Would love to have some candles on the tables —our table was so dark. Huge portions and food is good—appetizers and salads better than entrees.
There is no good reason I can find to go here for Sunday Buffet Brunch. The hot portion of the buffet is lackluster and without quality. The meat (which was advertised as a better quality than delivered) was all fat with a small amount of meat. The omelet station was incapable of making a fully cooked omelet. Both tries were watery in the middle. From a health perspective, it is probably not a good idea to place the knife for the sliced beef in the same container with the utensils for the omelet station. Of course,if you want to check how cross contamination works, it is a great science experiment, but not a good restaurant strategy.
The extra charge for the cocktails is generally warranted, but only if you are able to get the waiter to stop long enough to reorder. No matter what you order, for $35, $45 or $60 count on paying extra money for orange juice--$5 extra. Bad move Blacks--it is breakfast. But you can have all the coffee you want.
The raw bar is there, but surprising. Why, for brunch, although it is not I guess what you wanted to do (restaurantor), do you not have a bagel to go with the salmon / lox. It would have been nice and it was great lox. Based on what people were ordering/taking, shrimp, lox, salmon and clams are the favorites.
One of the reasons I am writing this review, is that for the seven tables that came for brunch on Sunday, the management was disinterested in seeing how people were satisfied. Those who seemed happiest were those who ordered from the menu for $15 and had directly cooked food rather than something in a warming tray.
The choices in Montgomery County is extensive and based on how few people came to brunch here, the word is out --do not come here. Let me be your friend and encourage you to go elsewhere. Please, for your sake and to send a message to this restaurant, go elsewhere. It was not enjoyable and not worth the $130 for two people. We struggled to find anything worthy of putting on the plate.
We celebrated the birthdays of two friends.
When we arrived, the restaurant had smoke coming from the kitchen. It was unpleasant. The waiter did not apologize and it took us to bring it up for them to apologize.
The rockfish I ordered was burnt. It tasted bitter.
The price was high.
I will think twice before returning.
Some of the best servers ever...incredible attention paid to us throughout the meal. Waiter was really well-informed as to the nuances to the menu. Food was good, served perfectly. A great restaurant!
The food was delicious. I had the beet salad appetizer. The salad was fresh and nicely dressed. The seafood stew was nicely prepared. The seafood was perfectly cooked. I took some of the stew home and it was even better the next day. My husband had the calamari and we loved it. It was tender and seasoned well. He liked his pork chop, but should have taken the server's advice to get it cooked medium, not well. The mac ad cheese was creamy and the gouda cheese in it gave it a great taste. The purple sweet potato pie was great too and not too sweet. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. I will definitely be coming back. The scallops looked great and I plan to get it the next time.
Great food and service
Everyone at my table thought the food was outstanding. I had the tuna sandwich and it was SO good!!
Excellent meal. Their seafood is outstanding and fresh. Grilled calamari was superb!
Excellent service and food
Food was poorly prepared and not consistent with the quality that I ordered. Little effort was made to resolve the problem.
Fantastic meal. Expensive but you get what you pay for. Would absolutely go again.
I really enjoyed my time at this restaurant. The appetizers and entrees were very tasty. Our waiter seemed to be kind of annoyed with us and was not very attentive but the host and the manager were very nice and helpful.
Took friends for their first visit and it was a home run. Cocktails with Cannoli bruschetta and oysters were a great relaxing way to start. Steak, and salmon were main dishes. Food great flavors , cooked and prepared perfectly. Staff and service always on their Game!
Our party of four enjoyed the fried calamari for appetizer. I had a nice time'eating my
crispy shrimp taco and my oysters on the half shell. Black's Bar and Kitchen is the only
place where I feel that it is safe to eat raw oysters. My wife loved her veggie omelet,
and the the dessert, which was sweet potato pie with ice cream. One member of our party
liked the seafood gumbo, while his wife chose the hamburger sandwich.
Excellent soup. Friendly service. Love Black’s for lunch and happy hour. It can be noisy at dinner.
