Blackbird Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I have eaten at this restaurant a few times now. The food is consistently well prepared. We had the brussel sprouts as a starter, which were delicious. My husband enjoyed the green garlic spaetzle and we were both grateful it wasn't too garlicky! I had the rockfish and cauliflower, which isn't always on the menu. It was terrific to have another fish choice and it was excellent. My only recommendation would be to include more greenery (and maybe less cauliflower) -- it provided a welcome contrasting flavor. We'll be back!
It will be sad to see this place close, as Blackbird is far & away the best fine dining on the Oregon coast. While the food, drinks and ambiance were as good as always, the service was rather mediocre this time around. Perhaps the service staff has "mailed it in" with the restaurant closing so soon.
We have been coming here every year during our yearly stay in Manzanita. The food is always so inventive, healthy and so good! The server was so attentive and helpful and she knew the menu and food very well. We got to meet the chef and thank her for some amazing meals. Unfortunately, the restaurant is closing, just because it is time for the chef. I hope whoever takes on this special restaurant will maintain the integrity of the food and service. Thank you for an awesome 3 years of food and celebrations!
It was great to return! we were bummed to learn of the closing. such great food and a great place. i truely hope that someone picks up the reigns and keeps it going. Manzanita needs a fine dining establishment like this. it is the highlight of our trips there.
Although the restaurant claims disabled access, it is barely manageable with a walker; would be impossible with a wheelchair. Too many restaurants believe if you can get in the front door and they put up a couple of bars in the bathroom, they are handicapped accessible, when they are clearly not.
Manzanita's outstanding restaurant. We talked to one of the servers who told us it was closing or being sold shortly so get here while you can. The bone marrow is fantastic. Ask about the lamb burger. Not on the menu but they occasionally have it available. Gnocchi with shrimp was excellent. All the dishes are extremely yummy!
With a house in Manzanita, we know all too well how few really restaurants are found in this cozy beach town. Blackbird is our go-to spot for a really nice meal. Recommended: have the cauliflower appetizer - it puts a vegetable with a rep for blandness in a whole new class. And wash it down with the habanero-cilantro margarita, one of the finest cocktails I've ever had.
If I were to make one complaint it is that the menu is too short , with a small number of entree options. A more adventurous and varied menu would be a big plus, and bring us back in more often than we do now.
Enjoyed the meal. The food was well prepared, and though the selection was small, each entree seemed to be selected to provide a good range overall. The restaurant was overly warm, and quite intimate, seating wise. There was a noisy threesome seated at the bar, which put them just a couple of feet behind our dining partners and, at times, the noise they generated rose to an uncomfortable level. But that wasn't the restaurant's fault. Just be aware that seating is tight here, and you might not be more than 18" away from a total stranger and privy to more information about them than you wanted to hear, or they wanted to hear about you!
We had awesome service. The vegetarian pasta was excellent. My husband had the fish, and it was quite underwhelming (not the right thing to order there). When we go back I'm just going to order from the appetizer and salad menu, because the Cesar salad I had was great.
I studied the menu online the night before in order to prep myself and be sure that it's what we wanted. It turns out that the menu was obsolete, that what I was looking forward to hadn't been on the menu in quite awhile. The menu had two starchy entrees, rock fish (which I ordered) and a flat iron steak fit my boyfriend. The fish was boring, the beef good. Dang it though ! I was hoping to be pleased and satisfied.
We loved Blackbird! Our table was ready even though we arrived early. The service was friendly and impeccable but not intrusive. The food was glorious. My steak was cooked perfectly, which has been such an issue of late getting a rare steak, but here is was perfect. The crab cakes were sumptuous. Our favorite dish had to be the roasted Brussels sprouts. They were divine. One of our all around best meals of the last year. Bravo!
enthusiasm for Blackbird is not misplaced. easily one of the best meals i've had on the Oregon coast. somewhat lackluster service nearly overshadowed the excellent food and intimate setting. course pacing made us feel a bit rushed.
still, we will gladly return, as the food was wonderful and the space utterly charming.
