Amazing Seafood! Just down to earth vibes. Food speak for itself. One of my favourite restaurant in the city.

The food is below average. Service is acceptable but for the price it is not really worth it.

Excellent food and efficient friendly service. The house specialty scallops were delicious and beautifully presented. The best rainbow roll ever and the grilled skews were very tasty too. An extensive menu with many creative items. Everything we had was great. There is also a huge sake list to choose from. So many tasty items we will have to come back soon to try more.

Tried a variety of menu items, and every single one was delicious! Really fast service and such friendly staff as well!

Their Angus beef sushi lunch is great taste and value.

A delicious find. We really liked the cloudy saki, sweet and yogurty in flavor, a unique drink. Sukiyaki was very flavourful. I thought the rice was soft in the aburi, which is different from other places, but maybe it was supposed to be like that? Also had the seafood ceviche on taro crisps.

Have been here many times and service levels are inconsistent. Sometimes your food arrives when everyone else in your party has finished their meals. This last visit they had 4-5 chefs and 5 wait staff and it was excellent. Usually we only see two waitresses. But on this night with 5 wait staff - They were attentive and lovely, and not run off their feet and overwhelmed by orders and customers. Food is excellent. Prices are what you expect to pay downtown.

My review is solely on the fact that we had to wait 45 mins for our food to come. If my friend hadn't reached out to our server and ask for an update, then I think we would've waited even longer. I think our server forgot to 'Send' the order and only realized it when my friend asked. She did offer some free drinks but it definitely left a bad taste and was an unfortunate first experience.

The food was beyond compare and exceeded our high expectations.

My wife and I ordered Set A and Set B for our lunch. The foods were excellent. The portions were little small and price is about 10% more than other local restaurant. The service were really poor. The servers did not look like they were ready for lunch service (they look like they partied hard last night and not awake). There was even chopstick left on the floor from last night. My wife told me not to remind them to pick it up, but it is dangerous if someone had stepped on it and the person would have tripped. Overall experience was good. We will go back for the food, if they are more attentive with the services.

Awesome spot for lunch specials! Great deal for a lot of food! Had combo A and it was more than enough food for lunch!

Excellent menu and food. Service nice after a bit of a clumsy greeting even though we had a reservation. Smooth sailing after that.

Although the food was excellent, it was extremely noisy - so much so that you could not hear the person talking across the table. Also, we felt quite rushed with our meal - they had us in and out in under an hour for no apparent reason (there were no ppl waiting).

Food was fantastic but service was terrible as we had to ask for our drinks multiple times and waitress forgot items of our order and as well she put us dead center in empty restaurant before it got busy as we ask to be on a end table ... been here many times and this time it wasn’t enjoyable as our last few times ..

The food was great. Super upsetting they ran out of the 3 things we wanted. Uni, any Toro, wagyu. Had a mediocre birthday because of that. Sashimi was good though and black rice sushi. The seared beef nigiri wasn’t flavourful

Authentic Japanese food experience. The Hot Pot and Grilling Stone experience were phenomenal. Fresh and quality ingredients

The food is delicious here, there is no doubt about that. However the ambiance is mediocre at best. Everytime someone's gets up the chair scratch along the slate floor making so much noise. The chairs are also very uncomfortable This could easily be remedied making the vibe so much better.

Service was MUCH better this time, and much more attentive.

We have been so many times, and left disappointed. Food quality was OK, but the service was miserable. Took forever to take our drink order, and then food order, never came to check on us or to take away empty dishes. Left and went somewhere else to complete our meal.

Food was nice but service was bad.

Some of the best Sushi I have ever had.
It’s a bit on the pricey side however if you want quality it is worth it.

Very unsatisfied with the service, but good taste for sure. I probably won’t go again because of my experience last night. When I got seated, one of the seats had water spill, if I didn’t notice, my pants would get all wet. I asked the server to clean it up, but she decided to finish wiping an empty table first before helping me. So I had to stand there and wait... Then, when my friend asked for more tea, the server only helped her to fill her cup but not the rest of the table... Also, when I asked for the bill, I waited for 10mins and had to ask again. The server brought the machine after we were impatient and told her we waited for 20 mins to pay for the bill. Lastly, they used to give frozen grapes after we ate, we didn’t get any. Worst birthday dinner ever, so I would not go again. I have been to black rice several times for everyday dining (lunches, dinners etc), but last night ruined my previous impressions. Don’t go there for any special occasions! They can’t guarantee good service!

It was our first time eating at Black Rice Izakaya after all the amazing things we've heard. We brought a close couple friends of ours and were excited to eat everything. The food was lovely, we ordered the Yaki Udon and the Beef and Mushroom Rice in the Hot bowl, the main aburi platter, and about 3 other plates for the four of us. The food was very tasty... but we all rushed home post dinner with a bad stomach ache that lasted into the evening. Luckily it wasn't anything serious... but it would be odd that all 4 of us had stomach aches all around the same time.

We celebrate our birthday here but seems like nobody cares. We have mentioned it on open table and thought the staff will do something special

We went there before our show at Queen Elizabeth theatre. It is just half a block to the theatre, so super convenient.

We went early before 6 on a weekday, so the restaurant was quiet and the service was good. We ordered agedashi tofu, chicken karaage, beef with black mushroom and rice in a hot stone bowl. All are outstanding.

We also ordered a tuna toro aburi. My friend noticed the fish tastes not fresh, the server told us that is how that dish taste like. We did not know who to believe, so we returned the dish (with no charge).

Overall, we had good experience at black rice izakaya. But I might not order aburi again.

Service needs improvement.
