BlackFly - St Augustine
Great food. My favorite restaurant in St. Augustine.
Decor is 2000 era chic, with abstract marine life art and quite possibly the largest collection of free form suspended track lighting outside of Home Depot. With a wood panel ceiling and concrete floors the noise level is high. Most tables are tables (not booths) but seating is comfortable.
We had a solid 15 minute wait before a server (Daisy) was even able to acknowledge the table. It appears the hostesses seat waiters on an “up” system. In an “up” system, waiters get seated in a rotation as parties arrive, rather than being assigned a set grouping of tables (a “station”). As a result, servers end up being spread out all over the restaurant and criss crossing each other. In addition to being inefficient, it also causes multiple servers (who aren’t yours) to walk quickly past customers waiting to be greeted, apparently with blinders on. For hostesses, Up Seating is super simple, requiring zero actual critical reasoning skills.
Station seating allows servers to easily cover multiple tightly grouped tables, but requires smarter host/hostesses in order to fairly spread the customer load evenly to every server. The hostesses were hard working, handling seating, clearing and resetting tables, and serving water. If there was a front of the house manager I didn’t see one. It seemed like the poor hostesses were running the place.
My wife ordered the scallop entree and I chose the coconut split lobster tails. Despite the initial delay in being greeted, once the order was in the food was prepared and served reasonably quickly. Fresh baked bread made the wait tolerable.
The food itself was excellent. Very well prepared and presented. Among the best meals we’ve had in St.Augustine. You can tell when a restaurant is chef-owned, because the front of the house is an afterthought but, if he or she’s any good, the food more than compensates.
My suggestions: assigned stations, dimmer lighting, sound attenuation panels.
Excellent food great service
Been there many times. Its definitely a high end restaurant but delicious.
Everything we ordered, from the appetizers to the deserts were as tasty and attractively presented as you could possibly hope for. A wonderful dining experience.
Food, service and drinks very good. Noise level was awful. Had to yell to be heard . Would not recommend because of the noise.
This was our second trip tibThe Black Fly. The food and service was awesome. The food was the best we had all week. We thought it was worth the long drive from North Carolina. We will be back.
It’s awesome as always,
The girls for servers are very very sweet and knowledgeable always have a smile and make you feel at home
Menu has changed selections more restricted but food is good
Wonderful dining experience. Appreciated talking to Chef Dustin & our server Jessica was most helpful. Look forward to visiting St Augustine again for another great meal at Black Fly!
First time for our anniversary. An exceptional visit...awesome food ,good service and an overall very enjoyable experience.
Would recommend to anyone seeking a quality experience. See you again.
We went to Black Fly for a birthday dinner, was very nice and the food was fantastic.
I normally LOVE this We were seated in a back room that I didn’t know existed. It was a little dingy and lacked the cool artwork of the main dining room. The food was also not as good as my previous visits.
Everything was yummilicious!!!
Professional staff and wait staff. Excellent food selection. Banana bread pudding was great.
Two of us ordered the steak. It was tender and flavorful. Two of us ordered fish and were very happy with it. My Mai Tai was delicious and generous. My parents ordered aged whisky and rum and were very happy. The service was so good, I forgot everything and enjoyed the company of my family. Best restaurant experience in a while!
Awesome as always. Thanx Mike for a great restaurant
Always a wonderful meal an atmosphere.friendly and professional staff.
One of our favorite places
Outstanding food and consistently very good. Our favorite dish is the coconut lobster which is to die for.
Waitresses are cordial and accommodating.
Eat here every time we visit Saint Augustine. Food is always good.
Oustanding!!! Complete dining experience.
The flavors are explosive and well matched. My wife had the scallop dish that was skewered with sugar stalks and I have the coconut crusted lover tails. Appetizers were conch fritters and a spicy chili lime shrimp dish. The dessert was a chef made deconstructed banana split. Need I say more. Vaughan (owner) was by the table to greet us and appreciate our business.
Unforgettable dining experience.
