Black Rabbit Restaurant & Bar
The kitchen uses seasonal ingredients from Edgefield's own gardens, grown using organic methods.
Have wanted to go to Black Rabbit for years having heard so many wonderful comments from friends. Excellent time. Chad our server was great. Food was amazing.
Very nice historic location for a great deal on meals.
We have been coming to the Black Rabbit Restaurant and Bar for Thanksgiving the last 3-4 years, and unfortunately THIS year was definitely a bit of a "smack in the face" with how unfortunate our experience was.
Our waitress felt rushed, and in turn made *US* feel like we needed to rush, but not only that: she felt like she didn't want to be there. She wasn't very engaging, didn't provide small talk, and if she wasn't asking for our order, she didn't want to be there. She rarely came by the table to see how we were doing, and only asked for drink re-orders once the entire time.
Also: we received to bread and butter as part of our experience. That may be Black Rabbit's new policy, but EVERY year before now we have received starting bread and butter. (our reservation was for NOON, so there was no way they would have run out).
Lastly, the menu was a bit limited and was heavy on the seafood (odd, being that it was a Thanksgiving celebration).
Overall, we were not very happy with our experience at Black Rabbit this year, which is a shame because this was the first year we chose to bring guests with us. We told them how much we had enjoyed it in the past, and sadly our guests were less than thrilled with the mediocre service and experience we received.
Black Rabbit has always been a great place for ambiance, great dining and attentive staff. We dine there for special occasions and a occasional intimate dining experience.
The egg Norwegian was fantastic
Great service and incredible food. Our server, Catherine provided exceptional service and suggestions throughout our meal. We will be back!
The Rabbit was extremely busy for this visit, more so than any other time we've been there. Because of the crowd, wait times for drinks and food was quite long, although our wait person explained the wait time and we were with good friends so the wait was tolerable. I thought the food prep, while good was off BRR's normal game, again this could have been due to the busyness. So I'm giving them a pass this time and will go back BUT will shoot for a less busy time
I love this place for the consistent, delicious, and perfectly balanced dishes. The customers are a bit loud, but it’s nice to not feel snobbiness in the air. Also, I know it’s McMenamins tradition, but that entryway picture. 🤔
I love the updated menu! We both enjoyed our meals. I had the roasted chicken au jus, my husband had the Alaskan halibut. Delish!
We chose the Black Rabbit for the last dinner of our visit to Portland. So part of our issues are based on being new to the area and unfamiliar with the venue. After searching through a maze of parking lots in the rain and the dark, we finally found a parking spot in the outer reaches. A kind man pulled in next to us and offered to lead us to the restaurant. My husband, who has a handicap parking permit, struggling to keep up. As we approached the Black Rabbit, there in front of the porch where several (empty) handicap spots. I ran back to get the car while my husband waited inside. Then things picked up with 2 well made cocktails while we waited for our table, which became available right at the time of our reservation. Very nice server approached. When we ordered the baked goat cheese appetizer, she ran to get that part of the order in and came back for our entrée order. Then we waited. And waited. When the appetizer arrived, we were just enjoying our first taste when our entrées arrived. In spite of being taken back and held for us, the entrees were delicious when they arrived the second time. Then we ordered house made ice cream for dessert. And we waited. And waited. And finally 20 minutes later the ice cream arrived. The ice cream was wonderful, but the accompanying biscotti too hard to bite into. It's an interesting place, cozy booths, pleasant servers and good food, but it needs improvement in directions when entering the venue and timing from the kitchen.
We had a lovely dinner. I ordered the ribeye steak and it was fantastic. We also ordered the tuna and halibut-all very good. One person did order scallops and they were undercooked and were accompanied by a very heavy sauce. We returned it and ordered something else, but they didn’t remove the original charge for the scallops. I discovered this the next morning and was able to get it removed. I was also disappointed that there was no mention of the occasion we were all celebrating-I had made sure to let the staff know ahead of time, but nothing mentioned etc...overall a nice experience just wished there was a little more attention to the details.
The server interaction is the only reason we did not provide 5 stars in every category. We would have appreciated our female server to of been a bit more interactive. Instead, she was short and abrupt. Our reservation was for 5:15 p.m. and the traffic of people to be served was very light. The chef prepared some of the best dishes we have ever eaten!
Enjoyable! We weren't rushed, food was presented nicely and very flavorful. will come again!
The Black Rabbit restaurant had very delicious vegan salads and entrees with fresh seasonal organic ingredients that changed as the seasons changed. I don't know what happened, but I was so disappointed to see that all they have now is 1 vegan entree.
Menu has been updated, always great service...love this place! :)
Great place to spend time with my wife. We love it there.
