The food wasn't very good and it was very pricey. Of course, if the food isn't special then it seems more pricey to you.
Delicious, friendly and just fancy enough to celebrate a special night.
The waiter was very helpful and courteous. The food was delectable. We had to get to a show and they hurried our dessert so we would be on time! I’d go back in a heartbeat.
It was not only a fantastic meal but it was a great experience.
Excellent food and service! We had a food allergy in our group and both the wait staff and kitchen were incredibly diligent and accommodating. I highly recommend this restaurant!!
We got a dessert on the house for our anniversary. Thanks, Black Trumpet!
We went here while on vacation based on a Lonely Planet Top Choice and confirmation from several locals we talked to. Some of the menu options we had to Google to find out what it was. The menu is unique, and wonderful. Plus, the building (exterior and interior) is beautiful!
This restaurant is really nice. We loved our food. The pasta with mushrooms was wonderful.
We enjoyed the bar upstairs for a drink before dinner. Definitely try the Black Trumpet cocktail. The sugar rimmer was the best I've ever had. We highly recommend this location and the cuisine.
Overall the menu, food, and drinks were creative and well prepared. The overall service at the bar prior to dinner was very good. Bartenders were excellent. Our specific waiter for dinner was very pretentious and tried to come off as a foodie or expert. Little did he know he was trying to impress a party well versed in fine dining and food prep. I give him credit for trying, and we appreciated his enthusiasm. Salads were average, Mushroom Pasta and Haddock special was very good. The Paella was dry, and could have been good if not over cooked. Desserts were good, enjoyed the homemade donuts and torte.
Recently visited for an anniversary dinner, this was the perfect location. Great wine list, wonderful food and delicious specials. Food was fresh and tasty.
Outstanding. Some of the highest quality food and one of the most creative menus I've seen since moving to New Hampshire. We drove an hour and a half each way just to come here and would do it again and again gladly!
service was one of the worst service I've had at a restaurant. our server didn't once ask us how our food was, and once he served our food we waited 40 minutes for him to even come back over, and didn't ask how anything was. it took forever to get our appetizers and food, while the table next to us who had a different server, got their after us, ordered a while after us and had their check and left before we even got our meals. If the service was better, our whole experience would've been completely different. Also didn't think the prices were worth the food at all.
Celebrated my partners birthday here. We both eat vegan and they went above and beyond to accommodate our dietary restrictions. They even gave us complimentary homemade special-made (vegan) fudge with a candle in it after I emailed giving them a heads up we were coming up from Boston for the occasion. Absolutely fantastic customer service and the food was incredible!!
Awesome as always. Still one of our favorite restaurants in Portsmouth. The food is beyond fabulous and the service is great. We continue to be big fans!
This has been one of my favorite restaurants on the Seacoast. I have been to Black Trumpet pretty regularly over many years and really enjoyed it, but over the past year I increasingly noticed the variation in the quality of food and service. And a visit on a recent weekend was no exception. I am sure the kitchen and wait staff do their best, but the owners remain absent, as they have been for a while, particularly on weekends.
Food was heavy. Would try again. Cheese selection was very good. Selections were innovative. Good desserts. Nice ambiance. Good wait staff. Street parking.
The only thing good was a $75 bottle of a French Bordeaux wine. The service was slow, the food overly spiced, the boucheron cheese course was served cold and unappetizingly and the dessert, a supposed rhubarb cake was inedible. I'm unable to recommend it for any occasion. Went there 2 years ago and also had a bad experience - should have learned a lesson!
It was restaurant week. I didn’t realize it when I booked the birthday dinner. We arrived 5 minutes early to our reservation and was told there would be at least a half hour wait. That shows poor hostess skills. (I was a hostess in a 5 star restaurant). The food was barely warm. The oatmeal dessert was cool and undercooked. The menu was limited. I thought we would have an option of ordering off the menu as other restaurants. We have been there several times in the past and had wonderful experiences. If they’re going to participate in restaurant week, they need to keep the food quality up to their usual standard. We were very disappointed.
Everything was perfect except for the bizarre noice when the dishwasher ran. The table next to us felt the same.
Was amazing to get a seat on Friday night during Restaurant Week. Great menu options. Great view upstairs.
