About Black Powder Tavern
Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution.
It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence.
Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. We invite you to experience the small and large plates, craft beers and revolutionary hospitality that is Black Powder Tavern.

Black Powder Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Food was really good. Selection of beer and wine very good. We had outdoor seating because we've learned through prior visits that indoor seating is so noisy that conversation is nearly impossible. There is no separation between the bar and the dining room, which probably accounts for the extremely high noise level.
The food was fine. We have had excellent service here in the past. This time the service was just ok. Our biggest complaint was the hostess. She was not only not welcoming, she was kind of miserable...its not asking a lot to say hello and goodbye and eke out a smile. It might be a while before we stop by again.
I was a little disappointed, to be honest. The menu looks great, but both the short rib tots that we got as one of our starters and the veggie burger my wife got fell flat. One of our kids' grilled cheeses was burned and I actually got an incorrect entree (though the shrimp and crab ravioli I got was my 2nd choice and was delicious, so that's not a problem to me in the end; I opted not to send back). Cocktails were well done but my beer, which arrived while I was away from the table, was not served with/in a pint glass, just the bottle (never a good look with better beer). A bit expensive as a family place, probably better value as a couple alone.
We went on a Friday evening and the room was incredibly loud, mostly from the bar area. The food choices and the ambiance are very casual. Lots of hamburgers, sandwiches, etc. I would go there with kids or for a quick dinner but not for anything special. Food was good but not outstanding in any way.
We made a reservation for a family dinner for Easter. We had 16 people. Th e restaurant and staff were very accommodating. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Food was very good with plenty of unique offerings. I would recommend this for a family gathering or just a regular night out.
This is the second time we have eaten at the Inn and we are planning to go again for Thanksgiving. Our waiter was one of the best we have had in a long time and we do make it a point to eat out numerous times each month at many different restaurants.
I have recommended Black Power to many of my friends. Keep up the good work. Two more birthday's are on the calendar and if we are home to celebrate I am sure it will be at the Black Powers.
My wife and I had dined at Black Powder Tavern previously and have always had a good experience at this restaurant. I like the atmosphere as well as the historical aspects of the tavern. Definitely this restaurant rates a two thumbs up. Their menu is creative and has offerings for everyone. While we ordered only dinner salads, BPT offers complete meals, burgers, small plates, etc. Our salads were excellentI I ordered their signature Grilled Salmon Salad, my wife the Kale Beet Salad. Dressings were yummy, house-made. Our server, George B. who was also bartending did a super job serving us in a friendly and personal, manner. We had the Toll House pie for dessert...delicious. Already looking forward to a return visit!
It was not a good night; too busy for our wait person; put the drink and food order in and had food within 10 minutes (which had it been lunchtime rush, GREAT thing - catching up with friends, not so much) never asked about refilling drink order; we were seated next to a huge group and couldn't hear each other.; the fish in the fish & chips were heavily coated in batter, icky thick, meat was good, but had pulled off coating - I've have raved about how thin and light the battered fish was, I'm hoping it was just an off night.
was in & out in less than an hour - not that much fun
We had a very good meal at The Black Powder Tavern. They had an interesting menu, very good food, and very nice servers, we will definitely go back. When I made the reservation, I had reservations because I read some very negative reviews. They were definitely not fair, nor accurate, we had an enjoyable evening with good food. It was all good.....Ann
We were sitting at a table for five right next to the speaker. It interrupted our discussion because the music was too loud for conversations to flow. Four of the items we ordered were no available because an oven was not working. We were disappointed. It was a birthday celebration and we wanted what was listed on the menu. We will go again and hope for a better result.
First time at Black Powder Tavern. Met friends for dinner on a Saturday night. Really nice time! We were seated right away. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and beer. I had the black bean burger and it was amazing! The roll was good and the cheeses on top helped make the delicious burger perfect! Everyone enjoyed their food and the beer selection! Will definitely be going back soon!
We were seated at our table, it was not set for service. Water took forever to get to the table. We ordered drinks that didn't come out until after our food was ready. Staff was very unorganized, had us organize the dirty dishes so they could clear them. Food was good though.