We happened to be in St Augustine on my birthday and we chose Black Fly for dinner. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the atmosphere was lovely. The owner is an artist so many of his paintings adorn the walls. We were seated in the back bar room which was quieter and worked well for us. We started with some excellent sushi and a delicious crab cake to share. Our entrees ranged from flounder to salmon and pizza for the children in our group. Everyone was happy with the food quality and presentation. Our server was one of the best we have had for a very long time.
We highly recommend Black Fly when you are visiting St Augustine. We will be back 👍👍
50th BD celebration
This was our first time there (recommendation by friends we met there). The food was very good - the presentation of the plates was very nice. I always appreciate the owner and or manager stopping by each table to say hi and check on everyone’s satisfaction which was the case.
I felt like the ambiance/style of decor was a little stale but not unpleasant.
We look forward to returning and trying more from their nice (and diverse) menu.
Had an amazing dinner. Will definitely come back.
The food is fantastic and we loved the craft cocktails. I'm not sure what happened, maybe because they were so busy or understaffed, but it took forever for us to get our food and drinks. It took about an hour after we ordered for us to get our food and each drink order took about 15 minutes. Our waitress was very good and helpful, and the food was worth the wait if you have the time. It was also very loud, but that seems to be the case at most restaurants these days.
Excellent as always!
We were able to be here for a birthday celebration. Unfortunately it was also a graduation weekend. Our previous visits were much more enjoyable, as the ambient noise was ratcheted up several notches making conversation difficult. We realize that it is not the restaurants fault, but it did make our dinner less enjoyable. The food however was their usually outstanding fare. We thoroughly enjoyed the seafood special of the day and the salmon dinner. We will certainly be back on our next visit to St. Augustine.
There were several large parties in the restaurant, so the noise level made conversation for us very strained. My dining partner had the monkfish special, which she said was prepared well and very tasty. I had the scallops, but they were slighty undercooked and not as flavorful as anticipated. Our server was attentive and pleasant, and the manager/owner? stopped by to check on things prior to the food arriving. I have been here many times before, as I lived in the neighborhood for several years, so I do think it was an off night for them. Food and service have been consistently good in past visits.
The whole experience was fabulous ... the tuna dish is a must and seared scallops were perfect ... throughly recommend the restaurant
One of my all time favorite restaurants. Food is incredible and service always friendly.
Great menu, interesting cocktails, good food. We've been here for the fourth time and were never disappointed. Depending on big groups sitting adjacent it can be rather loud.
All in all one of our favorite restaurants in Saint Augustine
The food was spectacular. Had the special and the fish was perfectly cooked. Conch fritters were also very good.
Outstanding dining experience! Food and service excellent. The "Firecracker Salmon" and "Sugarcane Scallops" were beautifully presented and some of the best ever. Both perfectly spiced and full of flavor. Most restaurants can't cook scallops, but the chef at Black Fly nailed it! Our waitress was very attentive yet not overbearing. The noise level rose as the night progressed making conversation difficult, but this is common in most successful St Augustine restaurants? Overall a wonder experience for our 34th wedding anniversary!
Fabulous food. Party of six so we sampled each other’s food! Fabulous and delicious!! Nice portions. Highly recommend the lobster Mac n cheese,
The food was disappointing...tasteless and the chicken dish was like eating rubber. The service was non existent. The waitress was missing in action all night. We will not be returning!
Everything was great, waitress Mackayla was super sweet and accommodating. We had the buffalo cauliflower dip it was AMAZING. My lobster was cooked perfect. Thank you guys!
I had the best Ahi Tuna entree was the best I ever had in my life (and I love sushi). It was so good we made reservations for Saturday night and I am ordering it again. My wife had the sausage Asiago pizza and she said it was fabulous. This is now one of our favorite restaurants.
Celebrated our anniversary here and excellent strawberry rhubarb martini, strawberry spinach salad, pink snapper and Kaluha moose cake to die for! My new favorite St Augustine restaurant! Highly recommend! Service and ambiance were great too!
Dinner was excellent. I had the lobster and my husband had scallops. I had read reviews about the noise level but we were not bothered although the place was not completely full. Would definitely recommend!
