Sadly this little gem is closing today. It has been consistently excellent with imaginative food and excellent staff. It was my go-to restaurant for every occasion. I will miss everything about this restaurant. Wishing Jacob and Ginger the very best that life has to offer and I hope to find them back in business again in the future.
We love this place! We had a chance to treat our best friend to dinner last night and Blackboard did not disappoint. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share and they were all amazing. The staff was lovely and attentive.
It was a very special evening. Thank you blackboard!
Had some friends from out of town. Was nervous taking them here because I had never been but wanted something on the west side (they were staying in Seattle). Read the reviews and was not disappointed. The menu items were unique. The Apple Salad was yummy. The Romaine salad was very good, however, I would ask for less dressing. It was a little overwhelmed by the dressing, which, not sure if it was house made, was very good, just too much. I liked the family style serving as we all got to try all of the dishes each of us ordered. Wine list is not too extensive, but the wine we picked was quite good.
We are so sad that Blackboard Bistro is closing this month. It has been our favorite Seattle restaurant for years. Our out of town friends always want to go there when they visit again.
We came here for date night on a very hot, hot night in August. The AC, if it was on, was none existent. It was uncomfortable in the restaurant. Our server was obviously in a bad mood and it showed. She was not very helpful in making recommendations and seemed impatient with us. It was our first time there and we needed some guidance on how things worked. Our food was mostly good, although we were unable to eat much of the menu due to food sensitivities and their unwillingness to accommodate special requests. We understand it's a small shop with little room to switch things up, but our server had no recommendations to help us find something we could eat. She was short with us and rushed us along too. We had great expectations for this neighborhood eatery and had been given a gift certificate and were so disappointed. The selections we made were not terribly memorable sadly. We did enjoy our cocktails and the homemade bread with browned butter and toasted pepitas- I would come back just for that. My husband liked the aioli with the french fries. We are sad to see it close, as we would've liked to try a few more things on the menu despite this experience.
Blackboard is by far the best, most inventive restaurant in west Seattle!
I was very pleased by both the chef's innovative menu and the budget-conscious wine list. We'll be back!
Innovative menu..a little heavier for summer dining..my opinion..but great care taken and very attentive and enthusiastic service
Totally Amazing!!! This is one of those places that will get so popular it will be difficult to get a reservation so hurry up before you miss this Gem!!
The unique, upscale, rotating blackboard menu items are served family style which contributed to an enjoyable evening of sharing delicious food and conversation with friends.
I just love this hidden little gem! Everything I've ever had here was so good and surprised me how layered the flavors were!
This place was amazing. So sad to hear it is closed. The food was superb. I would follow the chef to a new location.
An enjoyable evening for our family of 4 celebrating my wife's birthday - food,
ambience, service all excellent.
Everything was great even the salad. In fact, it was one of the best salads I've ever had. Julienned apple with feta and mint or basil (can't remember which). Inventive dishes, very fresh ingredients and generous portions. I was shocked it wasn't packed on a Friday night.
Lovely, friendly staff with great recommendations for food & drink pairings, not to mention great taste in music that wasn't too loud to carry on a conversation. Quantity of food was generous, and everything was delicious! Will definitely go back!
Complements to the chef, food was wonderful. Quaint and comfortable, love this restaurant.
Excellent food and limited menu by choice. I highly recommend this restaurant but have had to wait a while for food when it was busy.
Blackboard Bistro is a West Seattle treasure and one of my favorite restaurants in all of Seattle. On my most recent visit I enjoyed black cod with roasted tomatoes and mushy peas that was so delightful that after 5 days I'm still thinking about it. My dinner partner and I also enjoyed the gnocchi with braised elk ragu. The gnocchi was perfectly cooked and the elk tender and boldly flavored. Our shared dessert was the almond cake with lemon curd. The cake was moist and the curd pleasantly tart. I certainly recommend Blackboard Bistro.
Loved the intimate atmosphere. Great food. Fun specials. Will come back again.
Wonderful meal at Blackboard Bistro. Our 2nd visit; brought friends, who thoroughly enjoyed it, too. They were very accommodating, and made the best of an unexpected kitchen problem:
the stove hood went out suddenly, so they had to edit the menu accordingly. Everything was still delicious!
Love this place!! Amazing menu that's always changing! Chef is outstanding!!!!
Service was really slow which greatly detracted from overall experience.
