The homemade pasta with veal bolognese was out of this world!
Been here 3 times in the recent past! Best grilled branzino ever and the oysters I had this week were terrific.
We were a little late due to the snowstorm, and the manager was trying to close early to allow workers to get home safely; however, they accommodated us for my birthday. The food was delicious and the service was courteous and prompt. First visit, but won't be our last! Everyone ordered something different and really enjoyed their choices.
The Chef's Omelette and 5 stack of walnut pancakes with Bourbon Maple Sauce was delicious. The portions were huge and I would recommend both. I was a little confused though because upon arriving they said didn't have a restaurant week menu even though it's listed Bethesda Magazine Restaurant Week from January 11 - 20, 2019..
Seafood is excellent here. We had snapper and scallops; both were well prepared and not overcooked.
Service was prompt but not hovering.
The breads are delicious.
Always have a wonderful dinner here. A tuna soba special was beautiful, delicious and fun! A party on the plate. Grilled whole bronzino lovely, caesar salad ordinary. Look fpr sleepers on the wine list.
The service is always prompt and the food is delicious. One of my favorite places for cocktails and calamari.
Great food and great service! Cali Mary and scallops were both cooked perfectly. Friend had the steak and said it was also wonderful. Mac and cheese was the right mix of crunchy topping and gooey noodles.
Staff was accommodating to a w/c and service dog.
Wonderful menu. We went for the seafood, but two in our party preferred meat. Everyone loved their meal. Nice pours on the glasses of wine. Great place to celebrate a special occasion.
The Maitre D knew my name when I arrived (it was a quiet night, but still!), and said I could pick any table I liked. The warm bread and ice water arrived promptly, and the waiter was helpful with tips and suggestions on both food and drink. The meal was excellent and we were very happy with the experience. :-)
The food was excellent, particularly the branzino and the steak. They also serve a breadbasket that included some delicious biscuits. The atmosphere and decor are just ok, it seems to be missing something in that respect. I would recommend the restaurant for it's food though. The waitstaff could use a bit more polish, but everyone was friendly.
Fish stew, scallops, and salmon were outstanding choices. Service was exceptional.
Great service during an early dinner on New Year's Eve. White bean bruschetta was very tasty, although spicier than I'd expected; assume it was heavy on the garlic. Scallop and pork belly special was quite good, as was the house-made mint ice cream - very minty and the chocolate was like ground up brownies - nice! 3 scoops is pretty generous for desserts these days, probably should have shared it with my husband!
We love meeting friends here to catch up and have a wonderful meal.
I eat out all of the time and I was excited to visit Black's. The hostesses were nice and professional and so was the waitstaff. My issues were with the food and the prices. I ordered the Oysters Rockefeller - 3 small oysters for $12. Then, I had the whole Bronzino for $33. The presentation was nice but the taste of the food was underwhelming. It was totally bland. Also, I was not offered more hot water for my $4 cup of tea. $4 would have been fitting for a pot. The chef needs to be replaced IMMEDIATELY and the prices should be comparable to the amount of food and the location. They are in Bethesda, not The Wharf.
Loved it!!! The scallops were perfect!
We certainly enjoyed our evening
I ordered a dish from the specials and it read “lump crab cakes” and since I eat crab cakes all the time, I notice that the meat was lumb crab meat but the dark meat which is less expensive.
The misleading information is not acceptable. I felt betrayed and that is not a good felling - Will never go back
Birthday. Lunch express menu was great. Excellent value.
We were celebrating my husbands recent graduation and wanted to try a new restaurant. We arrived with pretty high expectations. Almost immediately, I was underwhelmed by the restaurant. Décor is so so, nothing noteworthy. Our server became openly hostile when we didn't order a bottle of wine and appetizers. His overall demeanor was haughty and superior to us. It was a real turn off. The food however was good. My steak was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and my husbands scallops were delicious. The bussell sprouts were the only pleasant surprise.
Decent service. Place just looks like it’s needs some TLC. Shows better online than in person.
Good food and service was overshadowed by the smoky smell from the wood burning oven. My clothes reeked of smoke when I left.
As usual for Jeff Black, the food is outstanding and supports local organic farmers. The mushroom soup was great, the seafood stew so delicious. Comfortable seats, especially in the booths. Friendly staff. All in all, just a great treat.
We went as a party of 3. I love mojitos! It my top three go to drink. There's really was the best in 100 miles. The Gouda Mac &cheese was to die for. The Canadian oysters as well as their house oysters were Yum! Only negative is the dinning side does not have happy hour specials. I would recommend the dinning side for any special occasion, but if you're looking for a friend night out with the girls like I was you definitely wanna sit on the bar side.
The fried calimari starter tasted like it was cooked in stale oil and the seafood stew was under seasoned. Mediocre food experience at best.
this is another Black's restaurant that I can strongly recommend -- love being able to hold a conversation, enjoy food made from scratch, and have good service.
food was mostly really good - grilled branzino, sides (mushrooms and cauliflower), and barbecue chicken were all super yummy; however, the fish pieces in the seafood soup were dry (perhaps but doubt it was bc i requested they leave out the butter).
all in all -I'll be back!
We always like it here. The food is really good and it is very well located.
Perfect place to celebrate a birthday!!!
An old favorite that we revisited after several years. The food was excellent, and we were reminded why we liked the place. We'll be back!
As someone who practices a strict Keto Diet, the menu offered items that fell within the protocol made with real ingredients. I had the scallops sautéed in butter, no potatoes and the mushroom mix sautéd in butter. If only they had a keto friendly dessert.
The waitress was attentive, personable and spent just enough time at the table. The sommelier was delightful and informative. Their wines are not inexpensive but the Pino Noir we got was divine with our meal. Two of us ordered the Branzino special and it was truly amazing; served on a large plate with two filets atop a bed of spinach and white beans. Half was more than either of us could eat.
When we first arrived the bar crowd was a bit louder than I would have liked but after settling in and being served it was forgotten. All-in-all it was a lovely evening and I am anxious to return.
Average food except for raw bar. Ordered the organic salmon. Blah taste. Only the raw bar food seemed good. Small selection of other dishes and the taste wasn't worth the money. Decent ambiance, great location (right next to parking garage in downtown Bethesda). Friendly server. But if you want good food, I'd pass. Wasn't that memorable.
excellent raw oysters and the fried oysters also. Great burgers, salad (kale) and corn bread. Mojito very good too.
Our server was really great and very helpful. We also appreciated the suggestion of your sommelier, the wine was just right.
Good food but low on ambiance
Great seafood, awesome ambience
Apples on the apple pie dessert needed less skins. Pie crust was soft and forgettable.
Not much for a Vegan.
Went there for a quiet birthday dinner. Food was delicious; service was great. Cute Happy Birthday dessert plate.
Black's is always good. One of our go-to restaurants when we visit Bethesda.
I have had lunch at the restaurant several times - and dinner - although not for a couple of months. The pricing is very high for a restaurant of this type. It is not a place to "just come" to meet friends.
