Black's Bar & Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
What a great dining experience. The food was amazing, especially the Georgia-style mussels. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, and respectful. We were on a quick vacation tour of DC while the kids were away at Summer Camp. The power went out the evening we were there, and we couldn't have cared less. We had a great time! It's a shame that Orange County California can't embrace a real food culture like Bethesda has. Don't miss Black's.
It's pricey, and a bit "put on". Doesn't feel like a "bar and kitchen"--much more shi-shi than that. Not what I expected or wanted. Service is stiff and a tad condescending. Black Restaurant Group should take a page from the Great American Restaurant group in Northern VA.
All four of us rated the food and service as excellent, a rarity as we are very demanding in our choice of restaurants. We started in the bar which was not too noisy but still lively and moved to the dining area which was quieter. The variety and quality of the food was excellent. We appreciated the addition of local foods on the menu. The overall quality of this restaurant was notable as many restaurants have slipped a bit lately. We will definitely be back.
We went here for bethesda restaurant week. We were surprised to hear that you were not participating. According to the server we were not the only people who thought so. I can appreciate that it wasn't the restaurants fault that a website listed them in error but as a gesture of good will i think they should have offered a promotion or special.
We took my mother-in-law to Black's for her 75th birthday. The food was excellent. I had the scallops which were large and perfectly cooked. My husband and his mother had the salmon which they loved. My 10-year old son enjoyed his pasta dish which was a great deal at $5 from the children's menu. The adult meals are on the expensive side but the food is worth it.
The quality of the food was very good great balance of flavors. The ambience did not fit the food quality but I was not disappointed. We had a waitress that was training so it would be unfair to say the service was not as good as it could have been, because the young lady tried very hard.
I would return and try a couple of other items on the menu that also looked very good.
I am never disappointed and always very happy with the food especially the raw bar selections at brunch. Our server, Terry, was very funny, friendly and engaging. Another family that we referred happen to come at the same time and that was not planned.
He loves fresh seafood and was really impressed with the food and service as was his son.
Keep up the good work and we will see you soon!
This was my first time at Black's and I went for a very late lunch (reservation at 2:30 when technically lunch ends at 3) I was worried they would rush us or be out of everything as some places are when you come towards the end of a seating but they were awesome. It was really quiet (few customers on a HOT Sat afternoon) so it was nice for old friends to catch up. The food and ambiance were spectacular (and we are all foodies). A particularly novel touch was that they brought simple syrup to sweeten my iced tea so there was no spooning in tons of sugar and hoping for it to dissolve. I loved the risotto of the day and my friend thought the oysters were fabulous! We also loitered for 2 hrs and they never rushed us. Next will go for dinner!
Took my wife for her birthday and had a lovely experience. The food was first rate and creative. Of course, what's not to love about jazzed-up comfort food like truffled mac & cheese! The staff was very attentive but not intrusive. Overall, it was a very good experience and we'll be back.
Excellent food at reasonable prices, but the markup on wine is offensive. A wine that we buy regularly by the case at less than $9 a bottle was priced at $50. Most of the other wines with which we are familiar are also marked up four to five times what we are accustomed to paying at retail. We plan to seek out restaurants that have equally good food, but a more reasonable markup on wine.
Waiter was very attentive - really responsive. Little loud and crowded when we got there. Also, the greeter/hostess could have been a little nicer upon our arrival. She seemed stress. Guess that comes with the territory when you are a popular restaurant. Still, don't need to take it out on the patrons.
The food is consistently excellent. The service, however, is often hit-or-miss. I've had one waiter who was very good and I've had two waiters that were various shades of awfule. One was rude and indignant that we did not order "fast enough" and another did not order the correct food and appeared unconcerned that she ordered the wrong food.
This is my third time dining at Black's, and my experience was just as impressive as my first visit. I reserved a table through Open Table, stating in the "notes" section that it was my fiance's 30th birthday thinking that they might just provide a candle on our dessert. When we arrived and were seated, we opened the menu to discover a personalized message on it. In addition, our server immediately wished my fiance a happy birthday when he promptly arrived at our table. These details speak not only to the high quality of service we received during each visit but also to the details of the food and presentation, which are all excellent. Each visit confirms our holding Black's high on our list of special occasion dining go-tos.
After being seated, given menus and water, we didn't see a server for 10 minutes. The restaurant was not crowded, either! Finally we spoke to the hostess who said there had been a problem assigning servers and one would be with us shortly. From that point on, we had a great waiter and service was fine. But we shouldn't have had to complain when it was obvious that the part of the restaurant we were in was understaffed.
Our first experience at Black's will NOT be our last. What a beautifully decorated restaurant and the food was outstanding. Get the filet mignon...and, for those of you who like french fries, even though they're not on the menu, they have them and they were delicious! The wine portions by the glass are very generous. The two chocolate desserts we split at the table were presented beautifully and were very unique...salted caramel ice cream...wow, what a surprise...delicious and unique...have fun!
I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch at Black's Bar & Kitchen. I always look forward to hearing about their risotto of the day. This time (as last) the protien was duck breast, which was perfectly prepared. The only complaint would have been that it was a somewhat small serving of duck. That said, there were lots of mushrooms and the risotto was nice and creamy.
My family went to Black's for Father's Day. Since a buffet style brunch was offered, the menu was limited. I have some picky eaters in my family, so I was a little concerned at first, but everyone went with the buffet and loved it! Perfectly spiced shrimp, oysters on the half shell, smoked salmon, and squid salad that was to die for... the seafood was fantastic! I didn't eat any of the breakfast foods, buy my mom had a omlette that she loved. I did enjoy the cous cous with lots of lemon zest and golden raisins, and a lovely tomato and mozzarella salad. Everything I tried was truly divine. I will be going back to try dinner there sometime!
Stick with the fish. The tuna and the mahi turned my 14 year old from a kid who will eat fish if she's starving to someone who can't wait to go back for the tuna. My husband had the fried chicken, which was disappointingly non-crispy and heavy. Mini biscuits are great.
