BlackFly - St Augustine Ratings and Reviews
We have been dining at Black Fly since their opening. The food and service is always consistent and professional. Good food at fair price points with a great staff. My only issue, on a personal level, is that the apps and entre menu is fairly static in their offerings.
First we were offered a front row view of the kitchen door when we had reservations and other tables were available. We declined and were reseated elsewhere. The noise level was such that the two of us had to shout to hear each other. While the food was locally sourced, it was so heavily sauced that one could not taste them properly.
Great if you want a loud bar scene with food. Not so great if you want an upscale dinner and conversation.
Great food and service but, we asked for a booth and did not get it. We were trying to escape the noise so we could converse while dining. It was so loud we could barely hear each other speak. Surely something can be done for noise abatement! Our perfect and beautifully presented meals helped, but we may look for another restaurant that allows us to hear.
We had an early reservation for a pre-concert dinner for 6. The service was not friendly at all. We were celebrating my husband's bday- which I mentioned when making the reservation and also to the hostess, but it was never acknowledged. When one of our party asked the server whether a sauce was spicy, she groused back "spice is relative, some people think water is spicy" and that was it. She was serving a table full of people who worked in the food service industry for years, and we were all flabbergasted! Training is lacking or maybe we hit it on a bad night, but I wouldn't recommend it, which is unfortunate because we frequently go to shows at the amphitheater and it would've been convenient.
Overall the restaurant was fine; the food was well prepared, the service attentive. Now only if they could get a bartender who knew how to make a mixed drink. One of their specialty cocktails on the menu was a disaster. I didn't think this was possible to do but the wrong proportions and a taste that in no way resembled the classic drink.
My wife and I really enjoy the Black Fly every time we go. Never an off-note in the experience. The staples of the menu are treated with care and the specials are always special. I had the three tailed fish, baked with a spiced panko coating. Just delicious. Wine list is good with extremely reasonable prices for some excellent wines. Highly recommend Black Fly whether you're visiting or locals.
Very nice place and we would go there again. The service was excellent as was our meal. We were just starting our main course when a group of 7 young people were seated next to us; they were very loud, boisterous, and used loud language not appropriate for a nice place like BlackFly. I couldn't even hear my wife across the table from me. Our server apologized and offered to serve our dessert in the bar area (which was quiet). Having a good time with friends is certainly, okay but not to the point of being an annoyance to other patrons.
This is my fifth dining experience at blackfly. I’ve dined with large groups and small. The food has always been exceptional. My friends had the scallops and I had the pork . Just talking about it makes my mouth water. Check out the energetic Florida art work.....
The food is amazing! Good wine list. This is our 2nd time dining at Black Fly. If it had been our first, we might not go back, though. The service was awful. Our waitress started out fine, we ordered a bottle of wine, an appetizer and asked for water. After the wine and water were served, she said she would bring bread - finally got the bread after our dinner come and we'd asked 3 more times. She did not stop by to check on us at all. We had to ask another waiter for more water. We poured our own wine, the service was so bad we considered not leaving a tip at all. Ended up leaving $10 just because we know they share tips with the other restaurant staff.
