Fantastic menu. Great service. Comprehensive menu, but the seafood is their strong suit.
Blacks was perfect. Just what we were looking for in having dinner with friends
Great place for a date.
Awesome! Service was wonderful.
Our server was unattentive/spent too much time chatting up people when ordering. We had to request our check more than once so we could make it to Strathmore on time.
One of our diners ordered a fillet bistro (steak). It was extremely chewy. I would say the "take away" from the experience was do not order beef, i.e., stick with fish.
The tagliatelle special was excellent as were the scallops enjoyed by my friend. Have never had a bad meal here. I recommend it highly.
Wonderful food and service!
We were seated promptly. The server was timely and attentive without being overwhelming. I liked how we were taken care of by many people. The menu options were just enough—shorter is better for me. The sizes of the dinner dishes we ordered were generous—we are satisfied without appetizers. The only thing I noticed was there were no vegan options. But a great place, all together.
Enjoyed the meal and wine. My date was impressed with quality of service. Overall a fine evening.
Great location in Bethesda. The parking garage is next door. The service was exceptional. The wait staff was very attentive. This was my first time patronizing the restaurant and I wasn't disappointed. We sat outside for our business lunch and it helped to keep the meeting light and carefree. Our server Matt was great and his recommendation of the risotto did not disappoint. I would definitely visit again.
We ate outside and it was lovely.
I’be been here twice and really like the food, but the service was terrible yesterday. The waiter was really nice, but he was overwhelmed. Our food came out in a moral time frame, but when we were seated, it took forever to get even asked about drinks (Just iced tea), and we were never offered refills. We got our salads (our entrees), and the food was good. But half way through, we asked for bread and didn’t get it until after we finally got our check, about 30 minutes later. We had exactly and hour and twenty minutes from arriving at 12:20 to needing to leave at 1:40. We informed our waiter of this and were still pressed for time. I like to take my time and don’t like to feel rushed or like they are trying to move you through a restaurant like this too quickly, but a business lunch should be easy to get through in an hour. Seriously reconsidering this as a lunch spot on a workday.
The bar staff continues to disappoint as the rest. Time to step it up.
The only comment to make was the server gave us the wrong menu then he gave us the corect menu after we made selection. He did not mention or offer happy hour menu.
Brunch was excellent! The raw bar is amazing loved the tuna tartare, the oysters and the muscles. The peach ginger bellini is delicious!
The food was good - interesting and the kitchen did a good job. But the menu is quite limited and the prices are very high. The composed plates are a better deal than the a la carte menu. We were there when the restaurant was quite empty, so it was easy to talk. With the hard surfaces, I think it would be noisy at a busy time.
I wouldn't rush back unless I was in the mood to spend an above average amount for a slightly better than average dinner.
Overall very good. A bit noisy, and very busy so during the early part of the dinner conversation was hard
Glasses of wine and beer were liked by all. We all enjoyed our appetizers and salads. Main courses were delicious! We would return for another special occasion!
This is my third visit this year, 8th overall by my count. Happy hour is worth it for the oysters BUT ITS PACKED. ALWAYS. Consequently, we sit in the dining room. The tenders of the bar are pre-occupied with the happy hour crowd and just keeping up, and in all of my experiences, the quality of the cocktails suffer, and are just meh. $15 for a 3/4 full Beefeater’s martini. Wine starts at $13 for an 8 oz pour. I believe these approach DC prices but maybe this is the standard now in Bethesda as the bar is raised by the competition with Woodmont and Passionfish.
Service is very good. The menu is primarily seafood and very good. I’ve not had a beef entree here. Noise level is active.
The field green salad looked past its prime and had a large amount of romaine lettuce in it. We had a misunderstanding about the glass of wine I ordered which I think the waiter should have clarified when I ordered it: the oz. of the pour are listed before the price, so I was surprised to receive such a large glass of wine at twice the price I expected. The restaurant did buy the wine for us and of course we tipped on the amount the total would have been with the wine, but the waiter could have asked if I wanted a 3 oz or 6 oz pour.
Waitress suggested bourbon pork chop and it was very tender and tasty. My girlfriend had the whole bronzing and she claimed it was delicious. Don t miss this gem
Another outstanding evening with great food, tables set far enough apart that you don't feel obligated to share your food with the next table and a lovely serene atmosphere.