If I could give it a negative 5 or maybe 10 I would. The food is not bad. However, if you want to be the center of your dining experience this is not the place for you. This chef could care less what your needs are. I went there with a friend that’s a vegetarian, I am not one. We were not told that this is a family style serving (whatever that means). We ordered. Her meal came and was place in front of her. Family style? Ten minutes later my meal still had not arrived. We asked the server about my meal. She claimed it was a family style serving, and one thing was brought out at a time. We explained that we were not ordering or eating family style and asked if what I had ordered could please be served ASAP. Fifteen minutes or so later another server came by to check on us. We restated our dilemma. We were again told it was family style. Again we stated that would not work for us and explained the situation, asking that my meal be sent out ASAP. So another 20 minutes or so went by. Still no food for me. Another server stopped by to see how we were doing. We repeated our mantra. She went off to see what she could do. Ten or more minutes went by and my friend had finished her meal and I’m still sitting there with no food. I told the server to just bring a check for the drinks and my friends meal, stating we were leaving, 2 or 3 minutes later my food showed up. Are you kidding me!! I told the server we were leaving, and that I was not paying for an order that took over 45minutes to reach me. We were brought a bill with very little apology and a whole lot of – “Well this is how the chef runs his restaurant.” I sat there all evening watching my friend eating. You think they would have boxed up what they were going to serve me as a way of apologizing for really bad service. But no!! Food is good, however dinning out is not just about the food. Come on, this chef can’t accommodate diversity of needs.
Great dinner. Great service. Will definitely be back.
The small plates are creative and delicious. Be sure and try the Honeycrisp & Manchego cheese salad - delectable!
Total genius master class chef. Always consistent in creating one of a kind culinary art. A symphony of tastebud delight!
I have been to the Blackboard Bistro a number of times and come away satisfied and with rave reviews. Not so on my recent visit. The service was slow and unattentive--requesting more bread (which never arrived until a server in training finally brought toward the end of the meal) and placing beverage and food orders was a challenge. The server kept coming to the table then leaving. Our second glass of wine arrived after the meal as well though we ordered it midway through. Overall, the servers seemed very stressed and harried, and the energy in the room was not pleasant. The $23 pasta dish arrived in the largest imaginable plate with the smallest imaginable serving in the shallow "bowl within a bowl" middle. All in all, it was not a good experience, so unlike any other time at this usually wonderful restaurant. We would like to chalk it up to a "bad night" but hope they will not continue with this large plate small serving practice--laughable, and expensive.
Bring your friends and family to this innovative restaurant on California Avenue. We visited for a birthday celebration. The menu is varied and served family style. The more people in the party, the more variety you can choose. The menu changes daily and sometimes hourly as popular dishes sell out. I do not recommend the menu for picky eaters. One dish we enjoyed contained elk. Try it out.
I love Blackboard Bistro! it has become the only restaurant I want to go to. I only go elsewhere if they are closed. Make sure you make reservations to ensure you get in. I have watched many people be turned away, especially on Friday or Saturday nights. Chef Jacob is a master!
A small neighborhood gem, much like what you might find in NY or SF.
We are so sad that they closed. One of our local favorites!
This is an amazing Farm to Fork restaurant. Appropriately named as menu changes daily on the Blackboard depending on seasonal availability. A foodies dream. We make a point to eat here at least oncea month knowing new menu yet dependable quality.
It was an overall good experience. Food, service and atmosphere all delivered. I would definitely recommend it.
One of West Seattle's best kept secret. You'll not find more original or delicious cuisine over here, and I'd say it holds up for all of Seattle. Very, very good.
The service was great and the atmosphere was very pleasant. Most of all the food was spectacular.
What a wonderful find in West Seattle! Inventive menu with fresh ingredients, lovely ambience, and reasonable prices. Perfect evening escape from the dreary Seattle rain!
I just love these guys. BBB is a treasure for West Seattle, a way to get downtown quality without leaving the neighborhood. The chef is brilliant, and the wait staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful. They can be a little slow when it's busy, but that's just because everything is made from scratch. Quality is worth it.
Second trip to the Blackboard Bistro: even better than the last one. The food was delicious, original, imaginative. The wait staff was friendly and attentive without being disruptive, and we had a very relaxing couple of hours spent over a wonderful meal.
Maybe they had too many reservations show up at one time because we waited a long time for service. Once she came though, the good and service we're great! Will definitely return!
Wonderful food, exceptional service, all together the most enjoyable evening; thanks! It was my daughter's birthday and from the ease of reservation all the way through the meal absolutely perfect!