My favorite restaurant on the Oregon coast. I have eaten here multiple times and appreciate the pleasant atmosphere, good service, fun people - and above all, the great food and wine at this restaurant in Manzanita. The food is creative, simple and high quality focusing on local ingredients. It is unpretentious, with a laid back atmosphere and nice decor. I love it and have recommended it to others, who have enjoyed it as well. Love the oysters, rockfish and the fresh chickpea salad among other dishes.
Blackbird is the best restaurant in Manzanita. There are other good one's, but none as consistently excellent as this. The place can get crowded and noisy. Also, it has no air-conditioning so dress casual if it's hot. Fortunately that doesn't happen much at the Oregon Coast.
I was very disappointed with the Blackbird. I thought the menu was very limited. I would rate the drinks and the bartender's creativity very high. I thought everything else was mediocre and certainly not anywhere close to the rave reviews that I had read about this place. Very disappointed.
This was my second visit to Blackbird. It's a beautiful space that was well needed in sleepy Manzanita. The service is excellent and it's clear the food is fresh and seasonal. We had a bit of a strange dining experience this time. Drinks were lovely - but all of the food we ordered, with the exception of my entree, was weird. Had cauliflower as a appetizer and it was slightly underdone and nothing special. Truffle fries were good, but again, nothing special other than the homemade ketchup, which was yummy. My husband wanted a salad for dinner and ordered the radicchio caesar- which was, I kid you not, a giant bowl of just radicchio and what appeared to be buttermilk dressing. It was $10 and inedible. My entree of prawns and greens in a bacon vinaigrette with beans was excellent- I only got through half of it, since I kind of got full on fries. I thought it has great flavor balance and was something I would definitely order again. I would recommend Blackbird for drinks and maybe a small plate or two, they have quite a large bar. I will probably have a hard time convincing my husband to come back for anything more than that.
We liked the fries and the chocolate dessert. My wife liked her steak entree; I did not like mine (rockfish), which I considered too bland, on an apparently unflavoed vegetable blend. The service was excllent. The noise level was invasive and annoying. A good restaurant idea in general, but it needs further work.
I can't recommend this restaurant, although I've been there twice in two years. The hostess made our last visit (earlier this week) an occasion to forget. The hospitality was nonexistent on her part. We had reserved a table for 2 and a table for 4, and we hopes of sitting together with our 4 kids, who were visiting from New York. We were on vacation from Seattle, about 220 miles away.
Our hostess made absolutely no effort to accommodate us, even a little. There was open bar seating next to our kids' table but that wasn't even suggested, until we realized it halfway through dinner. There was a 4 person table next to us, and available, but the hostess would not make switch. A couple next to our kids occupied a 4 person table, but that was not offered to us either. The hospitality made the dinner a one-star event for us. The food itself was good, but it was terribly noisy, way above "lively". My wife and I had to nearly shout to have conversation. On the whole, the hostess' disregard for polite request and her apparent hostility towards us made the dinner, despite the food, an event to remember for all the wrong reasons, and a place to avoid in the future.
We've been to Blackbird several times in recent years and always have had a great meal . This visit was somewhere between annoying and awful. The service was SLOW although friendly. Food came out unevenly so those who had ordered hot food like fish sat there waiting for the rest of the table to be served. Waited 20 minutes for a club soda and then had to ask a passing by waitress for it. No one loved their food although we all wanted to! Anyplace can have an off night and I hope this was the case here. Hard to recommend based on this visit.
We stopped in here while on a short vacation in Manzanita. Food was every bit as good as you get at the better places back home in Portland. Service was outstanding. Cocktails were good and they had a nice wine list. The oysters on the half shell appetizer was a little weak, but my crab cakes entree and my wife's gnocchi were both exceptional. My only complaint is the tight seating, which means you hear every word of your neighbors' conversation and they hear every word of yours.
We had a delicious dinner Saturday night .
Cocktails were fantastic: expertly prepared Old Fashioned and Daquiri, ice cold and full of flavor no short cuts.
We had the fried Brussel Sprouts which we addictive as a starter, cheese and sultana raisins with just a touch of balsamic vinegar.
The Black Cod and the Ricotta Gnocchi were ridiculously delicious. The gnocchi were light as a feather, pan seared and served with yummy carmelized onions and snap peas. This was dinner I won't forget. The restaurant is one of the best I've been to and it's amazing that it's in Manzanita it makes our vacations there extra special and enjoyable.
