the ipswich fried clams were fried to a nut brown, dried out, no clam bodies in the portion and served without lemon which had to be asked for. that speaks to me of a restaurant which isn't paying enough attention. it makes eating there a bit of a crapshoot.

Nice place. Good food. I just can't get passed the initial smell of "bad fish" as you walk into the restaurant. Smells like a fish market on a warm summer day. Otherwise I like the place.

Black Salt is an extraordinary seafood restaurant. I've eaten at thousands of seafood restaurants. Most were good. A few very good. Black Salt exceeds well beyond the very best. The fact is that Black Salt's menu is like no others. It reflects the work of culinary masters. A word to the crowd: If fried shrimp in a basket is your thing, then good for you - but Black Salt is not likely for you. Most of the menu items combine ingredients in a very unique way. The end result is a meal full of flavor, where every ingredient "speaks" in harmony to the palate. You won't forget the meal or night.

A quick example. I ordered the Cocoa Nib, Peppercorn & Cumin Spiced Tuna. It came with a black bean tamale, guacamole, salsa verde, arbol crema & tomatillo Mole. The combination of the rare tuna with guacamole and salsa verde created a taste that was beyond words. The only thing better than my dinner was looking over at my lovely with as she ate the Black Salt Crab Cakes. All smiles. We had a great time.

Virtually every single one of the waiters/waitresses was spectacular. They explained the menu, offered suggestions, answered questions. Indeed they took every bit of time that it took for their respective table quests to order to perfection. Our waiter was the exception. Maybe in an objective sense, he was good. Compared to the others, however, we had waiter envy. Despite the waiter, the food make up for every perceived slight.

Just a wonderful menu. Really appreciated the new seasonal dishes and the dessert was to die. Would like to have seen some more appetizer options for seasonal and cheese platter options for dessert but overall wonderful service and food!

It was not clear to me that the fish in the fish taco would be heavily breaded and fried. At many restaurants you can choose fried or broiled, which I would have preferred. Too many entries were fried.

We celebrated my parents 50th Anniversary here with a group of ten. The service and ambiance was perfect, the staff were so hospitable. They were very accommodating when we showed up with one extra person. The dishes were beautifully presented and tasted even better. Seafood was fresh and flavorful. They provided some special touches for the celebration that made the dining experience unique.

We had a highly incompetent server and decidedly mediocre food - especially the confit of tuna and the grilled octopus left much to be desired. The server had to go to the kitchen to find out what “confit” means I the context of fish (it seems to be a misnomer) and he didn’t understand that we wanted one first as a first and others as
Our entree. Everything arrived at once and the “entrees” had to go back.

The octopus and “confit” of tuna were poorly done.

All in all, a disappointing experience.

Always a treat to visit BlackSalt. This was a last minute change of plans to eat late on our 20th Wedding Anniversary and the staff was very nice in making it best as can be on short notice. Food is always fresh and well prepared. Just never enough of it! Cheers and bon appetite!
