Our waiter was excellent. Good meal and good time. Enjoyed it
Too expensive for the food and drinks seeved
I specifically asked if the salad I ordered was vegetarian and was assured it was. In fact the salad had seafood in it. It’s important that staff understands the difference and can at least point it out so a diner can make an informed decision.
We had a delicious meal and good service. A great location for a date night. We ended up with a cozy corner table.
Our server was nice and kind but the food was really horrible.
I got the salmon and ordered it ‘clean’ but it wasn’t. It was cooked with a glaze (likely because they shared the grill with other meals) and tasted like wood and apples. If I’m playing $35 for a piece of fish, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the chef to know what ‘clean’ means. To make matters worse, the grilled fish was actually overdone. Ugh.
And the cauliflower. Oh my. Just look at the pic i posted. It was swimming in oil. Truly disgusting.
The only reason this place is getting 2 stars is that the bar is a great scene and the bartenders are really responsive.
The only problem was the bar area. The benches are in dire need of repair.
Great food, amazing service and terrific atmosphere - a Bethesda gem that I enjoy coming back to every year on my annual trip to town!
dependable place to dine. only complaint: the pour of the prosecco was skimpy. Oysters raw and cornmeal crusted were excellent. Caesar salad a good size and delicious (except the fried anchovies). Burgers great!
Drinks were weak
Once again Black's exceeded expectations. The grilled calamari was the best I have had in a very long time and the Shrimp and Grits was the best ever. My partner's scallop risotto was incredible too.
Everything about it was PERFECT! Megan was the best, Especially her wine knowledge. We thoroughly enjoyed everything from beginning to end. The surprise dessert treat was a nice bonus.
Amazing! Branzino was great, as was the Akashi NY strip.
Very good food, good alcohol selection, well prepared and presentation. The value is rated 4 stars because it is pricy although for good reason and I cannot make this place as my everyday’s “go-to” bar.
Service was excellent, salmon was very cooked and the cheesecake a must
Only one suggestion: nicoise salad needed more green beans and potatoes
Time to put some money into the restaurant and what happened to the days of professional food servers who created you by name, left the wrinkled, untucked shirts at home and actually cared about creating a great dining experience? Having just returned from the wine country in California, there are dozens of quality Chardonnays that you can still charge double the retail cost and stay below three digits in price. Your losing ground in our ten years if visiting.
I was a guest at a business dinner at Black's Bar & Kitchen. Everyone's food was delicious and one colleague, from New Orleans and an avid seafood fan, exclaimed, "This is the best salmon I have ever eaten." I also ate the salmon and agreed it was stupendous. So well prepared, in fact, that I returned the next night (still on a business trip) with a local friend, and ordered it again. The server from the first night remembered a specific, weird food allergy I have, and provided equally gracious service for this leisurely meal. Apparently you can't order a bad meal there. I also appreciated that they had not one but two varieties of cider, one very dry (as I like it) and served at the perfect temperature. The only complaint we had was that the air conditioning was too cold and we were all uncomfortable - even the men. I wore a sweater the second night and was fine.
Had a great meal.
Good service, simple, but tasteful menu
Excellent service; very fresh fish
The paella was too spicy, loaded with butter, and had very little sausage, fish or chicken as in a traditional paella. The chef needs to learn how to make this dish. Also the food in general is too peppery. We like spicy food but prefer to not be surprised by loads of pepper in dishes that are supposed to be milder.
Our server was very attentive. The oysters were excellent. We also enjoyed the mussels. They could benefit from more choices from the "wood smoked grill". The seafood stew was not a hit, but other dishes were excellent (Branzino). The hard surfaces on the tables and floor make for a somewhat noisy background.
The restaurant was very loud, the food was just ok and the service was not great. I asked for the candle right above our table to be lit 6x since it was dark and our kids were trying to color during dinner. The candle never got lit and it took forever to get silver wade, water refills and appetizer plates.
The risotto was over cooked
Everything was great - delicious food and excellent service.
Always such an amazing atmosphere, the food phenomenal
Great chicken sandwich with hummus appetizer! Thank you for the excellent food and wonderful service. This is one of our go to places.
the menu was less and the costs more than I expected. Very nice atmosphere and great quality food, though.
Made a reservation but chose to sit at the bar outside which was energetic and fun for a Friday date-night. The drinks were incredible and the food was ok.
There is a soft double cream brie cheese on the charcuterie board that is honestly the best i've had in my life. I asked what cheese it was, even just the brand/farm it came from and they wouldn't tell me. The waiter claimed he asked the chef but then forgot on the way back to our table. This wouldn't be a huge deal but apparently they change the cheeses on the charcuterie board weekly. I still need to know what cheese that was, it keeps me up at night and I am furious that I may never eat that cheese again because of this silly restaurant.
Additionally, my boyfriend and I found it overpriced. For two appetizers and two drinks it was $68, not including tip. The charcuterie was the star of the show, but nothing on it was made there and they charged $25 for it, which is not outrageous, but also not moderately priced. Our other appetizer was the grilled calamari which was truly terrible. It just tasted like grill and needed lots of sauce to make it palatable.
Thank you for the kind words on our Open Table review, please pardon our server's narrow minded thought process, the cheese you enjoyed that night was Brillat Savarin Brie - cheese maker Henri Androuet -- Regards Black's Bar & Kitchen
The food and service was outstanding! Thank you for a fantastic experience.
This was our second visit and both times the service and the food were outstanding! I highly recommend this restaurant. The fish is wonderful and the vegetable side dishes were unique and delicious!
It was awesome
Service - great!
Appetizers: mussels, Calamari and oysters - very good.
Entrees: my husband order the large steak off the menu. It was $45., came with nothing. Was not a good value at all. Thin and not best cut. He eats anything and wasnt happy.
The filet dish was ordered by two. It came with mushrooms, asparagus and potatoes. Fair price, serving was fair and tasted good. Both would reorder dish.
Special seared Ahi tuna. Good portion, but was seared a bit too long and not the best cut. Flavor was good.
Dessert.., ok here is the kicker. Birthday celebration. My son ordered a single scoop of ice cream. They prepared a plate with 3 scoops and scribed in chocolate happy birthday. Nice right? $$$ later.
The homemade peach cobbler/pie dessert was excellent.
Would I return, not for dinner or bday celebration. Appetizers and drinks, yes.
Good friend & staff was very accommodating when we needed an additional place setting. Will return!
Sat outside with our dog. Everyone supper nice and very accommodating. Always a nice experience
Met my friend for diner and was super happy with food (Addi's mussels always), service and drinks. Mid week dining room was half empty and we were able to have a conversation. Lovely!
Very enjoyable brunch. Food was excellent and fresh. One of our party had the buffet and it looked great. I had a la carte and it was delicious. It was very relaxing on a Sunday morning. Service was attentive but only there when you needed them.
My wife and I moved to Washington about three years ago. We eat out fairly often at least twice a month, and I can say without reservation that this was the most delicious meal we have had. We shared an order of fried calamari for a starter and then my wife had a Cesar salad and the mussels. I had the salmon. The salmon was cooked to order exactly as I requested, a little bit more than medium. The mussels are in a delicious broth and it had some spice to it. Some fresh bread comes along for dipping.
We opted to eat inside, because the outside bar scene was to our ears too noisy for a quiet meal with conversation. Inside it was not too crowded and there is plenty of space between tables.
The service was also excellent. The calamari came out quickly along with two kinds of bread and butter. Just a few minutes after we had finished the calamari our main courses came to the table piping hot.
We didn't have room for dessert, but we will definitely be back.
Food was great. Bar staff made delicious cocktails. Glad the restaurant is open late.
