Black's Bar & Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
The opportunity for having just the seafood bar at Sunday Brunch is wonderful. We totally enjoyed it and it was all tasty and fresh. I hope it continues to be an option. We will certainly be back to do it again. The variety was great and just varied enough to compliment the oysters and clams on the half shell.
We have been going to Black's for their brunch for the past few years to celebrate the new year. We were a bit disappointed to see that they have eliminated their buffet brunch and replaced it with an a la carte brunch. For some reason, people around us seemed to be getting their food, finishing their meal and leaving before we even got our first course. I usually like the restaurants in the Blacks' chain, but I won't be going back for brunch anytime soon.
My friend arrived a few minutes before me and the hostess was very accommodating and sat her according to her preference. When I arrived, I was delighted to see her sitting comfortably at what we both agreed was the perfect seat. Our server was attentive and friendly. I especially appreciated how she wiped the wine ring (left from my glass) from the table as soon as she noticed it. The food was impressive and presented/arranged beautifully. Dinner was amazing. We left and went to a concert nearby and decided to return for dessert. Although it was only 30 minutes til close, the hostess received us with a smile and our next server was just as great as the first. Definitely enjoyed Blacks. I hope to return soon.
Blacks has been something truly special since they redecorated the restaurant and redesigned the menu a couple of years ago. Whether you are a fan of a juicy burger in the bar, a fresh salad with rich soup, artisinal cheeses and home-made mini-cheddar biscuits, or one of the fine steak or seafood dishes, Black's is a lovely dinner experience....and I have not even talked about the yummy red wines.
This is my favorite special occasion restaurant. This time though, the experience was a bit below par.
Oysters always a treat. We live in Virginia Beach now and only see the taste impaired local water varieties.
Chefs are the best.
One meal did make it from the kitchen: one dinner was absent. It was reordered and arrived about 15+ minutes later. To their credit, it was complimentary.
Pistacio crusted: did not see any on 3 steaks. Powered?
Wine: the list has moved north from what I remember. VERY FEW choices below $100. I enjoy a medium priced wine (I am not a connoisseur), but would appreciate some choices in the $40-70 range (there are many fine CA & WA wines in that range).
Our dinner was superb from start to finish. The bread basket was filled with fresh bread and savory biscuits with butter. We started with oysters, delicious and expertly prepared. The mignonette was very good. Our entrees were perfectly prepared: scallops, rockfish and seared ahi. My rockfish was beautifully cooked. Not overdone and served in a delightful broth of fresh vegetables. Done but not soggy. Lightly seasoned. Yum. The other entrees were also prepared with care and attention to detail. These people know what they are doing in the kitchen. For dessert we shared the key lime pie and it was so good. Original fresh presentation, light not overly sweet filling, dabs of candied orange rind and other bits and pieces topped with whipped cream. Even the coffee was perfect. Service was charming, helpful and unobtrusive. What a gem of a place.
I had previously had a very good lunch here. But the brunch was not good. Three of us ordered the BLT and Avocado sandwich. How can you possibly botch such a sandwich. The bread and tasteless and too thick and yet somehow fell apart while eating it. No enough aioli sauce so the entire sandwich was boring; even the bacon had no flavor.
The others were okay with their meals. It does have a nice feel to it.
Service was slow.
Won't come back.
Blacks used to be my favorite place for brunch, but it eliminated the hot buffet and desserts buffet, leaving only the raw bar; it raised the price of the raw bar. It is awkward if one person chooses from the menu and the other the raw bar because the one choosing from the menu will start later and finish earlier. Overall, the a la carte menu is overpriced (as is the raw bar). May go back, but certainly not soon.
Big fan of BlackSalt and looked forward to first visit to your Bethesda restaurant. Food was excellent. Two things of note. There is a strong smoke smell that wafts through restaurant and my hair smelled of it. That noticeable. Also, service not on par with BlackSalt. The value was ranked lower here despite good food. Smoke smell and mediocre service doesn’t balance the value equation. Needs work.
Poor service. Bartender failed to place order for oysters and when reminded 1 hour later, shrugged it off as “oh, I forgot”. No ownership for poor service. Food was slow in coming and waited over 1.5 hours for table despite being reassured that it will be another 15 minutes.