The pork belly and tongue was very tough. Also the steak. The rest of the meal was great. Shrimp and dessert were outstanding.
The Black Rabbit Restaurant simply has the best food ever and service to ensure your meal is pleasant. My halibut dish was perfect in portion and preparation and my husband could not finish his steak which was tender and had the best flavor of any steak he has eaten in a long while. The salad was fresh from their gardens, however they must have been out of the lemon cucumbers as their were none in my salad. We loved everything and admired the hotel and staff for putting up with the inconvenience of noisy fans running to dry out the damage from the flood. We live this place and stop whenever we are in the Portland/Troutdale area. It’s a must stop for us and we have never been disappointed. Wish we lived closer . The menu , although small, has tastes and meals like no one else. We have been traveling and eating out every night for two weeks and really appreciated this meal.
The night we were there the Hotel had just had a water line crisis. Fortunately, it did not impact the restaurant. So, our meal was great and we were able to meet our friends. The staff was great in keeping things going.
Menu is too limited, prices too high for amount of food received
Dessert menu, too few items
Much better menu and choices at Power Station
We were looking for a good steak. They did not disappoint. Service was good and friendly. Open floor plan so noises kids could be a problem. Overall exelent experience.
This was our first experience at a McMenamins place and it did not disappoint. Food was absolutely delicious and the staff friendly and very attentive. Nice that it was a casual atmosphere but didn’t skimp on quality. Will be going back for sure!
The food was average. Wine was good. Service was ok but very abrupt and unfriendly. Ambience good because it is an historic place.
I always love the Black Rabbit Restaurant. I love McMenamin's Edgefield. Walking around with a glass of wine in my hand. Watching people walk, listening to the kids laughter, enjoying the warmth and sun. Just a lovely place to be on any day, any time of year. The Black Rabbit has a lovely menu. Lots of great choices. Our waiter was wonderful. Made some suggestions, had great answers to our questions. One of my favorite places for a date night with hubby.
Staff was great. Pre concert so handy. Food is always mediocre and overpriced.
The food was really good. But it was my husbands birthday and there was nothing the Resturant did to acknowledge this special night. I was disappointed.
Lunch was delicious- crab roll wonderful. Breakfast not so much- had a salmon gravis- the bagel they put this on was old- hard as a rock. So happy with lunch, not happy with breakfast.
We had brunch, chicken fried over cooked, rock hard. French toast was excellent.
Very good service but still hungry after $70 meal for 2. The chicken has gotten even smaller laying on a small bed garnish
Everything was delicious, although a bit salty. Waitress was patient and very helpful. Dinner was enjoyed by all.
While this was not our first visit to McMenamin's Edgefield, it was our first time eating at the Black Rabbit. We were very pleased with all aspects of the restaurant and will definitely eat there again! We had dinner (me: roasted chicken; my wife: steak) and it was super delicious. Before that, we were greeted in a very friendly and warm manner by the Host, and our server was fantastic. He was very attentive, professional, and really knew how to take care of us in the best way possible. The next morning, we ate breakfast there (we stayed the night and the only place on that campus to have breakfast is the Black Rabbit), and the Eggs Benedict, sautéed potato chunks, chicken sausage, eggs, and everything else were superb! Great service overall, and we highly recommend this restaurant.
The fries were very greasy.
Great Food and Service.
The dining room was a bit under staffed. This was evident by the poor beverage service. I had to ask twice for a coffee refill which finally came 45 minutes after our arrival which was almost too late to enjoy. We were also never offered water refills even though our glasses were empty after a long wait for our breakfast. I don’t blame our server, she was slammed but management should staff properly or at least get out on the floor and help with refills and check check in on tables. Who is in charge?
Excellent breakfast. Lovely, quaint setting.
The service was great! I ordered the bacon wrapped scallops and enjoy it! My husband ordered the grilled salmon and it turned out a bit on the dry side. Had the dessert sampler....it was okay.
This is the third time I've been to the black rabbit. I honestly would not have eaten here have there been anywhere else to have breakfast at the hotel. My past experiences or not great. My partner and I each ordered the Edgefield breakfast which is eggs potatoes meet and toast. The eggs were fine. My potatoes were undercooked. My boyfriend did not enjoy the sausage. My begin was over peppered. The toast was the best part. When you're paying $13 a piece for breakfast seems like it should be better then what you can get at Denny's for $7.
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary that evening. Service was beyond compare, and food was just as we ordered it-perfect. Great place to just hang out also.
overly greasy grilled cheese made it difficult to enjoy
Service, salads and apps were nice. Someone needs to check the chefs hand with the salt. The main dish was inedible due to the amount of salt.