Dark during the day inside main dining room as service curtains and storage area block the front windows. Server was great and on top of it all. Brunch buffet sporadic in refilling the stations.
I had a la carte entree, which was fine.
The waiter asked us for our IDs but didn’t ask the next couples sitting beside us. Cos we are blacks and the rest whites. Awful profiling. Annoying
Always enjoy a Black's restaurant; 5 stars. Excellent food & service.
Our waiter was excellent. Good meal and good time. Enjoyed it
Seafood stew was outstanding. Oysters were fresh, varied and outstanding. Wine discount was impressive
Too expensive for the food and drinks seeved
I specifically asked if the salad I ordered was vegetarian and was assured it was. In fact the salad had seafood in it. It’s important that staff understands the difference and can at least point it out so a diner can make an informed decision.
We had a delicious meal and good service. A great location for a date night. We ended up with a cozy corner table.
Our server was nice and kind but the food was really horrible.
I got the salmon and ordered it ‘clean’ but it wasn’t. It was cooked with a glaze (likely because they shared the grill with other meals) and tasted like wood and apples. If I’m playing $35 for a piece of fish, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the chef to know what ‘clean’ means. To make matters worse, the grilled fish was actually overdone. Ugh.
And the cauliflower. Oh my. Just look at the pic i posted. It was swimming in oil. Truly disgusting.
The only reason this place is getting 2 stars is that the bar is a great scene and the bartenders are really responsive.
The only problem was the bar area. The benches are in dire need of repair.
Great food, amazing service and terrific atmosphere - a Bethesda gem that I enjoy coming back to every year on my annual trip to town!
dependable place to dine. only complaint: the pour of the prosecco was skimpy. Oysters raw and cornmeal crusted were excellent. Caesar salad a good size and delicious (except the fried anchovies). Burgers great!
We were seated in a quiet, warm area on a cool evening. The service was attentive and all food items delicious. The appetizers were so large that they could have been our meal--fresh, delicious mussels and a hearty bruschetta with prosciutto on crostini. My main dish--scallops with mashed cauliflower (I think) was scrumptious. No room for dessert.
Drinks were weak
Once again Black's exceeded expectations. The grilled calamari was the best I have had in a very long time and the Shrimp and Grits was the best ever. My partner's scallop risotto was incredible too.
Everything about it was PERFECT! Megan was the best, Especially her wine knowledge. We thoroughly enjoyed everything from beginning to end. The surprise dessert treat was a nice bonus.
Amazing! Branzino was great, as was the Akashi NY strip.
Very good food, good alcohol selection, well prepared and presentation. The value is rated 4 stars because it is pricy although for good reason and I cannot make this place as my everyday’s “go-to” bar.
Service was excellent, salmon was very cooked and the cheesecake a must
Only one suggestion: nicoise salad needed more green beans and potatoes
Time to put some money into the restaurant and what happened to the days of professional food servers who created you by name, left the wrinkled, untucked shirts at home and actually cared about creating a great dining experience? Having just returned from the wine country in California, there are dozens of quality Chardonnays that you can still charge double the retail cost and stay below three digits in price. Your losing ground in our ten years if visiting.
I was a guest at a business dinner at Black's Bar & Kitchen. Everyone's food was delicious and one colleague, from New Orleans and an avid seafood fan, exclaimed, "This is the best salmon I have ever eaten." I also ate the salmon and agreed it was stupendous. So well prepared, in fact, that I returned the next night (still on a business trip) with a local friend, and ordered it again. The server from the first night remembered a specific, weird food allergy I have, and provided equally gracious service for this leisurely meal. Apparently you can't order a bad meal there. I also appreciated that they had not one but two varieties of cider, one very dry (as I like it) and served at the perfect temperature. The only complaint we had was that the air conditioning was too cold and we were all uncomfortable - even the men. I wore a sweater the second night and was fine.
Had a great meal.
Good service, simple, but tasteful menu
Excellent service; very fresh fish
