About BlackFly - St Augustine
If you're looking for a seafood restaurant in St. Augustine, this unique fly-fishing themed restaurant offers daily fresh fish specials using locally caught fish that you don't usually see on most restaurant menus. The kitchen at BlackFly is a "Scratch Kitchen"; everything is fresh, as local as possible, seasonal and made to order. The menu at BlackFly includes Chop House selections as well as an extensive wine selection. Mike and Cindy, partners in BlackFly and owners of the Famous Collage Restaurant in downtown St. Augustine are the operational managers. The menu is the grand result of their combined expertise, their years of experience in bringing the best possible product to the table and the imaginative input of our talented chef Matt Brown. The restaurant is under the internationally known BlackFly Brand of Vaughn Cochran, a Florida artist who lives and paints in St. Augustine, Florida and who developed the famous BlackFly Logo.

BlackFly - St Augustine Ratings and Reviews
First time here. Doubt will go back. No major issues, but no major pluses either. In our party real hits and misses on the food preparation and quality (try to find lobster in the lobster Mac and cheese, but chicken dish was superb) Service was fine, but not exceptional. Noise level was deafening.
We were in St Augustine to see the exhibit at the Lightener museum and the Christmas light show and needed a place to eat supper. The Black Fly had excellent food; we split the twin lobster tails and the scallop appetizer. We enjoyed both dishes and had attentive and fast service. The prices were reasonable and we would return the next time we are in St Augustine.
It was one of the best meals we've had in a long time! The mahi dish was outstanding. We always eat at Collage whenever possible, but they were booked that night and decided on Black Fly their sister restaurant and were extremely happy that it worked out that way. Thank you we will be back soon.
The service and restaurant was wonderful . Food presentation was beautiful. Only thought was when we asked the the waiter questions about the dish we ordered he was not sure and had to go back and ask someone else or refer to the menu. Which made me the price we paid for the food was a little high compared to the service we received. Don’t get me wrong I loved the place but if I am paying $32 for a plate I just expected a more knowledgeable staff. Over all bill was $72 plus tip. Not drinks and we shared one desert between the two of us. Add tip and it’s $85 and no drinks.
We were here during the Nights of Lights and celebrating my birthday. Started with the conch fritters which were a little gummy and okay, not something I'd order again. We did notice the ceviche appetizer was very popular among diners. Fresh catch was Mahi Mahi, and I went w the triple, shrimp crab cake n mahi. The sauce was yummy and the shrimp and Mahi were delicious, crab cake tasted fishy and lacked a nice seared crust. Hubby went with the dynamite salmon dish, which he enjoyed but I thought was okay. Waited about 15 minutes for dessert, the banana bread pudding wasn't even warm, and coffee was cold.
We went on a recommendation of a friend. Typically we find "recommendations" to be spotty at best as no two couples share the same expectations. On this occasion, however, we were blown way. The ambiance, service and food were exceptional. Although BlackFly is almost 40 miles away we will be going back regularly.
We think it is a favorite restaurant in St.Augustine. We come here every winter for a couple of months and have tried many many restaurants. We have many that we really enjoy, but we save this one as our go to for the very best. We have Blackfly coffee cups at home , we have hats, we have t shirts.........we like it like a rock band or something........
We were the noisy ones. We had a wonderful evening. My shrimp was perfect. Our friend had salmon and he said it was outstanding. Thank you for your attention to detail in all matters. This is our second time dining at BlackFly. We would highly recommend it as a favorite dining spot.
From the moment we entered we were greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Our server knew the menu by heart and the chef is superb!! had a perfectly cooked (medium rare) Flat Iron steak with scallops, shrimp, and melt in your mouth mashed potatoes; the best meal I've had since forever. Had ad date that night and her Ahi was superb!!!! ERZ
Bartenders are best in town !
Menu has good variety but needs to be changed once in a while to represent the season.
Survived two hurricanes and bounced back quickly.
They need however check their dishwasher exhaust and Kitchen hood filters . That would improve the air in the restaurant.
We have been dining at Black Fly since their opening. The food and service is always consistent and professional. Good food at fair price points with a great staff. My only issue, on a personal level, is that the apps and entre menu is fairly static in their offerings.
First we were offered a front row view of the kitchen door when we had reservations and other tables were available. We declined and were reseated elsewhere. The noise level was such that the two of us had to shout to hear each other. While the food was locally sourced, it was so heavily sauced that one could not taste them properly.
Great if you want a loud bar scene with food. Not so great if you want an upscale dinner and conversation.
Great food and service but, we asked for a booth and did not get it. We were trying to escape the noise so we could converse while dining. It was so loud we could barely hear each other speak. Surely something can be done for noise abatement! Our perfect and beautifully presented meals helped, but we may look for another restaurant that allows us to hear.
We had an early reservation for a pre-concert dinner for 6. The service was not friendly at all. We were celebrating my husband's bday- which I mentioned when making the reservation and also to the hostess, but it was never acknowledged. When one of our party asked the server whether a sauce was spicy, she groused back "spice is relative, some people think water is spicy" and that was it. She was serving a table full of people who worked in the food service industry for years, and we were all flabbergasted! Training is lacking or maybe we hit it on a bad night, but I wouldn't recommend it, which is unfortunate because we frequently go to shows at the amphitheater and it would've been convenient.
