Black's Bar & Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
Big fan of BlackSalt and looked forward to first visit to your Bethesda restaurant. Food was excellent. Two things of note. There is a strong smoke smell that wafts through restaurant and my hair smelled of it. That noticeable. Also, service not on par with BlackSalt. The value was ranked lower here despite good food. Smoke smell and mediocre service doesn’t balance the value equation. Needs work.
Poor service. Bartender failed to place order for oysters and when reminded 1 hour later, shrugged it off as “oh, I forgot”. No ownership for poor service. Food was slow in coming and waited over 1.5 hours for table despite being reassured that it will be another 15 minutes.
We booked a table for brunch, expecting the extensive and delicious options offered just 4 months ago, a raw bar and a hot food bar with pancakes, waffles, omelettes prime rib, salads, etc. as well as a great desert table.
We were sadly disappointed that the brunch buffet was discontinued. Instead there was a limited raw bar for $35 per person and a separate brunch menu. Not at all what we were expecting.
Keep in mind when heading out for brunch. A lot has changed.
Enjoyed the attractive dining room and the service was very good. The food was good but not great because it just didn’t have flavors that made me say, “Wow, I have to come back and eat this again!” I will try again because I liked the interior and the service. My cocktail was unique and tasty but tiny — I’d like a bigger bang for my buck.
This place used to be EXCELLENT. However, they just completely gutted their menu and lost 90% of what made them great. It’s a shame they sold out to similar menu concoctions/pairings as the surrounding completion, but they lost a few customers for life. Get back to the basics!!! Fancier isn’t always better!
We are in the restaurant business and thoroughly enjoyed dining at Black's. My wife and I started off at the bar during happy hour with two lemon drop martinis. I was happy to find Oysters and was surprised that the only name that was given them was "Chesapeake." After
looking at them we determined that they were Choptank Sweets. I ordered two to try but was told that there was a minimum of six required. It seems that the menu should clearly state "minimum of six". Other than that, our family joined us and each person was quite happy with their selection. I had the whole bone in Branzino which was excellent. The server, Victor, was excellent. I always prefer to wait until everyone is finished eating before clearing but not everyone likes to wait which I understand. All in all, excellent. Thank you.
Blacks continues to be the go to place for a successful business lunch...wonderful, tasty and right sized portions are important ...terrific fish menu. Blacks has good vibes and noise level for discussing work.. Centrally located for all the MD suburbs with ample parking next door.
Our dinner at Black's Bar & Kitchen was wonderful! We had not been there for a while and it seems very different: a step-up in cuisine and ambience. The Ahi Tuna with a 5-spice broth and noodles was amazing! We also had a dozen oysters and the selection was great: from briny to creamy and sweet. The server, Tyler, was extremely knowledgeable, professional and friendly. The most special treat was speaking to the Sommelier, Natalie. She had fantastic recommendations and introduced us to new delicious wines. Thank you!!!
Tonight we decided to cross Black's Bar & Kitchen off our list of potential restaurants we frequent. Typically we dine out about 2.5X per week in the Bethesda / Chevy Chase area. My husband had the salmon entree this evening and it was almost inedible. He ate half the fish but the sides were dreadful. It is so rare that he ever complains publicly about a meal ... but he was extremely unhappy. Unfortunately, we complained to management but they did nothing to adjust the bill. So we left there deciding to never return. Hopefully some more new restaurants will be coming to Bethesda soon that will help compensate for what seems to be increasingly poor choices.
Very disappointed. They changed the format and took away the hot buffet and dessert buffet. They kept the raw bar, but raised the price by $10.00 (to $35.00). The brunch menu was very pedestrian and certainly not worth the price. I had indicated on my OT reservation that this was a birthday celebration and the restaurant paid no attention to that. I used to go there every few months; I will likely not be returning. Among other things, if only one person wants the raw bar, it throws the timing of the whole meal off. One person finishes the brunch from the menu and has to sit there while the other person visits the raw bar for a second trip.
I wonder who made this customer-unfriendly decision.
I hate that I have to leave such a negative review, but truly nothing other than the atmosphere
was good. The drinks were delivered incorrectly, the scallops were only cooked on one side and the chicken was so overcooked it didn't even resemble chicken. The timing of the meal was so off that we barely could get out wine with the meal. So sad, but true.