We were very pleased with our experience at the Black Trumpet. We went for Portsmouth's Restaurant Week and selected a three-course meal. Everything was well-portioned and very tasty. I have gone to other establishments for Restaurant Week and either the portions were too small or the quality was sub-par to accommodate the prefixed rate. However, Black Trumpet did not disappoint. Quality, delicious food always. I had the potato and turnip soup to start, the haddock as a main, and a rhubarb oat bar with mango curd and hibiscus whip for dessert. I would definitely go back and would recommend Black Trumpet to anyone with culinary curiosity!
The Black Trumpet never disappoints. We have always had such lovely dining experiences whenever we come. It's in a great location, it's super cozy and the food/drinks are outstanding. Highly recommend!
Food was ok, nothing special. The service was a little slow for example our waitress upon approaching our tackle for the first time apologized for not seeing us sooner. Drink orders were very slow to arrive at the table.
Excellent ambiance, service, and food. A special place for a great meal.
Michele was part of the spirit of our celebration...attentive, considerate and humerus!
Thank you Michele.
The food, service and unique menu are always fantastic. We know we'll leave the Trumpet happy. Thanks for being consistent and one of our favorite spots.
Our favorite restaurant in Portsmouth! We will return
Wonderful dinner, tasty drinks, and intimate atmosphere made this the perfect location for date night with my husband.
Awesome as usual. Flew 1,800 miles just for dinner.
Mushrooms were meh, mussels were good, beef pave was tasty, the chef mezzo was amazing (fried squid, pork belly, and shrimp), the real star was the server and the cheese/meat plate we ordered. The kielbasa was to. Die. For. The andouille sausage was waaaay to spicy and a bit pasty (it reminded me of overly spicy tamarind candy). The bucheron was lovely. The cab sav on tap was perfect too. Cocktails were well balanced and made. Server was fantastic. Best service I’ve gotten in Portsmouth
Cozy spot in a historic section on the waterfront. The menu has small and medium plates, charcuterie (with house made meats) and dinner entrees. Good wine list. Everything was very good including Moules et Frites - sautéed muscles with fresh fries and a spicy drizzle. Friendly, attentive staff. This one’s a keeper.
My husband, daughter and I dined her last Friday and enjoyed all of our selections. Service was excellent. Wine list offered numerous options. The fish entree was outstanding as was the daily special - pork schnitzel - yummy! Very cozy and comfortable. Will definitely go back!
Great food, fine wine and excellent service - always a very enjoyable dining experience.
I often meet my daughter here for dinner as she lives in NH and I live in Maine. The food is always great with very interesting choices. Love the atmosphere and the wine choices are excellent. Never have room for dessert so can't comment on that part of the menu. Parking can be tricky in downtown Portsmouth, but not a deterrent for either of us. Highly recommend.
The Black Trumpet is one of the finest restaurants in Portsmouth, NH. It’s a cozy, intimate place on the historic waterfront. Chef Mallet’s dishes are very creative and delicious as well as intriguing. I highly recommended the Duck Breast with rye berries, white beans and citrus agridolce. Excellent!! Very efficient, friendly and helpful wait staff. Good drinks and wine list. Highly recommend it for a wonderful dining experience.
My wife and I were exploring Portsmouth for the first time. Stumbled across a sign that said "Beaver Stew", looked up and there was Black Trumpet. We were ready for a culinary adventure so we decided to check it out. Ooohhh man, it beat all my expectations. The food was absolutely amazing and inventive. The staff were all awesome and made it a really great experience. We can't wait to go back!
Loved the small plate choices and the wine list. There were some very unusual choices on the menu; everything was delicious, and when we asked for a side dish of another item's accompaniment, it was no problem. Located in the old/historic part of Portsmouth.
We enjoyed a wonderful family dinner upstairs in the more casual dining area. Honestly, the food was the best I've had in a year. We love to eat tapas style so shared a number of plates. Each item from soup, to appetizer, to the nightly special ossa bucco was off the charts. And I had my kids there. The Cab was delicious. Our waiter remembered us from a previous visit a while back. The owner came by and chatted with us. It was a great, great night.
Evan came out to greet us which was very nice! The waiter was sweet, unassuming, helpful. We both really loved what we ordered and SO appreciated the nice 'half price' gift night for farmers!
Thank you for a wonderful dinner!!