Very disappointing. Our waitress failed to tell us what the specials work which included a soup I would have gotten and I only knew about it because I overheard a waiter tell the people at his table. I ordered a glass of wine and it only arrived after I had to ask the waitress a second time for it and it arrived when I was 3/4 of the way through with my dinner.
They tried to serve us the wrong food twice and it took forever to get the bill. BUT, I do love their food. I, also, choose this restaurant to dine out (not just eat out), because they do not rush you. We will be back.
We had a lovely evening at Black’s. Food was perfect, patio (until the bugs and road noise got us) was appealing, service was just right, company was first rate. Thank you.
Great place to enjoy a few cocktails at happy hour. Food is delish and service is excellent.
Happy hour menu is good value !! Service was good, ambiance great.
Black's has a select but eclectic menu. The food was very good and worth the prices. They are best for steak's and seafood. This visit I tried the Rockfish. Very well prepared, in a broth, with a fusion of traditional and Asian vegetables. Pricey but a good value.
I had not been to Black's in a while. The remembrance was better than this visit. Our rather simple dinner got hung up in the kitchen for about 45 minutes. The Bistro Filet requested to be medium rare was medium--took away from the enjoyment. The white wine was warm. Wine by the glass did not seem exceptional--but definitely was pricey.
I liked it. We should have eaten outside at the Rose bar though! We ate inside and the atmosphere was just ok. Our waiter was nice but forgot about us a few times (my husband's pint of beer was empty for a while). The mussels were AMAZING. Best we have ever had. Thai mussels with the coconut milk and cilantro. I would definitely return just for those! I got the fish (Dorade) and it was delicious - the peppers alongside, it was divine. I found a tiny bone in the fish though... but all good after that. Black's is expensive but worth it for a nice night out. Next time we're eating outside in the fresh air!
we ordered featured chef special whole dorade fish. Waiter did not let us know it would not be fileted in kitchen, but it was irrelevant because when we cut into the whole fish, it was not fully cooked -- very red/pink inside. Waiter took away and returned with only "apologies from chef", "what else do you want?". No reduction on the bill, no nothing.
Rest of food wasn't all that great either, considering each entree ended up being about $38/40 with sides.
Great food, very well presented and prepared. Waiter provided ample service. The vast wine selection satiated my desire for a charcoal/smoky wine. The dessert menu was plentiful as well. I had a fantastic experience.
We went to Blacks for the first time with a group of four and sat on the outdoor patio. It was a delightful location and pleasant meal with friends. From the started, through the salad and main course everyone was very pleased. Cudos go especially to the duck and pork dishes.
This restaurant consistently delivers great food and service, but at a premium price. Oyster lovers will enjoy the selection of shellfish. Parties with vegetarians, pescatarians and meat lovers will be able to pick tasty dishes without a problem. Particularly good for fresh fish and pasta (in addition to their steaks).
It was the first time I went there and was disappointed both the the slow service and lack of attention to the details we’ve asked for. We went for lunch, arrived early 12:00 sharp, the restaurant was half full the entire time, but the food took more than one hour to arrive, and my friend’s burger did not come as she specified. They offered to remove her meal from the bill. They definitely need to improve their game.
Great place. Nice atmosphere. We were 6 friends and we sat at a side small room (to the right of the entrance). Once another party arrived (4 people), it became noisy and unpleasant. Luckily we were towards the end of our get together and we left. Other than that, it was great. Good food, service, ambiance.
Just was not impressed with the service or meal. I felt like we were ignored on Thursday night. We were a table of five that was seated around 6:30 and it seemed like others who came after us were getting their food orders faster than us. There was no explaination of the $50 shellfish appetizer and it was very hard to get the waiter’s attention.
Not sure I would recommend or come back.
I think the food and wines are overpriced for what you get. The options for starters are limited. The food is good, but you can easily spend $100.00 per person, for a modest meal, with just a glass of wine.
My excellent $22 three- course luncheon special: very tasty bruschetta, flavorful and filling seafood stew, terrific tiramisu. Very attentive and accommodating service, handsome dark interior, spacious seating (and attractive napkin rings!) Metro accessible and nearby public parking lot.
