About Black Powder Tavern
Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution.
It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence.
Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. We invite you to experience the small and large plates, craft beers and revolutionary hospitality that is Black Powder Tavern.

Black Powder Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Early Saturday evening event, atmosphere was noisy, wait staff was harried. Ordered chopped salad with salmon from menu with no onions and dressing on the side (nothing fancy). The first time the wrong order was brought to the entire table. The second time, the salad was still wrong. The third time the salad was still wrong but everyone else was finished with their meal so it was eaten. Management did apologize and removed the item from the bill.
Met two friends/colleagues for a mid-week lunch. I arrived early but was seated and waited for the other two ladies.
Our food was all good. We each had an entrée salad. And we really liked the Cheesy Devils on Horseback appetizer. We only wished it was a bigger portion (2 for each would've been nice and the dates were very small to begin with).
My only real complaint was that it seemed that over half the parking lot was reserved for valet! Really? On a Wednesday afternoon?
Sunday afternoon. Server was great. Not overly intrusive, but there when we needed him. Food was more than we expected for pub food. My husband is born & raised in Italy. He is very difficult to please, but worse is that we both work in the restaurant biz. We are difficult to please. Having said that, we were very pleased with Black Powder Tavern. Thank you for your hospitalitality, much appreciated. 😊
I greatly enjoy your brunch. Good food, good service, good atmosphere. I have been to brunch at your restaurant many times. One request: please bring back the thicker strawberry topping that used to be available for the placing on top of waffles! The more recent version being used is much too watery for my taste. But, overall, I like your restaurant very much.
We were REALLY disappointed. We chose Black Tavern because we thought that their menu included vegan or at least vegetarian options. We reserved a table via OpenTable. When we arrived, we found out that there was only a buffet and that the menu wouldn't be used. We had not received any notice of this. As vegans, we could basically only eat lettuce. And then we got the bill for about $40 each after tax and tip. And the service was terrible. I think the managers must have their heads stuck underground. On the plus side, the place itself was pretty neat-looking and had interesting decorations.
Second visit in less than a year. There still seems to be issues with service. We waited around 10 minutes for a waitress to come to our table. We had a reservation as well. The waitress was good, but possibly overloaded. Food was just ok, nothing spectacular.
My husband and I had a very nice dinner here on Saturday night. I had the Lafayette Onion Soup. Highly recommend. My husband had a very large caesar salad. I then had the teriyaki salmon over a salad and my husband had the grilled salmon. Both were delicious. The service was good and it was an enjoyable night.
Black Powder was good, but made no accommodation for my Open Table request for a special table. Food was good, while the server was energetic and enthusiastic. The "cheesy devils on horseback" are a must try, to share. The pork chop was surprisingly moist and good, if a little chewy. We come from the NYC-area, so food prices were good, by comparison. We would definitely return. But will definitely ask for a booth.
Went for brunch. Breakfast brunch choices were very good. Lunch choices, not so much. Chicken Marsala was stringy and overly salty. Pork roast was nicely seasoned, but exceptionally dry. Shrimp and beef were excellent. A nice place with excellent service, but they need to up their game on the quality of some of the food, especially given the price.
The service we received here was terrible. They were busier due to graduation, but no one else seemed to be having an issue with service. We waited at least 30 minutes for drinks from the time we were seated. A server did not even greet us until 20 minutes after we sat down. The waitress forgot to bring our appetizer out. Our food arrived after we'd been there at least an hour. Many of us ordered burgers and they were very undercooked. The waitress was unapologetic. The hostess was very friendly and clearly felt bad about the poor service we received. She tried numerous times to have the manager come talk to us, but she never did. A member of our party eventually went to find the manager and she did comp our bill. Overall the food was not great and the service was terrible.
We come here at least one a month, and this will probably be the last time. The food is usually delicious, and they are typically staffed enough to handle dinner service. This time, not so much.
I wanted to take my parents out for a nice dinner, and it turned into a joke. The server was extremely busy. It seemed like the server was working outside and inside, and had more table than they could handle.
We sat at 6:45, and didn't receive drinks (just soda and water) until about 7:00. We ordered the soft pretzel and Irish Nachos for apps. We didn't receive the apps until about 7:30. When the apps came out, it seemed like the Irish Nachos sat under the heat lamp too long. The cheese was dry, and looked like it completely evaporated off the chips somehow. The pretzels were good.
The meal finally came out around 8:00. The chicken pot pie was delicious as usual, except the one order had small sharp chicken bones. I was going to take a picture. I went and told the manager, and instead of him coming over to the table to check it out, he told me that it's how they make the pot pie. They boil a whole chicken. I was stunned by his response. I used to be a chef and food and beverage manager. When you make chicken stock, and homemade chicken pot pie, there is a way to boil and debone a chicken without having sharp bones in your final product. It seems like a terrible excuse that could ultimately lead to a choking hazard. Perhaps they should leave a disclaimer next to the pot pie stating that it could cause choking due to small chicken bones.
With many other restaurants In the area that care about their diners, I think that will be my last visit. It's a shame, because their food is usually delicious, and there is so much history in the building. Unfortunately, the service has really gone down hill. It's time for them to regroup and learn how to treat diners.
I've been here several times but was very disappointed this time. We took my mom out for a Mother's Day dinner. We received one entree (but only one) at the same time as the salads were served. We asked for it to please be held until we had a chance to enjoy our salads. Five minutes later all the entrees were brought to us. We asked again, and they came back out yet again while we were still eating our salads. It was obvious that a delicate seafood dish just sat under the warmer and waited for us. It was cold by the time we were ready to eat it. To top it all off, my daughter did not receive her dinner until 5-10 minutes after everyone was completely done their meal even though we asked for it three times. It seemed as if the restaurant was simply trying to rush us out of there so they could seat someone else. Not how you want to be treated on a $250 meal when celebrating a special occasion.
Food was really good. Selection of beer and wine very good. We had outdoor seating because we've learned through prior visits that indoor seating is so noisy that conversation is nearly impossible. There is no separation between the bar and the dining room, which probably accounts for the extremely high noise level.
The food was fine. We have had excellent service here in the past. This time the service was just ok. Our biggest complaint was the hostess. She was not only not welcoming, she was kind of miserable...its not asking a lot to say hello and goodbye and eke out a smile. It might be a while before we stop by again.
