Black Powder Tavern
It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence.
Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. We invite you to experience the small and large plates, craft beers and revolutionary hospitality that is Black Powder Tavern.
Experience and food was wonderful as always. Highly recommend.
Nice space and atmosphere. Very good service but really average food.
Went this past Sunday for brunch. The brunch buffet was just okay. Not a big selection. The buffet items were picked through and the buffet was sloppy (suggest the restaurant cut up the dessert pies prior to placing them out). With that being said, it is a good value for the money. Our waiter was great. Very attentive and pleasant.
It was a wonderful champagne brunch for my daughter's 21 St birthday. Quick service and delicious food.!
Great food!!! Clean and very well decorated for the history! Brunch was everything from made to order omlet, steak, pork, shrimp, lunch meats, eggs Benedict!! My hubby and brother made at least 5 trips each, and different selections each time!!! Would go back
We felt rushed which was the negative of the night.
Apps and drinks were good, main course was just ok. Loud inside but the atmosphere itself was unique.
I’ve been to this establishment many times but this time we were seated in the back room. The noise level was off the rails. There were a bunch of preteens celebrating a bday but everyone seems loud. Perhaps the acoustics but I’ll refrain from sitting there again. Otherwise it was very good.
Great place-about 2-3 years ago I stopped by to see what the place was like. The fist thought was that the place had to much noise. Then about six months ago I went with a friend. The noise level had dropped some. The place is a great place to eat but I did not come to hear loud music. The last two times, just lately, we asked the waiter to lower the music. The purpose for coming there was NOT to hear music. A little music that you can barely hear is OK. Remember, lower the noise meaning lower music noise.
Nice restaurant, food is good not excellent. The buffet on Sunday needed more of a variety for the price.
It was my first time for brunch, dinner two times prior that was good. The setting is nice and not too loud, sorta cozy. I would go back for dinner but not brunch.
I have been to Black Tavern before and enjoyed it. We went to brunch for my birthday and used Open Table to reserve our table and view the menu. Open Table listed the brunch as being 21.95pp++ but when we got there, the price was 24pp++. I told the waiter about the difference, but the bill came, and the charge was $24. No one wanted to make an issue on my birthday. The manager even commented later and blamed it on Open Table.
Some of the food items in the buffet were overcooked (eggs benedict - was a hard-boiled egg), the carved pork was not warm, and the handcrafted omelet was not cooked long enough for the cheese to melt.
Upon exiting the mat by the door had been moved and I slipped and fell, (snow and ice melt) it took a good 10/15 minutes for the manager to arrive with the incident report. The whole thing was extremely embarrassing.
The only good thing was the cheese blintzes, the company, singing happy birthday and the waiter.
I always love coming here for Brunch. Come hungry as the buffet is really big! Good selections. Save room for dessert!
First time there. Was a busy night but service was great, food was great and had a very enjoyable evening
Great food, great service....parking is a challenge - even with a reservation, no guarantee there will be a place to park.
Always great here - love the food, atmosphere and staff!
I've always had good food here.
We had a very enjoyable meal at Black Powder! The food was great as was the service. Our waiter who told us he was a welder during the day, was pleasant, quick, and attentive, but not overly intrusive. All in all a great experience!
Great, friendly service. I had the mussels, which were plentiful, spicy, and delicious. I'll be back.
Wait staff little slim or spread to cover area far apart. Several dishes low, refilling dish very slow. Omlette position not named at all times.
We have been eating at Black Powder for the last 8+ years. For the last year it seems to be lacking. We made a reservation tonight and still had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. My husband & son stood at the bar for 10 minutes to get drinks while we were waiting & were never served. I had the chicken pot pie. The potatoes in the pie were not cooked completely. There was way too much onion. We shared the hummus which was chunky & very watery as well as the calamari which was rather chewy. Our waitress came to our table each time & interrupted our conversation. The only enjoyable part of the evening was the company of my family.
Great food, but definitely recommend setting a reservation. They have onsite, free valet parking, but don’t forget a few dollars for tip.
Had to wait for 20 minutes past reservation time and service was slow. Food was good.
I ordered the jambalaya and my husband ordered the Cajun Mac & cheese. My jambalaya rice was very undercooked and the whole dish was almost soupy..my husbands Mac & cheese was okay. The server wasn’t very attentive, only visited our table about 3-4 times the whole time we were there. Not a very impressive date night dinner for us...
Was delicious!!! Seriously impressed. Went with two other individuals. The bread and butter was so yummy and great way to start. We each had an alcoholic beverage. Meals were chicken pot pie, traditional Ruben, and steak friets. They all were wonderful. Is 20 minutes away for us but well worth the drive.
One of my favorite places. We got our reservations late so ate in the back dining room for a change but loved it!
The Black Powder Tavern was everything I expected and hoped for. I and my family traveled 1.5 hours to dine there for a special "birthday" occasion. Loved the Early American décor. Ambiance was fantastic, the food was wonderful: prepared well with a nice varied selection. We had a small group of 5 celebrating 2 birthdays and sat a bit and was never rushed. There food was well prepared and the portions were good, same with the drinks. NO 1/4 glass of wine! And.. to our delight, the birthday gal and guy received a free dessert - from the menu!!! Not the small cheesy "birthday pudding" you get at other restaurants. 5 stars all the way around.
Great Brunch!!! Everyone enjoyed the food and mimosas. Brunch price includes one Bloody Mary or mimosa and then refills are $2.50! Kevin our server was outstanding!❤️
Brunch Food selection was excellent. Service was fine. The restaurant was full and noisy. All else fine.
Had a 7:15 reservation and weren't seated until 7:35 or so. And we weren't alone--same for several other parties. We've had enjoyable lunches at BPT but this was our first dinner. The food was fine as usual, and our server, Jessica, was excellent. But why take reservations when there's no way to seat the patrons? Mystifying.
The food and drinks are always dependably good. The servers work hard taking care of sell-out crowds, but they do so with a smiles and pleasantness.
Food was OK. Nothing special. Server was good. Place was packed for an 11:45 lunch reservation. Food wait time not particularly quick but acceptable. Menus were kind of dingy and dog-eared. Did not make a great first impression. OK overall. But pretty ordinary.
Food overpriced, recommended sandwiches was “weird” , service slow, onion soup only warm hardly any onions or cheese. Never going back. Not impressed at all
Alex was our waiter and once again he did a great job.
Wonderful service, ambiance and food. $24 is a tad higher we remember last visit.for those that don’t enjoy complimentary cocktails..it feels a bit pricey. Overall, enjoyed our brunch. Thank you.
Have us a table too small for to accommodate the baby we had with us. Uncomfortable for the entire meal. Much unlike a prior visit when we were given an appropriate table.
Terrible food, lackluster service. Food for the entire table was a disaster. Our orders were wrong and once we received our plates, everything was way too salty. Garbage bagged fries (get with the times and cut your own fries). Wait staff got drunk orders wrong 3 times. Disaster of a night. For what you pay, as a customer you deserve better.
Good! Meal. Nice that they have a kids menu!!
Fish & chips was over cooked so the fish was rough. Everything else was good!
Always a pleasurable experience. Excellent food, drinks and ambience. Service is top notch!
I have eaten here twice. Last month the service and food were very good.
This time my salmon was dry and the waitress was abrupt and snippy
